HTC Incredible :: Push Gmail In Mail Application
Apr 27, 2010
how to set up Gmail through an exchange server so that you can get push email in the HTC Mail app. I obviously can't be 100% sure this works, but the folks over at XDA seem to think this is the solution for the Desire. The instructions are for a Windows Mobile Device, but all of the information you need to fill in inside the HTC Mail app should be available at the link. Hope this solves some push email problems on Thursday (or Wednesday for some of you lucky ones)! Setting Up Your Windows Mobile Phone for Google Sync: Google Sync

I cannot add my gmail in my HTC mail application, but my gmail apps is already added. It always says authentication failed, even though I checked the imap setting as imap.gmail.com, ssl, 993.

I'm a iPhone user switching over to the Incredible. Does the software allow instant push email notification with yahoo mail? I know it does for Gmail. I have Yahoo Plus ~ so that may help. Also, within the Mail application how many accounts can you have?

I've had my Incredible for almost a week now and I still havent brought myself to set up my Gmail to POP my work and Hotmail accounts. I just don't care for the Gmail system or client for Android OS.
I DO have a Gmail account (pretty much forced into it) but my main accounts are Hotmail and my own custom domain (non-exchange).
Yes, i'm coming from a Blackberry and have been spoiled with the best Push technology out there. No, i will not go back to Blackberry, so please spare the suggestions.
What i am wondering is if there is any 3rd party app out there that will Pop your email acct(s) and push the mail to your phone to either the stock HTC Mail app or it's own 3rd party client.
I've seen K-9 - but not sure if this is what i'm looking for.
I've seen Touchdown - but this appears to be only for Exchange.
Can either of these applications provide Push Email to Android or are there any others out there? If not, does anyone know of any on the horizon?

Gmail.is supposed to be pushed to the Incredible correct? I am using the HTC mail widget for my pop work account and the gmail icon for gmail. But email seems much slower to reach the gmail account. Also when I send emails out the.gmail takes considerably longer.

I haven't seen an follow up to this thread about using ActiveSync to get Gmail push to the HTC Mail app.
Just to share my experience, I setup ActiveSync for Gmail using the instructions posted in that thread, then setting the frequency to "as items arrive". I now get my Gmail litterally within 5-10 seconds of actually receiving it. In fact, I just tested it out by sending myself an email on my computer, and my phone beeped within 5 seconds.
Looking at my phone without any extra processes running, it doesn't seem to be "scanning" or trying to pull email every so often. Maybe I'm wrong, but this seems like a legit real time Gmail "push" to my phone. I'll have more info on battery life over the weekend, but for now this works great.

Been loving my DI but have noticed that when I turn wifi on, gmail is not being pushed to my phone. Then when I turn wifi off, it still doesn't push. I have to turn the phone on and off to get it to resume pushing...Seems like the WIFI and 3G don't like to play nice...

I cannot find a way to change the push setting for the Gmail app that came with the phone.
I setup a Yahoo account and was able to adjust hourly, 2 hour, manual, etc..
For the Gmail, I cannot find a setting that allows to adjust this?

I just got my incredible today, have it setup with my gmail. Something I noticed is my emails take anywhere from 1-5+ minutes to pop up on my phone. This is my first android so I don't know if something is wrong. I have sync enabled, not sure what else it could be.

I have been reading up on the concept of push email, and how it's supposed to be a huge battery saver (since in theory, the phone would only receive a notification of an e-mail, and not the actual e-mail itself). I have also been reading up on how the "Gmail" app's version of Push email is not the same as other Push e-mail software, in that it requires the phone to "Sync" whenever an e-mail hits the Gmail server. As a result, whenever I would try to turn Auto Sync off (supposedly to save battery), I would no longer be able to get my e-mail notifications in real time.
With this in mind, I attempted to find another application that would enable me to use Push email for my Gmail account, without having to "Sync" with Gmail's server. After messing around for a bit, I found that I could manually input my Gmail account info (Incoming Server, Outgoing Server, Username, Pass, Etc.) into the stock "Email" app that comes with the X. Once this was done, I was able to enable "Data Push" in the "Email" app's Settings menu (as well turning off any Polling intervals). By doing this, I was able to receive new Gmail notifications through the "E-mail" app, even when Auto Sync had been turned off. As a bonus, I received them around 15 seconds faster than I did with the "Gmail" app's version of Push.....

Just thinking, should the Push Gmail use less battery power than "Pull" such as Yahoo Mail. It would seem that the pull process is having to go look every 15 min and the Push process is merely sending it as it arrives.

I have the gmail app setup on my HTC desire HD and it works perfectly, however when I open the HTC mail app and try and add gmail to that it doesn't work giving me a password error (even though I am sure it is right) I want to use the htc mail app as it will allow me to have all my email accounts in the same mail box. I have tested it with a hotmail account and it works fine, is gmail supported?

How can I link my Yahoo mail to show in my Gmail on my phone? On my computer, I can see they are linked.I have my Yahoo account listed in Gmail on my laptop when I look at it.I can see all the Yahoo messages imported in my Gmail on my laptop.I also have my local cable provider email (Cox) linked to my Gmail which also shows on my laptop and it imports on both my laptop AND my Inc.I have a seperate Yahoo Icon on my phone and I can get my Yahoo emails on that just fine but I want to have all my emails linked and dumped into my Gmail so I don't have to go into different icons to get my mail.I heard you can do this, even called Verizon and he assured me you could, then wasn't sure, then said he didn't know but to get in touch with Google for this.

I'm using only the stock Gmail client that comes on the phone. I have 2 emails running thru there under "accounts". My issue is that I have other people who access the accounts as well (from desktop computers), and I need to be notified when they send emails. So what I can't find is how to get notifications of sent mails from my own accounts.I had this on my blackberry curve, where I would be notified of that.

I get my DINC tomorrow. YAY! Anyway, I am trying to figure out a few things before I get started with the setup.
I know that I can use the gmail app with my gmail account. I am already going to sync the calendar and contacts.
If I choose to use the HTC Mail app for my gmail (setup as exchange), do I need to set gmail (when logged in on the web interface) as IMAP? I know to use the m.google.com as the exchange server.

Does anyone know if there's a way/app to set a notification for each e-mail (gmail)?
I'd really like to hear my notification sound, once, for each e-mail. Currently, I get a notification for the first e-mail, then no notification for subsequent e-mails until I check/clear the notification.
I'd also like to see each e-mail in the notification area (versus grouping all new e-mails in one notification), if possible, with a preview or something (similar to how my blackberry handled it). But I'd be content with just a sound.

I use gmail for my personal email and I have this email account sent up with the Gmail program on this phone. My business email account is sent up through the regular email program on my phone. This way I can differentiate personal from business email on my home page. On thing I noticed is that I can't send mail to group contacts with Gmail program, but it seems to work okay with the regular email program. Is there a way to use group contacts with the Gmail program?

I decided I much prefer HTC Mail's interface. For now, I'm going to stick with it. I was just wondering if turning off Gmail auto-sync will affect my use of HTC Mail (which as of now seems to get my emails right away).

When I first setup my Incredible, I signed on to Gmail. Whenever I receive an e-mail, I get two, one Gmail and one HTC. I dragged the HTC mail widget to the recycle bin. Than I went to manage applications and forced stop the HTC mail. This works until I power off the phone. Each time I boot it back up, I need to go to applications and choose forced stop. It is a small pain but still a pain. One is this happening to anyone else and second does anyone have a solution?

This is my first post on the androidforums. I usually just read what other people wrote, but I can't seem to find a related post for my current problem.I date someone overseas in S. Korea, and since there's no way to send text msgs in Korean from here, I talk to her using activesync with a gmail account. She can check emails on her phone from Korea, and my phone sends me notification everytime I get an email from her. Basically it's same as texting except it allows me to type in Korean and doesn't cost a dime. For the reasons mentioned above, saving battery life isn't much of an option for me. I need to have activesync or gmail push running instantly. I tried using "check email every 5 minutes", but just imagine having to stay idle for 5 minutes everytime you text with your friends.
As of today, gmail push on android seems to work with 5 - 30 minutes delay (or manual refresh). However, Exchange Activesync will not even allow me to sync gmail (Different errors every time even though I'm putting the same information; gmail address,m.google.com as server address, username & password). I thought activesync just allows me to use "gmail push" on HTC mail app, so I don't quite understand why gmail app works (despite the lag), but activesync won't even let me sync my mail. Activesync last worked on 06/17/2010.Also, gmail push works with no lag when I'm on wifi. Is this normal?I'm starting to think there's a problem with the Sprint network or my phone. Gmail push also works instantly if my 3G bar is white. If it's greyed out, no emails come until the 3G bar turns white. Now I have to turn on AIM or MSN messenger to keep the data flowing and manually keep the 3G bar white. Then gmail push comes instantly. It's pretty ridiculous because the battery then lasts about 2-4 hours.

i'm trying to add a 2nd gmail account through the gmail app. it goes through the entire process, goes to the sync page and allows me to select what i wish to sync up then gives me a confirmation that the account has been added but when i go to the gmail app and check accounts it still only lists the 1 original account. i've tried powering the phone off and restarting - also added the account via HTC email app and deleted the 2nd account via HTC email app just in case it was conflicting there

I am using the HTC mail app, to get emails from a Gmail account, which gets messages from a POP3 account. In Gmail online, I can send all messages as being sent from the Pop3 account. I cannot figure out how to do this with the HTC mail account, which makes it pretty useless. Anyone else using HTC mail and receiving and sending from different accounts? I've tried changing the outgoing server stuff, but I keep getting failed message sent errors.
