Android :: Attach Text File Stored Locally In Application Directory?
Jul 9, 2010
I have an Android app that saves a text file directly onto the phone, in the app's install directory. I need to allow the user to create a new email, attaching this saved text file. When I start the intent to send the email, everything shows up in Gmail correctly, but the attachment does not get sent. All of my searches on stack overflow seem to only deal with attaching an image file from the SD card. Below is the code that I used. Please let me know if I have done something incorrectly.
File myFile = new File(getFilesDir() + "/" + "someFile.txt");
FileOutputStream stream = null;
if( file != null )
steam = openFileOutput("someFile.txt", Context.MODE_WORLD_READABLE);
stream.write(some_data);
Uri uri = Uri.fromFile(myFile);
Intent sendIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_SEND);
sendIntent.setType("text/plain");
sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_SUBJECT, subject);
sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_TEXT, email_text);
sendIntent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_STREAM, uri);
file.close();
startActivity(Intent.createChooser(sendIntent, "Email:"));
I've also tried sendIntent.setType("application/octet-stream"); but that didn't make a difference. I'm at a loss for why the file doesn't attach and get sent.

The only thing that seems to attach in a text message are pics and music files. I am probably making it way too difficult, i tend to do that .

I have a locally stored webpage (html) under res/raw folder.There is an image that is referenced in this html page (test.gif) which is stored under res/drawables.When I use a webview to display this page, it does not display the image. How can I correctly reference the path to the test.gif image?I tried using a text view with Html.fromHtml() but that does not parse several html tags.

Is there any app that instead of sending the voicemail to the network it records it on to the phone?
Voicemail for me is not included in my monthly minutes, so I can end up with quite a large percentage of my phone bill being voicemail.
I'm running RCMixS on my HTC Desire

I've noticed that despite having only four or five playlists on Google Music (desktop) my phone shows a bunch - mostly ones from albums I've downloaded. They don't show up in the browser version on my desktop so it looks like the only way to get rid of them is to manually delete every single one via the phone app.
Also, I've noticed that when I switch the settings to "on device only" my playlists created on the web page no longer show up, despite me having the majority of the songs on my microSD. I remember I used to be able to switch to "on device only" and the cloud playlist would scale down to only what I had on local storage. Was so....logical! Is there any way I can still do this? My microSD music is pretty much pointless since I don't have access to the playlists when I'm using "on device only".

Sometimes in LogCat I'll see Wrote stack trace to '/data/anr/traces.txt'
But when using the DDMS perspective, "File Explorer" View, I can't see anything in the "data" directory, I'm assuming because permission denied. Is there a way (short of rooting my ion device) to read what's in that text file?
Is there perhaps an android app for developers that will show the contents of the file? It would seem there would have to be some way of reading the file without rooting the device, otherwise why does the o.s. write it out? How can I read this file?

I have written a test case to implement a conference contact management system with Content Provider and SQLite. The launch activity is a Listactivity and the customized provider is extended from ContentProvider, u know, actually the sample is so similar to the Notepad Sample in the official SDK packages. However, i can't find the created .db file in the /data/data/myapp/ except the /lib directory. Why?

By default, files saved to the internal storage are private to your application and other applications cannot access them (nor can the user).I am able to see the file "/data/data/package_name/files/ in file explore in DDMS, but when i attached the above file URI using imageUri in email , then i saw that attached file is of 0kb.i have used the default email APIs of Android.Can anyone suggest me ,how to attach a file in email that is private to the application?although i am successful able to save the file in SD card and attaching the file from SD card , this is working fine.But if SD card is not available and saving the file to the internal storage , then how can i attach them in email.

My application stores data locally in the native SQLite db, and I want to allow users to export this data by emailing themself a .csv file. In order to do this I'm generating the .csv from the database and writing it to the SD card, then attaching it to an email:String Builder csv = generateFile();writeFile(csv.toString(),"file.csv");Intent email = new Intent(android.content.Intent.ACTION_SEND);email.setType ("application /octet -stream"); email.putExtra(android.content.Intent. EXTRA_ STREAM, Uri.parse ("file://sdcard/file.csv")); Which all works great. What I'm wondering, though, is if it is possible to skip the step of writing to SD first, and directly attach the data.

I am trying to launch an Intent to send an email. All of that works, but when I try to actually send the email a couple 'weird' things happen.So if I launch using the Gmail menu context It shows the attachment, lets me type who the email is to, and edit the body & subject. No big deal. I hit send, and it sends. The only thing is the attachment does NOT get sent.I figured, why not try it w/ the Email menu context (for my backup email account on my phone). It shows the attachment, but no text at all in the body or subject. When I send it, the attachment sends correctly. That would lead me to believe something is quite wrong. Do I need a new permission in the Manifest launch an intent to send email w/ attachment? What am I doing wrong?

I can choose attach and then picture to pick one from my phone and it works great, but when I try to attach then choose camera, it just sends one that I sent 3 months ago and I can not change it.

I am new to Android and creating my first application.I want to create a file in the current directory. Basically I have a file bundled with aplication package as raw resource. I want to make a copy of this file in the current file. The reason to create copy in current directory is that I want my file reading code in native java, portable code.So my query is how can I create a file on current directory? The location current directory is important here as I do not want to make use of device specific hardcoded path or any Android API while reading the file. This is so I want my file reading code portable.
