I recently updated OTA to Froyo on my Desire( sorta forgot to backup all my apps due to sheer excitement that i got froyo , im pretty noob to android and smart phones ).I am very interested in rooting my phone but only reason i didnt look into it much further in Eclair was the reason that it voided warranty so just incase something happened i didnt root it.But now im leaving the country and it dont matter and i got froyo i want to root my phone.There are many tutorials on how to root but being a noob im not really 100% on the process.So here are my questions:
Can i root my 2.2 htc desire? How do i root it? What methods are the easy and safest way? What ROMs should i use?
And if you guys can point out anything else i need that would be awesome.

My desire is currently an orange branded handset.I'm going to be rooting fairly soon, but want to make sure on something first.Several people have said they have rooted orange branded handsets and installed custom Roms. Is there any way to know if a Rom will work before trying it?Plus how do you know that the Rom and radio version will not simlock the phone or knacker the WiFi?Do I just have to read the instructions very carefully on each Rom? Or is there another way?

The UK HTC TV adverts show a Desire, and the tag that you can simply flip your phone to silence it.

I'm trying to change the ringer mode of the phone to RINGER_MODE_SILENT when a call is incoming by using the following lines of code.
CODE:...............
While the phone stops ringing it continue to vibrate although the documentation of RINGER_MODE_SILENT says it should also stop vibrating.
I'm using the SDK 1.6
UPDATE:
As I didn't find a solution yet, I tried to deactivate the vibration settings manually.
am.setVibrateSetting(AudioManager.VIBRATE_TYPE_RINGER, AudioManager.VIBRATE_SETTING_OFF );
But this also doesn't prevent the phone form vibrating when a call is incoming.
UPDATE 2:
Today I tried to solve the problem by canceling the vibration via a Vibration object.
Vibrator vib = (Vibrator) getSystemService(Context.VIBRATOR_SERVICE);
vib.cancel();
Again, without success. Now I'm running out of ideas and asking myself if it is possible to stop the vibration at all.
UPDATE 3:
I've discovered another interesting fact when I've reread the documentation of the Vibrator class. The documentation says:
"If your process exits, any vibration
you started with will stop."

please forgive my stupid question but i'm new to android after coming over from the horror of windows mobile i just got an unlocked hero off ebay with orange branded firmware (only noticable on startup splash screen) (build number 2.73.61.66 / i can only find mention of it in an italian forum!)am i right in thinking that when the new 2.1 update comes out, i can get it off the htc site and install it on the phone regardless of the orange branding, or do i have to wait for the orange update (i assume this only applies to orange customers?) in which case i'll be going down the rooting/custom rom route.i've been lurking here for the past 2 weeks and learnt so much, great forum, and i have to say i am absolutely smitten with the hero, it's astonishing

I am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.
1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!
2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.
3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?
4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?
5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.
6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?

Is there a Froyo ROM out there that doesnt have a 10 minute boot time?
OK it is not exactly 10 minutes but my boot times seem to have grown from 2.01 to 2.1 to rooted 2.1 and rooted Froyo. Plain Vanilla Froyo 1ghz

I have a Virgin Mobile branded HTC Desire with a Virgin Mobile SIM card.The handset was purchased outright. The contract is a rolling 30-day contract so I can cancel at any time.I'd like to move to O2 purely for the coverage.How do I go about debranding the handset and (I presume) unlocking it so that I can use an O2 SIM card in it?

Just about to root my girls branded Desire. When I did it before I had to debrand. From what I've just been reading is it just a case of using Unrevoked 3.21 now? No need to create goldcard etc? Been so long since I did mine it looks like its changed a bit.

When searching around about getting rid of the branding on a desire everyone talks about rooting and using some other developers version of android.Is there no way to just install the proper original stock untouched virgin, HTC desire factory rom on the device. So that my device is as HTC intended.Why do i have to use some developers rom that has been messed with? Surely thats as bad as having a version that orange have butchered?Please advise.

I've been looking through this forum for a while now as i wanted to find a way of getting rid of the bloatware on my Orange Desire.I decided to try "Rooting" and used the Unrevoked 3.1 method which seemd to work as i have a new "app" called "Superuser".However, i have now developed cold feet as i don't understand what a nandroid backup is and i can't find a definitive answer on whether i need to:
A) Unlock the phone first cos it's Orange?
B) Create a 'Goldcard'?
C) Simply flash a custom ROM like the stock Froyo 2.2 or something from MoCado?
D) or leave well alone cos it's way too risky of becoming an Orange brick.
Therefore I'd like to know if i can return the phone to it's original pre rooted state?Is there a way that was as simple as rooting it using Unrevoked?

I follow the instructions exactly on this page (and some of the other tutorials) but they always seem to be missing some key information as they dont work out of the box
I added a bunch of packages that seemed like were missing, but now I'm stuck.
http://developer.android.com/resources/tutorials/views/hello-gridview.html
Description Resource Path Location Type Conversion to Dalvik format failed with error 1 HelloGrid Unknown Android Packaging Problem
And a whole bunch of these for each of the drawable.sample_* references
Description Resource Path Location Type R.drawable.sample_0 cannot be resolved ImageAdapter.java /HelloGrid/src/com/example/ImageAdapter line 51 Java Problem
CODE:....
As you can see I have all the images loaded in the /drawable directory

I've rad through all of the guides relating to unrooting and the one thing that I can't seem to find is the Orange 2.1 RUU.exe thats what I'm meant to be looking for). Orange UK have just released 2.2 and i want to get it.So my question is this, is it possible to unroot it? If it isn't. I'll get it replaced but then I would like to help the community by ripping the stock rom if that is possible.

Like the the post says my wireless tether no longer works( at leat not fast ) with any of my 2.2 nandroid backup I have all the wireless thether downloads ( the 2.0.2 and all the 2.0.5 versions ) and they just stoped transfering or transfer really slow. By slow I mean it will take anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute sometimes longer for a page to load. This is the case with all my 2.2 roms Damage Control 3.5, Baked Snack 1.0 and 1.5, Fresh 3.something and even my stock 2.2 rooted rom. This is the case with any kernel and I have been using various Kings, (but tend to stick with Netarchy's kernels) All with the same problem. Everything else works flawlessly.
This wouldnt be a big deal except I use wireless tether everyday for homework so it is a must have for me. I had to use the tether feature on my wifes Palm Pre (you know how that made me feel) I have her phone overclocked to 800mhz and it felt as if her battery was going to melt or explode, which usuall happens if you use it for too long. I had to get an Ice pack and put a towel on it to keep the phone cool while tethering.
I even tried it with flashing new room and kernel and the only app being all the versions of the wireless tether. That still was a no/go.
I however did find a solution but not a good one. I had a nandroid back up of a HTC 2.1 stock rooted rom with Nand unlocked and with the FPS un capped. This however when I look for wireless networks to connect to on my computer, it shows up as 3computer connected together instead of the 5 escalating bars like in the att comercials (dont ban me for that)
but it works perfectly and lightning fast. The version I'm usuing is the 2.0.2 version not any of the 2.0.5 versions.
I know this is a bit drawn out but can anyone explain why this happened? I mean it worked one night and the next it didnt. Or can someone can someone explain why it works on 2.1 and not on 2.2?
I miss some of my 2.2 feature but there are none that I can't live without but I would like to be on the latest software version.
