HTC Incredible : Best Autostart / Startup Killer For Root
Jul 1, 2010
I was wondering what you guys use to kill unneeded apps at startup. Right now I am using Startup Manager, but I don't feel like it's doing the job right. Any other suggestions?Sorry if this is in the wrong topic, but I figured it did have to with rooted apps

I have rooted my phone and have now the recovery mode from HD blog. It's was working fine. So I tried to get the Galaxhero ROM installed. I did the following steps:
1) Reboot in recovery mode (Volume down + both Call buttons) and choose "Nandroid backup" to save a backup of your current ROM just in case.
2) Backup G apps
3) Then, choose "Wipe data/factory reset". The phone will reboot in recovery mode again.
4) Choose "Apply sdcard:update.zip" (second menu entry on the recovery screen)
5) Restore Google applications ("Restore G.Apps")
6) "Enable root (su)".
But then enable root failed! Anyway I went on further with reboot system. It rebooted till the "android HD logo" showed up and then suddenly the screen went off and it seemed like my phone went off. So I went back to the recovery mode and did the following steps:
Wipe data
Restore backup
Restore G apps
Enable root SU, but again enable su failed!!
Again I choose reboot system, and when the reboot came again to the "android HD logo". It stuck there and stayed looping.
First, why do I still see the android HD logo again because I did a wipe!
Second, How can I get my phone working again!

Every time I start my phone it seems that every program in the app catalog starts up. Until I activate the Advanced Task Killer and shut them all down, the thing runs like a hog. I have quite a few programs installed, but I dont use them all all of the time. Why do they all start up and is there any way beside the ATK to stop them? Is there any way to modify the startup files?

I have problem with either YouTube (latest version) app, or Autostarts 1.7.5 app. When I turn off autostart of YouTube app in pretty much every single event with Autostarts 1.7.5 app I get what I wanted - no YouTube self-start. It's great. But problem is when I start YouTube app manually then magically settings for this application in Autostarts app is gone...

Self explanatory. I really want this to go away. It's (frankly) embarrassing when I turn it on at work. It used to be silent, with the exception of notification sounds on booting up.

This is starting to get really annoying. I'm trying to limit my use of the Advanced task Killer, but it seems like some apps REALLY LIKE being on and running - especially after a reboot.
I have NEVER used the FM Radio app, but it's always on - WHY?
Others, like YouTube and Key Ring, I use, but not very often - why would they be running after a reboot?

I am experiencing a weird problem. On startu,p while the notification bar is displaying "preparing sd card" and "preparing phone storage" a strange tone is played. It sounds like a ringtone preview...but it doesn't sound pleasant. It makes you believe that there is an error somewhere, but there is no verbal notification. I recently updated several apps at once and installed a new one. I thought this may be the problem, but I still have the sound after uninstalling new app.

I want a task killer that automatically kills processes when they load. Some apps like HTC sense and the built in messanger app I would love having them killed instantly, is there one that i can get? Before you say, yes the Eris DOES need a task killer. Asked any eris user, once it gets below 30 MB of ram, it slows down to a near halt. They majority of thos for me is processes that load without me telling them too, and ons that I never use, such as htc sense or the default messager apps. I'm rooted btw.

I know there are apps like Autostarts that do this, but I'm looking for a way to do it via the shell. Is there a directory or file within Android that stores startup stuff? For example in Windows, I'd look in All Programs/Startup or something.

Is it bad? i see some people seem against it saying android OS does a find job of it by itself. but yet ill see things in the task list that i haven't even opened always opening up. i also feel like killing tasks seems to improve the battery life. lets hear some thoughts and reasoning for Using and NOT using a task killer.

I know many have the Droid issue where the music app will automatically start and play with certain headsets. It seems this is related to some headsets causing an erroneous media button event when plugged, unplugged or moved. I understand that rooted users can use the Autostarts app to disable the music app from starting. This is for non-rooted users who are looking of an alternative.
I've created a few Tasker scripts that seem to eliminate the problem. First I created a task that runs an android media stop command and displays a popup so I know when the event occurs. Then I created 2 profiles that use this task. Media button play and media button next. Both profiles have grab and stop checked. This seems to stop the music player from starting when a headset sends a bad event to my droid.

Coming from having iphone for 3 years, so please forgive the dumb questions. Am I understanding that only way to close an app to free memory is an app like task killer? And if i turn therm off using this app, they will just turn back on of i press the program again? Is there any recommended memory setting that we should run at? So if start a game like black jack, if I go to task killer, uncheck it, it will load normally next time I play?

First let me explain how I use Advanced Task Killer (ATK). I use all the default settings with the exception that Auto Start is off. What I do is, every now and then, I open ATK and kill every app that shows up on the list, including ATK itself.
I've had my Incredible for about a month; I've been doing the exact same thing for about that long as well. However, recently (maybe a week or two, I am not sure), once out of every handful of times when I ask ATK to kill all appls, ATK kills them, but the white background with green "htc" logo shows up for a second or two. (It looks kind of like when the phone first boots up.) Then it goes to my home screen, but it looks dim and fuzzy, like when you turn off your phone where a rectangle pops up in the middle of the screen saying the phone is shutting down while your home screen is dim and fuzzy. Instead of saying the phone is shutting down, however, the rectangle box in the middle says "Loading..." I do not know what it is loading.
My impression is that when I ask ATK to kill all the apps on the list, it somehow kills some "important" ones so then my phone immediately reopens those apps hence the "Loading..." screen. What is puzzling, however, is that it just started doing this recently. I do not think I have made any major changes to my phone in the last few weeks.
I have tried to pay attention to the apps that ATK kills before I kill them; I have not been able to spot any pattern.
Does anyone have the same experience? Or does anyone know what is happening here? As far as I can tell, my phone runs fine, but it is a little bit disconcerting when that "Loading..." screen shows up every now and again.

Sorry for yet another task killer thread, but I can't find an answer to this one. I understand from several of you that task killers are not needed because of the way the Android system operates. I have tried and tried all of the suggestions given on how to manage apps manually, but my Inc is just plain faster when I close all running apps.My question is this, is running a task killer harmful in any way?

I was just wondering if anyone had the same issue as I do, with about 44% of my battery use coming from the notorious call standby.
I heard some speculation that this is akin to the issue with the Eris 2.1, so it would be solved by the Airplane Mode trick, but I have not found any results favoring that remedy.

I just installed AppBrain Market yesterday. I have done one phone power off since then. I was just looking in at apps in my System Panel app and noticed that the AppBrain market is listed as cached but is still hitting the cpu like every couple seconds. Anyone else noticed this behavior? Is this normal? I'm going to try manually killing the app.

Should be installed and used in the Incredible. In fact the store Mgr said they download it to every Inc they sell in the store before the customer leaves with it. Now I have heard many pros and cons about this app. mostly cons.

Anyway, I just wanted for everyone to post their favorite Task Manager/Killer, and why, and if there are any flaws. I personally use Advanced Task Killer Free. It has a simple UI, and the when you select or unselect apps it remebers it so next time you launch the app you can only remove the apps that you usually do, and keep ones that always run. It doesn't slow down or break the system.
