HTC Incredible :: How To Change / Switch Keyboards?
Jul 9, 2010
I have swype installed on my phone, but when I press and hold on the text field (what I've read here to switch keyboards) the only thing that comes up is 'insert quick text'. I tried switching it in settings > language & keyboard but nothing worked in there either.

I saw a thread about this the other day, and cant find it for the life of me. basically, it lets you use swype or something in portrait, and switches to a multitouch keyboard in landscape. any idea what it was called?

I installed the Swype keyboard however there are times I want to use the default keyboard. Is there any way to switch between keyboards quickly without having to go to the settings?

Its awful. I can't get settled in. I keep changing my keyboard from stock, to swype, to swiftkey and now back to droidx latest version. Hate to say it but as of know I'm digging droid x, until I go back to stock in a few more days. Its just amazing that I can't make up my keyboard mind. Swype was the bomb, until I make just one mistake.

I searched around on xda and this forum today without much luck. 2.2 ported keyboards all seem to require root, which I do not have.Anyone have info or a link for a ported keyboard like the DX multi touch? That's what I was using prior to the update.

I like swype for regular use... but prefer the stock for landscape typing. Can I have both without having to keep switching?

ne0fhyk has created an app (root required) that will allow you to choose which keyboard you want to use in each orientation. i've always felt the stock keyboard was far superior in landscape mode, while swype was ideal for portrait.

Ok So I am running 2.2 (RUU) and I was wondering
1. Should I switch S to ON - is there some issue (besides that VZW may notice on a return) to NOT keep S-off? Does it create a security hole?
2. If I am S-on can I still do Nandroid backups and restores/flash new ROMS (I think no)

I've had my D1 since it's original launch. Love the phone and especially now that it's rooted. The problem is the slider is becoming loose. I'm going to get it replaced and am really considering the Dinc.I've found that I rarely use the slide out keyboard on the D1 because of the Swype keyboard love that thing.I'm looking for some insight on the Dinc and especially how it compares to the D1.How does Sense work? Does it slow down the phone? How has the update process gone so far? Anything else I need to know?

I did a search and couldn't find exactly what Im looking for. If there is a thread out there with this info, please let me know so we can remove this thread. I rooted my Incredible yesterday after a couple months of contemplating it (I know ) And I think I want to try Virtuous ROM. So say I go to Virtuous, but end up wanting to go back to how I have it now (stock, root, froyo). Is that going to be hard? Is that what the nandroid backup is for? Say I go to Virtuous, then decide I wanna try Cyanogen. Do I just flash the new one after doing a Nandroid, then if I dont like Cyanogen I can just open the backup and bam it's back to Virtuous? Nub questions I know, but Im skerred. Last night I installed the rotary lockscreen from Virtuous on my stock rooted rom and I really like it. If I decide I dont like it, how hard is it to change something as small as an addon, rather than the whole ROM?

Currently I am using a blackberry tour and soon I will have the incredible. What is the easiest way to transfer contacts and whatever else possible to the incredible? Thought of desktop manager but that is only good when transferring to another blackberry. I know i could probably just bring it to Verizon but if i don't have to thats great too.

On the 2nd of this month i switched to the Eris and I absolutely love ALMOST everything about it. The main problems I have are the lag and the no flash. The lag is a lot worse than i thought it would be. I didn't think I would mind no flash when I bought it but didn't realize how much I was going to miss not having it. From what i have read it seems like the incredible would fix both of these problems. I got the phone for only $29 because i signed up for a new two year contract. What are my opinions for switching to an incredible since i will still be in the first 30 days when the incredible is released. about how much extra will it cost me? Thanks for any tips or advice.

I searched online and tried fooling around with the phone forever, but was wondering why the side volume controls control the media volume and not the ringer volume when on the main screen. Any idea if there is a way to switch this? Like I am at work and just want to lower the volume I have to dig into the settings for ringer volume and wish I can just do it from the main screen by using the side buttons.

Is there a quick way to switch between apps ? While some programs you just click on the icon again, that doesn't always work. With podkast for example it'll just run the program twice.

I'm new to Android development. I'm trying to use the orientation change to switch between two activities. My idea is to use three Activities one TabActivity and a normal Activity. Here is some pseudo code:
public class Main extends Activity{
// this is the entry point into my app
@Override
public void onCreate(...){
if(this.getResources().getConfiguration().orientation == Configuration.ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE){
// Start Activity1
} else { //Start Activity2}..............
I'm taking a different approach. As i need a TabActivity, because i want to be able to start different activities in my tabs (I think i have to use a TabActivity in this case). I've edited the Manifest.xml and added android.configChanges="orientation" for the TabActivity and the second Activity. Then I've overridden the onConfigurationChanged() functions. With this approach I'm able to switch from landscape (this is the "normal" activity") to portrait (the TabActivity). The other way round does not work and i don't know why yet. I've exactly the same onConfigurationChanged functions (Copy & Pasted) and only changed the essential parts. Overriding the onConfigurationChanged of the Activities started in the tabs has no effect, too.

Its offical. I spoke with Verizon today and they confirmed the news we've heard. If you are tired of waiting for the Inc. You will have the opportunity to switch your order to a Droid X. This is huge news. Inc is slated to be shipped until end of the month first of next month. So whos going to swtich? If the review is as great as Inc. Consider me gone! Im going with the Droid X.

Will I just be able to take my SD card from my Droid1 and just pop it into an Incredible (which is what Asurion is replacing my Droid1 with after being run over)? Can I just leave all the files and folders alone without running into some conflicts?

Can someone please outline what I need to do to switch from my 2gig to my 16gig without losing everything? Is it as simple as copying the 2gig to a folder on my computer, and throwing that folder in the 16 gig?

Twice this has happened: Turn the phone off to charge, in the morning the phone won't turn on with the power switch. I have to remove the battery and re-install it, for the phone to come on.
Anyone else have this happening?

Not sure if this is a problem or if it has always been like this-I was out on Friday night and had my phone laying flat horizontally-I tried to get it into landscape mode by rotating-it wouldn't work. The only way I could get it to flip into landscape mode was to hold it vertically. Is there something wrong with my phone or am I imagining things?

If you have an original unedited APN for the Incredible, please post it. I believe the app Quick Settings added the [disabled] to the APN file when I attempted to use the Mobile Data Switch. See below. Now Quick Settings Says "No APN Configured". I've emailed the dev. If so, I will remove the [disabled] to restore the file to its original state. Everything seemed to be working fine despite the [disabled] setting though, but I didn't test MMS. Current (modified by Quick Settings?) APN File from my Verizon HTC Droid Incredible:
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='yes' ?>
<apns>
<apn name="Production" numeric="00000" mcc="000" mnc="00" apn="1[disabled]" user="null"
server="null" password="null" proxy="null" port="null" mmsproxy="null" mmsport="null"
mmsprotocol="2.0" mmsc="http://mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms" type="mms[disabled]" />
</apns>
I used APN Backup & Restore to save the file to the SDCard so I could view and edit the file using a text editor (such as notepad) in windows. You can get APN Backup & Restore on the market for free.
