How Does App Interact With External Electronic Device
Apr 30, 2013
If I wanted to create an app that manipulates, reads the data of, or controls an external electronic device, what coding or technologies are involved in this? some apps control an toy RC plane in the room.

I am now beginning an app which will use the compass and tilt sensors to determine a persons heading and line of sight. Can I assume the sensors on devices such as the G1 are fairly accurate or can I expect to run into problems such as the compass being 5-10 degress off etc?

Anyone has experience with controlling an external device from an Android phone via the ISB interface ? I am thinking about using an external camera connected to the Android via the USB port; that would allow me to take pictures with higher resolution or with different optical lenses, like a FishEye.

I'm looking for some input on how to go about a problem I have. We have a device that has binary data that it needs to send out (they are mainly just symbols, but in a custom binary format) over ethernet. I need to intercept this data on the phone and display the symbols over google maps. I'm just wondering the best way to go about this, I have a few ideas but am not sure if they are possible or feasable: 1. Is it possible for the phone to connect directly to the device if the device had some sort of server running on it, then poll for new data? If so, what is the protocol needed to be able to direct connect like that? 2. Perhaps modify the device software to send data to the phone(s) in SMS data message format? Im not sure if it is possible for software to "spoof" an SMS to a phone when it is not a phone itself? 3. Have the device software upload all its binary data to a ftp/http server that is sitting out there somewhere, have the phone(s) connect to that server and poll for new data periodically? I'm brand new to android development, basically all I want to do is grab this binary data from the device on my phone and parse/display it over google maps. How do any of those ideas sound, or is there a much easier way I am overlooking?

I was planning to make my phone (a rooted SGSII Skyrocket on AT&T running GB) accessible over SSH so I could remote-control it in the event thieves (or my parents) took it. how would I know what my phone's external IP is? Any app that can read the phone's external IP and respond with it via, say, text message?

When making an image I accidentally had Clockworkmod image be saved to the device itself instead of being saved to the external SD card.
I am able to browse to it using Root Explorer and select to Copy it, but how do I PASTE it onto the external SD card when Root Explorer only accesses the device directory and not the external SD card?
Quick 2nd question: I know on some previous devices such as the Galaxy S 4G you were *not* supposed to run Clockworkmod after booting in and from the Apps Drawer, instead you were only supposed to run directly from the startup screen before booting in. Is it OK to actually start the Clockwork Backup/Restore process from the Apps Drawer of the Galaxy S4 and let it reboot and do its thing or is it only supposed to be run BEFORE booting in?

Today, the focus of a cell phone's capabilities is drifting away from plain making a phone call.
And somehow, this shows in the API's too. Therefor I'm wondering: if I want to write an app that e.g. pitches up, records, scrambles... an incoming call - you know, the voice on the other side -, what aspect of the API should I use?
I looked into Android, into Windows Phone, iPhone... (briefly), but had no luck. Is this just unintended usage?

My application needs to perform some activities in background (like interacting with the network and check the location and some other stuff), having or not the main activity visible. Which is the best way to achieve this? Should I write a service for each kind of job? Or just one service that performs everything? I am aware that I will need to launch threads / asynctasks in any case because the service runs on the same thread of the UI, but maybe having several services is a more clear and readable structure.

I am creating an app which allows for many different Activities to be started from a TabActivity(up to ~25). Most of the activities require data from the sqlite database, so when onCreate is run, an AsyncTask creates an SQLiteOpenHelper object(which will open a readable/writable database), runs a query, data is retrieved, and everything is then closed.
I was just testing messing around to see if i could break something, so i added every Activityto the TabActivity's TabHost. I then started mashing each tab as quickly as possible.
I noticed that very quickly i began to see in the LogCat: Caused by: android.database.sqlite.SQLiteException: database is locked: BEGIN EXCLUSIVE; and the app proceeded to die.
Typically there will only be about 4-6 tabs(i can just limit the user anyway) for the TabHost. I haven't been able to break anything with a small amount of tabs to mash, but i am still worried that maybe i am accessing the database in a poor way.
How can i prevent my SQLiteDatabase objects to cause a lock?
If i create a ContentProvider will that eliminate the possibility of database locking?
Do you have any suggestions for changes I could make for accessing data from an SQLiteDatabase?
I ended up taking the approach of using the Application class and storing 1 SQLiteOpenHelper and trying my best to keep it synchronized. This seems to be working great - i put all my 25 activities in the TabHost and mashed away on them with no errors.
I am calling ((SQLiteDbApplication)getApplication()).setDbHelper(new DBHelper(this, Constants.DB_NAME, null, Constants.DB_VERSION_CODE)); method(shown below) in every onCreate() in my activities
Any further suggestions to this approach or to the changes i made using this Application class?
CODE:...................

I'll come up with any excuse to get a chance to write my first Android application. I've never done much with it except for a couple of tutorials.
I've got a Windows application that controls a device, and the computer isn't necessarily right next to it. I think it would be great to be able to use my Droid to issue the device commands, but I'm not sure where exactly to start. I don't have a problem writing the GUI code or Java required to send commands to the PC, but it's the wireless connection to the PC that I don't know how to approach.
Bluetooth seems like a good choice. I have a USB-Bluetooth adapter, but no Bluetooth API on Windows. Can anyone suggest one? From reading other questions here on SO, it sounds like the 2.0 SDK has some sort of Bluetooth API, so that's good.
Another option is to use 802.11, and then write a web page / service that would allow the phone to issue commands to the device.

Can someone explain a couple of very simple concepts to me - I'm interested in mobile devices running android and how they are identified over networks. Some scenarios: Device is connected over WiFi - presumably the device has a standard IP address as with any host and can communicate with any other android host over TCP/IP (assuming it knows the participating device's IP? device is connected over bluetooth - how are devices identified in this case? device is connected over mobile operator's network - this is the one I'm interested in and confused by - is there anyway for two or more devices to discover each other and communicate via the mobile operator's network? How does a device communicate with a backend server in this scenario? In other words, how do apps and devices communicate when not connected to a WiFi network?

I have created my database using sqliteman browser b/c I have to insert a bulk data before the app starts. I have four tables in my db and call each in different activities and created all on the sqliteman. after the data is inserted I pull back the db onto the data folder of the emulator. it works perfect on the emulator but failed on the device. when I try to pull my db on the real device, it shows access denied problem

How do I map the device Y axis to the screen Y axis?I can't figure this out.I'm the developer of Tricorder, and I'm trying to make it so that the accelerometer and magnetometer indicators I draw always point in the right direction. On the G1 phone with the slider closed, all is well. But when I open the slider, I end up showing that gravity is pulling me to the left (if the phone is held with the display vertical). So, I know that the device, and hence sensor, Y axis is always in the direction of the earpiece; and the screen Y axis changes when I open the slider. And I know that I can use remapCoordinateSystem() to change the device axes to match the screen axes. But where do I find out what the device's orientation is?In other words, how do I compute the correct values for the X and Y parameters to remapCoordinateSystem()?
Configuration.orientation seems quite useless.Suppose it is set to LANDSCAPE.What does this mean?Does it mean a device which is "naturally" portrait (i.e. the sensor Y axis points to the narrow end), and which has been turned into landscape mode?If so, which way was it turned?Or does it mean a device which is naturally landscape? In other words, LANDSCAPE could mean that the screen axis is off from the sensor axis by +90, 0, OR -90 degrees. Not much help.So how do I do this?Obviously I want my app to work on all devices, not just the G1 phone.

I have a standalone GPS enabled data recorder in my car that can function as either a USB host or device. (Its a class 0x00h USB device). I currently connect to it via a WM 6.5 app running on my Palm Treo 750. I would like to port my WM 6.5 app to an Android phone. (I don't have a specific Android phone in mind, I would like it to be as generic as possible).Replicating the GUI is not that difficult, but I am having trouble getting started on the USB communication. I'd appreciate it if someone could point me towards an example, or the appropriate tutorial.

Is there an app on either device that allows this? I know tsk skipping can be done by some Bluetooth headphones so I'm hoping there's a way to make iOS accept command from my Nexus

I'm using the android plugin for eclipse, and when I try to run my program using a real device through the android device chooser, my phone is not listed as a device. I have updated eclipse and all of the android packages, but it still isn't showing up. My phone is running 1.6, which is also the target version listed in the eclipse project. Also, the reason I decided to try testing on a real device is because the emulator doesn't seem to be working right anymore when I run my project. The emulator launches, but the program never does. Any ideas?(using windows 7/t-mobile mytouch 3g)
