HTC Hero :: Transitioning From PALM

Dec 9, 2009

I have gotten tired of waiting for palm to get with the program and create a new 3g phone for at&t got lured into hero and like it but am having trouble transitioning. I have done the sync with google and have all my memos under contacts and my contacts are a mess. I know if i put in the time and clean it up. It will be helpful howerver, i'm missing epocrates, my todo list, the accessibility to enter txt into the calendar without going thru so many steps. so many things about palm that were intuitive and easy are not so easy and require so many more steps on the hero. The same problem i had with iphone. My question: any one else found an easy way to transition between palm and hero? Any tips or advice on how to make things easier apps for to do lists that have similar notifications as they were on palm. Anything to have the best of both worlds?

HTC Hero :: Migrating From Palm OS

Sep 6, 2009

Getting a Hero next month and from an initial search on the web their doesn't seem to be an easy way to port over calendar and contacts from my centro to the Hero. Looks like it can be done (I don't use outlook) but just wondered if there were any easy tools, e.g., Sprite, that work for the old Palm OS.

HTC Hero : Palm Pre's Video Recording Was Better

Jul 30, 2010

My old phone, that piece of crap, had higher resolution .mp4, better audio and certainly better video recording properties. How come the HTC Hero doesn't?

It's a MUCH better phone and that's why I switched. Is there anyway to fix this?

Android :: Transitioning From VS2010 To Eclipse IDE

Aug 27, 2010

I've been developing VB.Net for years and C++/VB before that. I've also got some PHP experience. I'm now moving to Java to write an app for my Android mobile. I'm trying to use MOTODev Studio (Which extends eclipse). I've not developed in Java before so it's a bit of a learning curve anyway. I'm fairly confident I'll be able to work out the important bits but I'm in a new IDE in a new language developing for a new platform. As I'm new to Java, I was hoping to be able to rely on auto-code generation, intellisense, etc. I'm starting to think this was either very optimistic or I'm using eclipse very poorly. For example, I know I need to override the OnClickListener() event but am unsure of the exact syntax. In VS, I'd just start typing Override in a class and up would pop intellisense with everything I can override and the appropriate signature, however, in eclipse none of the intellisense options seem to apply when I type public voidor @Override. Is this because I'm doing something wrong/is eclipse intellisense incomplete not very good? In VS there's a bar at the top of the code page which lists objects in the file on the left and methods of the current object on the right. Does eclipse have an equivalent? If so, where?

Android :: How Licensing Work In Transitioning From Free App To Paid?

Feb 11, 2009

Here's the scenario: The app is on the market for free. The publisher then decides to make it a pay app and changes the status. I'm assuming you can just do that, but my questions are:
1) Will the publishing console require us to upload a new version if it is to be a pay app, or can we just change it on-the-fly? 2) If we can change it on-the-fly, how will that affect users that have downloaded the free version? Do they get the license to the paid one as well (so they can delete but reinstall the app for free, get updates, etc?) I've finished a game but I've been just waiting for the paid apps to come on line before publishing it. I'm now thinking that I wouldn't mind a 1 week free period before going paid but something felt like the users who download it for free would never have to pay even after I change it to paid and add some sort of desirable update that makes them want to download the new version (and pay then to get it if they have to).

HTC EVO 4G :: Way To Transfer Contacts From Palm Pre To Phone?

May 18, 2010

I just pre-ordered the EVO yesterday. Since this is at Radio Shack, I am assuming that they won't be able to transfer the contacts from me pre to the EVO. Is this correct? I decided to go ahead and fix all my contacts on gmail anyway just in case. This gives me something to do while waiting for my EVO.... Will the Evo import all my contacts when I log into my gmail account and set it as my main sync account? What I am doing is this:
1. I installed the 'contacts to email' patch using preware and exported all my contacts as a vcard file. This is probably a good idea anyway. I don't completely trust "cloud" storage.
2. I sent myself the email and then imported this vcard file into gmail contacts. This resulted in about 350 contacts in gmail. I'm now working through them doing edits and combining duplicates. Is this the best way to prepare my contacts for the EVO?

Android :: Importing Palm Memos?

Nov 19, 2009

I've been largely pleased with the Droid after about 12 years using Palm devices. The exception is the inability to easily, quickly import the 550+ Memos I've authored over the years. Plenty of apps will import one huge memo, but none will import a csv file of ALL the memos. This includes OI Note. Does anyone have any experience successfully importing such a large number of memos without having to extensively edit? Or ideally, edit at all?

3. Alarms: 4 configurable alarms that can be set to repeat on a day or days selected. (Great to remind me to watch certain shows).

4. Count-down timer.

I hope someone can point me to an app that has all these features or hopefully a developer can develop a similar app for Android.Click the link to view the big clock app from palm (Warning) it's a very old app and shows it's age: bigclock

Android :: Best Palm Desktop Memo Replacement

Jun 10, 2010

I'm transitioning my PIM's from my Palm TX to a shiny, new Evo. Big jump I know. My major concern was how to manage the hundreds of memos I had accumulated over the years. I loved the simplicity of the Palm desktop, offline access, and easy syncing but was having trouble finding a good alternative on android even after reading through many forums. I stumbled onto B-folders which seems to work great as a Palm desktop memo replacement.B-folders has a desktop component that is similar to the Palm desktop in its simplicity and ease of use. It's actually cleaner than the example they have on their website. The B-folders app is also nice and clean. Porting hundreds of memos in multiple different categories was actually very easy. Here's how I did it:
1)On the Palm desktop within a category, select all memos.
2)Export as a csv file. When it asks to specify export fields, only check "Memo".
3)On the B-folders desktop, import as a generic csv file.
4)A new folder called "Imported Data" will be created. Right click on it to edit the name.
5)Repeat for all your memo categories.
6)Sync with your app and you're done! You'll have all your memos on your desktop and phone and can sync them anytime. I used wifi to sync.
There is a 30 day trial after which it costs $30. I'm not one to usually pay for apps but this one might be worth it. Hopefully this helps all those die-hard PalmOS users left out there!

Android :: Palm Users - What Calendar And ToDo App

May 4, 2010

I've used Palm phones for the last 10 years and I'm making the switch to Android soon. The Palm program I use the most (and rely on daily) is DateBk (by Pimlico). I've used DateBk for the last 4 years and love it.

One big reason I'm moving to an Android phone is to push all I can into the "Cloud." That way I can have everywhere access to my information and schedule and it's automatically backed up. So I really don't want to buy DateBk (even if it comes to Android) because it's not really a "Cloud" friendly program.

Is Google Calendar coupled with the free "Remember the Milk" app (or maybe it's $10 for Android users) a good replacement for DateBk?
