HTC Hero :: Does Branded Phone Need Branded Update?
Jun 7, 2010
please forgive my stupid question but i'm new to android after coming over from the horror of windows mobile i just got an unlocked hero off ebay with orange branded firmware (only noticable on startup splash screen) (build number 2.73.61.66 / i can only find mention of it in an italian forum!)am i right in thinking that when the new 2.1 update comes out, i can get it off the htc site and install it on the phone regardless of the orange branding, or do i have to wait for the orange update (i assume this only applies to orange customers?) in which case i'll be going down the rooting/custom rom route.i've been lurking here for the past 2 weeks and learnt so much, great forum, and i have to say i am absolutely smitten with the hero, it's astonishing

The phone is the htc desire, it's unlocked but not unbranded from t-mobile and currently with o2. I got the OTA for 2.2 and didn't update it because the last time I updated it caused my WiFi to fork up meaning my first two weeks of owning a desire meant waiting for it to come back from HTC repair. Adding salt to the wound, it came back locked meaning I had to fork out another tenner to unlock again. so question! does anyone have experience of updating to 2.2 on an unlocked but branded phone (on t mobile). Will it lock the phone again?

I been reading loads on the ota update, yet my orange branded (and no i will not unbrand it!) and several other users from the sound of it say phone up to date when trying a manual update on the phone, does anyone have any idea when orange might make this available to us or will we have to be content with being second class desire owners!?

I had a orange branded hero and set about modding it. I used flashrec and recovery-RA-hero-v1.6.2.img. I did everything the noobie guides state and it seemed to have worked. I then flashed with a custom rom 2.9-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed.zip. after a while, the phone was successfully de branded.
Then i wanted to flash the phone with h3g uk official rom, as my phone was unlocked and i had a contract 3 sim. I was told to flash splhard1_update_signed.zip. I did this and since then my phone wont switch on? I have tried removing battery, home & power but the phone just stays blank...

I have a no-brand (full price, 499 €) X10 bought in Italy as soon as released on the market. I still have the old R1FA014 firmware, and both SEUS and the OTA application say that I already have the most recent firmware. However the rest of the world had R1FA016 and now some operator-branded phones are receiving R2BA020 firmware. How it is possible that branded phones are receiving the update before full price unbranded phones? I'm so dissatisfied with Sony Ericsson. I always had Ericsson phones, but now I'm really disappointed.

When searching around about getting rid of the branding on a desire everyone talks about rooting and using some other developers version of android. Is there no way to just install the proper original stock untouched virgin, HTC desire factory rom on the device. So that my device is as HTC intended. Why do i have to use some developers rom that has been messed with? Surely thats as bad as having a version that orange have butchered? Please advise.

I successfully rooted my phone, its still branded to Virgin Mobile but I want Froyo, can I just use the stock Froyo or does it have to be a custom ROM for me to get 2.2, 2.1 is out dated now and I want the new version and waiting for Virgin is a joke.

I've rad through all of the guides relating to unrooting and the one thing that I can't seem to find is the Orange 2.1 RUU.exe thats what I'm meant to be looking for). Orange UK have just released 2.2 and i want to get it.So my question is this, is it possible to unroot it? If it isn't. I'll get it replaced but then I would like to help the community by ripping the stock rom if that is possible.

I followed the guide to the letter (gold carded) and received the Network locked screen after installing the HTC ROM ending 405.5 and receiving the updates for 2.1. By the way my Hero is Orange branded with Orange SIM and the product number is 99HHM022-00. Apart from waiting for Orange to release the update, whats my options? Read through numerous threads, but I'm confused whether an unlock code would work or whether its just better to bite the bullet and go for a Villain ROM that allows apps to install to SD cards. IF I was to go for a Villian ROM would that contain a compatible radio for my Orange phone, and would the Villain ROM work on my Orange branded Hero by just following their guide? I dont really want to have to wipe my phone again if its not going to work, so was just asking you guys for advice?

Just about to root my girls branded Desire. When I did it before I had to debrand. From what I've just been reading is it just a case of using Unrevoked 3.21 now? No need to create goldcard etc? Been so long since I did mine it looks like its changed a bit.

I've been looking through this forum for a while now as i wanted to find a way of getting rid of the bloatware on my Orange Desire.I decided to try "Rooting" and used the Unrevoked 3.1 method which seemd to work as i have a new "app" called "Superuser".However, i have now developed cold feet as i don't understand what a nandroid backup is and i can't find a definitive answer on whether i need to:
A) Unlock the phone first cos it's Orange?
B) Create a 'Goldcard'?
C) Simply flash a custom ROM like the stock Froyo 2.2 or something from MoCado?
D) or leave well alone cos it's way too risky of becoming an Orange brick.
Therefore I'd like to know if i can return the phone to it's original pre rooted state? Is there a way that was as simple as rooting it using Unrevoked?

I have a tablet NaviaTec, running ICS. Google doesn't support, because this tablet is not so popular cuz it's very cheap. Sometimes when I charge it overnight, in the morning I get Encryption unsuccessful screen. I read 5-6 different threads but all are different methods for different devices.

My desire is currently an orange branded handset.I'm going to be rooting fairly soon, but want to make sure on something first.Several people have said they have rooted orange branded handsets and installed custom Roms. Is there any way to know if a Rom will work before trying it?Plus how do you know that the Rom and radio version will not simlock the phone or knacker the WiFi?Do I just have to read the instructions very carefully on each Rom? Or is there another way?

I recently updated OTA to Froyo on my Desire( sorta forgot to backup all my apps due to sheer excitement that i got froyo , im pretty noob to android and smart phones ).I am very interested in rooting my phone but only reason i didnt look into it much further in Eclair was the reason that it voided warranty so just incase something happened i didnt root it.But now im leaving the country and it dont matter and i got froyo i want to root my phone. There are many tutorials on how to root but being a noob im not really 100% on the process. So here are my questions:
Can i root my 2.2 htc desire? How do i root it? What methods are the easy and safest way? What ROMs should i use?
And if you guys can point out anything else i need that would be awesome.

I got my phone on Orange UK and was wandering if anyone has managed to get the official Froyo update through Kies for a branded Orange UK Galaxy S?Every time I check Kies tells me the latest firmware is on my phone, but I'm sure I read a post from Beards stating all Galaxy S phones should be able to get the update by 11th and its the 12th now and still no update showing for me.

Great news, someone confirmed that web2go unlimited data works with the new Galaxy S Vibrant T-mobile Android phone. Grandfathered T-Zones Data: Discuss All Related Questions Here ONLY Before this, only our Behold 2 allowed this (nexus one does too, but not considered tmo branded). For many, this was only reason we stuck with behold 2.

I'm going to debrand and update to 2.1 but before I do that I want to save my current 1.6 branded version so I can rebrand in case I need it. I can't seem to find any posts that tell me where it is or how to get to it or is it even possible to rebrand and install my vodaphone 1.6 back on it?

I am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.
1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!
2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.
3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?
4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?
5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.
6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?

I have a Virgin Mobile branded HTC Desire with a Virgin Mobile SIM card. The handset was purchased outright. The contract is a rolling 30-day contract so I can cancel at any time.I'd like to move to O2 purely for the coverage. How do I go about debranding the handset and (I presume) unlocking it so that I can use an O2 SIM card in it?

This is excellent. I was feeling slightly overwhelmed since I got my Hero due to all the possibilities for apps/customising etc - but this thread has made it a lot easier to work things out. Would still like to have an easy way of editing my contacts though. Brought them over from my old sim and the names are messed up and numbers missing etc. I thought there might have been a way to do it on my PC, but not looked for anything yet.
