HTC Incredible :: Low On Disk Space
Oct 11, 2010
Well, im low on disk space again! The icon keeps coming up every day or every other day! Each time it comes up, I clear data on certain apps, and I uninstall some apps from my phone! I've removed Twitter, Reuters News and Jewels in the last week.. Icon leaves but comes back few days later! And I have a lot of space on my phone by the way!

When i go to "Manage Applications" and go to "All" it shows "Dialer Storage" taking up 56.21MB. That seems WAY too high for any app. If I clear the cache for that does it just wipe the history of my phone dialer, or what exactly is that, and what will clearing the cache do?

I have now a "low disk space" notification received regarding the phone memory.it was under 19 mb K deleted a few apps.. now I have 23 mb free and the note is gone. How can you make the default save place to be the SD card and not the phone memory? (I've done that for the cache from Dolphin browser to be saved on SD)I ve read the post regarding root to make the apps to run from SD for the moment I will not root my phone waiting for the 2.0.1 update.any other solutions? I have a SD card memory of 5.55 GB free.I want to use this space and not the phone's.what program dou you use to see the apps on the phone and the space that is occupied by those? I use Astro/phone and the MOTOROLA MEDIA LINK/PC.

I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this? Admins feel free to move this thread where it should be. HTC Hero with 8gigs of memory installed. 2.1 OS.Like the title says: I am getting an error saying Low on disk space, but I have 6gigs free out of an 8gig MicroSd card. What gives? I suspect all my apps must be installing to the internal memory? Which is low with only 20megs left.I am almost sure that is what's happening. Is this by design? If so, is there a way I can install all my apps to the microsd card? I also have Astro File Manager installed and it is managing my systemapps cache and has placed the dir on: tmp/.astro/ So it's not a cache issue. Any ideas?

A friend of mine has the xt311 motorola fire. It keeps bugging her for low disk space (the internal memory is almost full indeed, and all apps that can be moved to SD have been moved).
After some research, I read that some logs could munch too much space and that by entering the mmi code * # 9 9 0 0 # you get to move the logs to the SD. Unfortunately, the code doesn't work and returns the error "connection problem or invalid mmi code".
The other solution should have to be rooting the phone and partitioning the SD then expanding the internal memory to it with link2sd. But I read about a few problems people are running into with this method. So I would like to know if there's another way to resolve this troubling limitation of the xt311.

Anyone figure out a way to move the app installations to your SD card on an HTC Desire with Eclaire (2.1) installed? I'm restlessly waiting for 2.2 to be released by Telus in Canada but don't know when that's gonna be (hopefully sometime this month). As of now, I'm running out of space to install any new apps (especially big ones like, say, ANGRY BIRDS?!). I tried out the trial version and fell in love...and now if I want this app, I have to get rid of a bunch of my useful apps.
So ultimately, my question is (and I might be coming across as a newb here but hey, I just got this phone so give me a break) if there is a way to install my apps directly on the SD card? I know I could root it and install FroYo, but I just paid for a 3 year warranty with Telus that I don't want to void within 20 days of getting the phone.
If anyone has any updates on Telus getting the upgrade anytime soon, do let me know!

So I just downloaded an app that quickly shows battery life, SD space, and disc space. It says I have used 628 of 748 mb on the disc. I thought the phone had an internal memory of 8gb.

Unable to connect my DINC to my PC to look around, move some files etc.
Yes, I have USB Debugging checked. Yes, I select "mount as disk drive" when prompted.
Appears to be charging just fine after I attach it to my PC, then I go to open Windows Explorer and Explorer sits and spins then crashes. In fact, when I close Explorer and go to my desktop, all I get is the wallpaper (no desktop icons etc). Then, when I unplug my phone, computer acts normally. Same PC that I used to root my phone mind you, so somehow it was able to connect to my phone for that process.
Have rebooted the phone as well, all to no avail. One of the advantages of Android and the DINC is the ability to hook up to a PC and move files around...not being able to do this is becoming a bit of a PITA...

I have recently gotten the "low on space" warning. I uninstalled a bunch of apps that were cool to have but rarely used and took up a lot of space. I noticed though that old directories are still on my SD card (and internal storage too I think). What is the best way to SAFELY run a disk cleanup? Any "gotcha's" to watch out for? Is there an app that analyzes my directories and recommends those not needed bases on apps currently installed?

On Sunday I started getting the message "Low on space Phone Storage space is getting low." on the status bar. When I tap it, I'm taken to the "Manage Applications" screen, so it's clear that the message refers to the "Phone Memory," where apps are stored But when I go to Settings > SD card & phone storage here's what I see:
SD Card Total Space: 14.83GB
SD Card Available Space: 6.15GB
Internal Phone Storage Total Space: 6.60GB
Internal Phone Storage Available Space: 6.51GB
Phone Memory Total Space: 748MB
Phone Memory Available Space: 332MB
I've googled looking for solutions and it's obvious that this is a fairly common problem - especially on HTC phones. But the only possible solutions I've found are:
Too many apps are installed & space really is running low
A "bad" app was recently installed causing this error
Clear the cache for HTC Mail and HTC Message apps
Perform a Factory Reset We can rule this out since there is more than 44% of the Phone Memory available.
I didn't install any apps immediately before getting the message, but to be sure I uninstalled the 10 most recently added apps. No luck.
I've gone to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, but the cache for these apps is already zero. The "Data" for Mail is 2.22MB and for Messages is 812KB.
This isn't fixing the problem, it's just a way to eliminate whatever condition has caused the symptom. But without an explanation of the actual problem I see no reason to think the problem won't come back in another two months.

I am running one of the leaked 2.2 OTA Roms, everything has been working fine, except lately, as of a week or two ago, the phone won't mount as Disk Drive unless I reboot, and it wasn't a one time fix, I have to do this every time. I noticed that when I plug the phone into the computer, I don't get the message saying "Charge Only / HTC Sync / Disk Drive / Mobile Broadband Connect etc." And yes, I have it set to ask me every time, and I even set the default connection type to Disk Drive, and still I unplug it and plug it back in and nothing. I know it connected okay, the computer recognizes it as HTC Android device or whatever it calls it, and the orange light lights up on the phone showing that's it's charging, but in my computer all that pops up is a weird optical drive that I can't access.

Monitoring the traffic on the unrEVOked IRC channel, it's clear that there is a ton of confusion about the USB drivers needed, despite the excellent article on the unrEVOked site. I thought I'd maybe add to that or create an alternative article.
There are three different modes in which the Incredible (or the EVO!) can connect to a Windows system:
Disk Drive
ADB (USB Debugging and ClockworkMod Recovery)
BootLoader (while phone is in the HBOOT mode)
The drivers that come with the Android SDK can't do any of it because none of the interfaces for the Incredible are present in the .INF file. The drivers that come with HTC Sync can do #1 and #2, but cannot be used for rooting with unrEVOked because they don't support #3. The following link points to drivers which are universal; they will work for all three purposes on the Incredible (and the EVO as well).
unrEVOked modified USB Driver
You do not have to remove HTC Sync if you have it installed. These drivers will replace the ones that came from HTC Sync and be usable for that as well as rooting. The trick is getting these drivers to replace the ones you have from the Android SDK or HTC Sync or ??? (or simply installing them if you have no drivers yet). The idea is to plug your phone into USB while it's in HBOOT mode, forcing Windows to look for Bootloader drivers. Only the ones here provide that.
Anyway, here's how:
Uninstall HTC Sync, DoubleTwist, and DropBox from the PC. Sorry about this. Once these drivers are installed you may reinstall those and they will continue to work. These drivers are universal.
Unzip the file, leaving the folder Android USB Driver somewhere like on your desktop
Unplug your phone from USB
Power down your phone
Now simultaneously press the volume DOWN button and the power button, holding till the HBOOT screen appears
Now connect the USB cable between the phone and your PC
The word HBOOT (blue box with white letters) will change to HBOOT USB PLUG
On the EVO, wait till HBOOT cycles through an SD check (10 sec) then select select HBOOT USB at the bottom of the menu (using the vol keys to navigate and power button to select). Thanks to hperry for this.
Now look at your Windows Device Manager and see if you already have Android Phone listed for HBOOT as shown in one of the last two images (way) below. To see the Device Manager, right click My Computer, select Manage..., select the Device Manager. If you see the Android Phone, you're ready to root and can skip the rest of this. Otherwise, you do not have HBOOT-capable drivers, and you need to install them. Windows should be looking for drivers now. At this point things may differ between XP and Vista/7.
In XP, the New Hardware Found Wizard should appear. Tell it NOT to use Windows Update, and moving along, tell it to look in a specified location. It will pop up a file open dialog. Navigate to the Android USB Driver folder, click OK then click Next.
For Windows Vista/7 you might not see the New Hardware Found Wizard. Open the Device Manager (Right click My Computer, select Manage..., select the Device Manager). You will see an Android Phone node in the tree with a "caution" icon node beneath it. Right click on the caution-marked node and select Update Driver. Follow through specifying NOT to look in Windows Updatte and Install from a specified location. It will pop up a file open dialog. Navigate to the Android USB Driver folder, click OK, then click Next.
In either case, eventually the driver should install. At this point you have the universal drivers installed for the Incredible. They can also be used with the HTC EVO. Here's what you should see in the Windows Device Manager for each condition:
Phone Running Normally, USB Debugging Enabled, plugged in via USB:
Windows 7
Windows XP
Phone running HBOOT, plugged in via USB:
Phone showing HBOOT
Windows 7
Windows XP

Hi guys. I have checked all the low on space threads and i feel like mines is definitely an odd ball
When i click on the notification it sends me to my Manage Apps menu. The Manage Apps menu kind of freezes and all the apps show but the disk space says "computing..." and doesn't change
This is the current amount of space I have in my phone.
SD card - Total space = 7.42GB / Avail. space = 7.05gb
Internal phone storage - Total space = 6.6gb / Avail. space = 6.53gb
Phone memory - Total space = 748MB / Avail space = 696MB
I have tried clearing the internet cache and etc..still to no avail. the phone seems to be functioning fine except for the notification that bugs me.

Is there a way, after obtaining root, that I can make the App Storage bigger? I don't feel like I have that many apps installed, and I don't feel like HTC gives enough space for apps on the phone, when there is 8 gigs on board space. This, and the ability to connect to Ad-Hoc wifi connections would be the only reason why I would root.

Ever since I update the Facebook app this weekend, I've been getting the "Low on space" messaage. Not true, I have 637 of 748MB. This is only thing that has been updated. I have maybe 20 apps installed.
Anyways, I noticed that this thing kept syncing for hours. I saw it was the Facebook app that was syncing. I went and checked my contacts and I had hundreds of entries for several diffifrent contacts.
I uninstalled the app and removed the Facebook data. Now the dialer and contacts will not pull up. Curse you Facebook.
Does it look like I need to reset? Battery pull did nothing.
