I'm going away few days (Volcano permitting) and was just wondering if I use Google Maps outside of the UK will I need mobile internet.
Can I use Google Maps with the GPS turned on and the mobile internet turned off?

i just bought my htc from 2 days ago and i am very pleased by the screen performance and the speed performance and the large amount of options and programs you get with this phone.here is the problem , when i use google maps the mobile must connect to the internet to download the maps and this really cost me alot of money in my country , so my questions is ' is there an option or a way to download those maps using the pc and save them to my htc desire?

I am trying to host custom KML files on a server behind my firewall and display those KML files on the Android emulator. I started by writing a simple app that uses an Intent to display the overlay and pointing the app at geo:0,0?q=
http://code.google.com/apis/kml/documentation/KML_Samples.kml. This works in the emulator.
Next I downloaded that KML file and posted it on my web server (Apache 2.2 on Fedora). I added an AddType directive for the .kml extension and restarted HTTPD. When I point my simple app's Intent to my internally hosted KML file I get the error "The community map could not be displayed because it contains errors." I added some code to try and download the KML file independently of the KML so I could check the status line and the like:

I am experiencing an issue where I am able to browse the internet fine but Google maps can't access the internet via my 3G connection.I have reset my phone back to its default settings but it is still having the same issue.

View 3 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine has just bought one, and cannot connect to the internet using his SIM card at all. He can receive calls fine but for some reason the mobile internet does not work even though his SIM is enabled for it. His phone does not have Market, but SlideMe, which suggests it is a Malaysian Hero (I think)? I don't know if this is the reason.
I tried my SIM card in his Hero and, again, it will not connect to mobile internet. I checked the settings and under Mobile Network Settings/Access Point Names there is nothing and none of the fields are completed (I never had to set this up on my Hero, it was automatically completed by my SIM Card/Provider once switched on).
Have a HTC Hero locked to orange but I'm currently using it on o2 PAYG via a rebel SIM (o2 claim not to support the hero). Have never had functioning MMS and mobile internet although I can connect using wireless. I have changed my APN settings.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Hero today, and it looks like if it's always connected to mobile internet. The "E" icon is always there. What does that mean? I would prefer my HTC to connect only periodically. For example every 15 minutes to check my emails and sync my calendar. Is that possible? I think the battery life would much be better if we could do that, and I personally don't need my mobile phone to be connected to the internet 24 hours a day!
View 15 Replies View RelatedI recently brought a HTC Hero from Three (3) mobile on PAYG, unlocked it with no problems and got myself a sim only contract with T-Mobile.However I am trying to access the internet over the t-mobile network and it wont let me get anywhere, always bringing up the 'Web page is not availiable' screen. I have no issues running the internet over wi-fi and I am receiving calls and texts over the t-mobile network so I assume its not a sim issue (the contract includes data allowance btw). Also the sim that 3 mobile gave me with the phone accesses mobile internet perfectly.Does anyone on here have any suggestions as to what things I could try to rectify this problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got my HTC Hero the other day and am very very happy with it. The only problem is that I cannot connect to the internet through "Mobile Network". I am on a "3" contract and I am able to access "my 3" which is where I can look at my account, look at my last bill, check my usage, etc. I can also connect to 3 - Home - that loads fine. But any other website (google, bbc, facebook, etc.) will not load - it just times out after a while.
It seams obvious to me that this is an issue with my account on 3. I don't know how many hours I've been on the phone to these guys. I have gone through all the settings with them, more than twice - replaced my SIM card and tried my SIM in another phone. So Three are now looking into it and have passed my issue onto the network's team, now they said that it may take up to 21 days for someone to get back to me!
I have the G2 Touch on T-Mobile and it comes with "unlimited internet" but the fair usage policy is 4GB. I was wondering how much internet usage would I need to do to get close to this and is it even possible to use this much?

I'd be using the Hero without a data plan for at least the first few months, therefore I was wondering if it is possible to disable all forms of mobile internet. I still want WiFi, but nothing I will be charged for such as GSM/GPRS etc. I'm sure this will be possible but I want to be sure before I buy. And what's battery life like?

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I try and use this the maps often don't appear even when outside, just get left with the grid. Should I do a reset ? (& bearing in mind I still can't get HTC Sync to install on my pc) or is it more likely to be related to the network ? I have both wireless and gps enabled and the latest version of google maps. Sky map seems to work fine (so uses the compass) but not google maps so can't get a map most of the time let alone streetview.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recieved my HTC Hero today (second hand) and under build number it has MoDaCo Custom ROM 3.1 Core.
So i assume this means it is running a rooted ROM. Problem is there is no google maps on my phone and i cant seem to get it from the market, nor the google maps website. I did a factory reset before i used the phone.
Right basically you can find the UK T mobile internet settings on the T mobile website. On the Speed Test app, the highest speeds I get are 1.8m/bs downloads and around 500kpbs upload. However, those were at off peak times at night etc (probably when nobody is using the net).Generally I get anything from 0.3 m/bs to 0.9 m/bs though. Lately I've been experiencing some inconsistent internet speeds and reconnection attempts so for I've gone back to the default settings. Tbh though I'm not sure if it makes much difference.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI used Google Maps as I had some running around to do. I was not using GPS, I have it turned off and have full HSPA (H) showing on phone. Anyways, I put in my first stop and GMaps gave me the directions right away... so no problem.After I was done at the first place, I put in my second stop. GMaps showed exactly the same directions . I've been home now for about 1/2 and still, the exact same directions no matter what I put in.I have not turned the phone off/on or anything like that, because quite frankly, I shouldn't have to!Anyone get this happening with GMaps?

I downloaded the app "Trapster", which is a police notification overlay on top of Google Maps. It has the feature of over-riding the sleep timer and keeps the display always on. Disabling the sleep timer is not an option. I would like Google Maps to have the same functionality a 3rd party overlay app is giving me.

Being on the Hero, GM is pre-loaded and I don't know how to update it to the new version (since it's not listed in my Market downloaded, being that it was pre-loaded on the phone).Does it automatically do it, or do I have to uninstall and grab the new version from the Market? I went into the settings, but there was nothing there to check for updates, just 'Latitude' and the other standard options.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen i used google maps with my N96 it used to load up first and show my approximate location, so it would guess where I was to the nearest 100metres or something like that, and then when the GPS loaded up it pinpointed my exact location. Is it possible to do that with google maps for the hero?
It would make using things like "places directory" and generally getting directions with google maps a lot easier if you could check out something indoors, then it would lock down your location when you went outside and found your gps.
