HTC Hero :: MicroSD Card Can Enhance Performance Of Phone / How?
Oct 10, 2009
I was reading a while back someone's topic about if a microSD card can enhance the performance of HTC Hero. I'd love to look it up but I cant, this site isn't going well lately, and I'd have to reload each page 20times to get to actual topic.

I have seen some threads and articles on a few sites talking about the advantages of a better than stock mSD card for the Hero having a drastic effect on its performance. I have see others stating that a Class 4 or even Class 6 card on the Euro HTC Hero has improved performance by 400%. Now while I know "400%" is a little out there and even sounds exaggerated, I am curious what this group of people has seen or heard. Does a better MicroSD card improve overall performance?

My experience is that loading websites in a WebView is much slower than performing the same actions in the Android Web Browser. I can see that all files have been loaded in my Apache log, it will take a few seconds until the page is displayed in the WebView control, however. Opening the same page in the native Web browser will result in an immediate display. It seems that rendering is somehow crippled.Which browser settings do we have to apply in order to achieve the same performance as loading the page in the native web browser?

I'm looking to buy a slightly bigger card for my hero, especially since apps2sd has stolen some of the space on my card now. This is the card I was thinking of going with, Play.com (UK) - Mobile - Free Delivery But since I've never purchased anything like this before, just wanted to check this is the right thing. It's listed as 'Micro SDHC Plus', but I take it that's just marketing spiel for plain old Micro SD rather than a different type of card?

I did a search and couldn't find anything on this.I am still using the stock 2GB microSD card, and looking to root. Can I root with my current card (which has 650MB-ish available), and after rooting just purchase a new card and swap it out. Or would it be more advantageous to purchase the new SD card prior to rooting?

I went and bought a new 8gb microsd card today, tired of not having enough music to get me through the day. Now, when I connect via USB, I get the normal options to mount and everything. When I choose to mount, the notification shows the option to turn off USB storage, but then just goes to preparing SD card and then I have the option to mount again. I thought that maybe it was the card, but now even with my original card, the same exact thing happens. The phone will read both cards, and both cards can be read in the computer. I also reformatted the 8gb, with the same result. Obviously I need to try another computer, but just curious if anyone has any thoughts. I have seen some people with other issues close to this, but not seeming to find the same issue occurring. btw, my phone is stock.

I have my phone coming tomorrow. I have done some research and I have downloaded the latest HTC sync and drivers for my windows 7. I have downloaded a few utilities as well. Anything in particular that I need to do to with the phone or any applications that have to be installed first? Also what file format does it use on the microSD card? Is it a linux format?

I am considering getting an upgrade on my MicroSD. But not sure which class to buy.
How does higher MicroSD HC speed of class 4 and 6 helps with Xperia X10 performance?
Any changes based on your experience?
Considering Xperia X10 processor Input and Output MB/s VS. Class 2 (2MB/s), Class 4 (4MB/s), Class (6MB/s)

I'm considering the possibility of selling my Behold 2 phone and getting something a little better supported (anything HTC, for example). I know how to flash the ROM back to the Stock, but, how do I re-format/prepare my MicroSD card in the phone back to it's factory settings?
And is there anything else that anyone thinks I will need to do in preparation for selling it?

I'm hoping to get a little insight here from the members of the community that have devices that are not rooted, or from members that have experience prior to their rooting. Before I go into my questioning, I do want to preface this by stating that I have considered rooting my phone in the past, and have even tried (but failed) using the PreKitchen. Since then, I have made a definite decision that I will not be rooting my device. I have done TONS of research and reading on the topic, have asked and have had answered a lot of questions, and I've just decided that I do not want to do it. Yes, I understand the pros of doing it, I just choose not to. That being said, I would respectfully ask that those who take the time to respond to this post, please don't suggest rooting.
Ok, so I've owned the Hero since October, and for the most part, it has performed only marginally. The quirks, odditys and under performance issues I have experienced are nothing different from what has been talked about on this board, or others. Some issues, however, have been persistently bad, even after the "typical" troubleshooting methods have been used. Additionally, some of the things I've seen my device do haven't been talked about, or at least not in great detail, by many people. Some of the issues that I am experiencing, I am hoping that 2.1 will cure, however, I've come to a breaking point where I don't want to wait it out for the upgrade to finally release, only to find out that it didn't help. I've talked to Sprint Advanced Tech Support a few times and they seem to believe that it's a faulty device. Whether or not that is their response because they are stumped, or if the device actually IS faulty is what I'm hoping to figure out. They have agreed to send a replacement device to me, so I'm trying to get a feel for what to expect. Below are some of the issues I'm experiencing:
1. Wifi will not stay connected 85% of the time, despite a strong signal.
2. Apps take quite a bit of time to respond. The phone, however, does not seem to lag all that much. Screens respond pretty quickly and swiping is pretty smooth. Apps just take quite a bit of time to open/respond, even if still in "running" mode in the background.
3. Browser and other data requesting apps take quite a bit of time to get data, despite a strong EVDO signal or strong Wifi signal.
4. The phone's antenna seems to be weak. I can barely get a signal in my office (a one story building, sitting close to a window) and I'm in a heavily populated city. I've never had a hard time getting any less than 3 bars on any other Sprint phone in this location. Additionally, in areas where reception should be strong, I've found my phone switching between 1x and EVDO for data, and Roaming for voice.
There are other miscellaneous issues as well. I also want to stress that all of the typical troubleshooting methods have been done. I hard reset the phone last week and cleaned house, and am still seeing these issues. Prior to hard resetting, I had around 25-30 MB of free space on the phone. After the hard reset, I'm around 75 MB of free space, so that doesn't seem to be an issue. Text messages are cleared off the phone as they come in and program caches are cleared out daily. As for the signal issues, that's something I can't figure out, and neither can Sprint Tech Support, which is why I'm getting the replacement. My questions to the community are these:
1. I know that some of the issues I have listed are common among Hero users, however, does troubleshooting (clearing caches, texts, etc) solve the issues, or do they persist?
2. Has anyone had signal/data speed issues?
3. For people who have had replacement devices for issues similar to these, did the new device work better, or is this just a function of the device? One of the main reasons I ask these questions is because if this is going to continue to be an issue from device to device, there is no need to waste time continually swapping phones. I think at that point, I'll just have to wait for 2.1, hope it resolves the issues, and if not, cross that bridge at that time. I've expressed concern to the Sprint reps about receiving a refurb device. They had stated that it isn't up to them what gets shipped, however, they did advise that if a refurb was shipped, to send it back and go to a repair center to return it (in hopes that they have new phones on hand). I'm truly hoping that this is an issue with my device and not the Hero itself.

I formatted my card per Radio Shacks instructions but in hindsight I should have checked to see what came preinstalled first. I am fairly sure that the HTC Sync installation file was on there, but I think there was some music as the music widget had a song on it but after the format there wasn't anything.

I'm looking to get a microSD card for my EVO by the 4th and I want to know what I should go for. I know Class 6 is the fastest, so that's what I thought I wanted to get and I wanted to get a 16gb but it looks like it's $80 on Amazon. Now, that's damn expensive for 16gb of storage and I'm not used to buying storage for my phone since I've had an iPhone. Is it worth it to drop to a lower storage capacity or a lower speed? How much of a difference does the transfer speed make on the phone? Does it hinder the speed of the phone at all? Also, for those lucky bastards that got the HTC EVO ahead of time, what kind of card comes with it?

With the problems I've been hearing about the SD card that's included with the EVO, I've been in a quandary over what to do: I have an 8GB Class 6 MicroSD Card that I believe trumps the included Class 2 card that comes with the EVO, so I expect I will move everything over to that card....which begs the following - I've copied over all the photos, videos, documents, and music from my card to my PC. Should I just reformat the SD card in the device, and then copy these files over? Could I just use the SD card as I have it currently set up (I have it in my Hero at this point, running 2.1). Or should I copy the contents of the new card to my PC, add the files from my old card to that, reformat my Class 6 card, and then copy the files from the PC to this card?

Just in case anyone wants to try this / if it has happened to anyone else. I didn't have a pre order for the Incredible but when I went in to exchange my current 10 day old phone for one the manager went to transfer the contacts over and apparently their machine cannot transfer anything to the internal Incredible memory. I received a free 2gb memory card to make up for it ($24.99 savings woot).

You might have seen this around the forums or other places: 32GB MicroSD. Its the 32GB MicroSD that Verizon is selling for $99 with FREE overnight shipping for their phones. You can buy it without having anything with Verizon, though.
I now have mine installed in my Captivate and the thing is great. I have 29GB of Music/Videos/Pictures loaded up on it and playing back ANYTHING on my phone is fast and doesn't stutter. I know I had some questions about this so I just wanted to post that yes, you CAN enjoy 48GB of space on a Captivate without worrying about Class size speed issues, worrying about the card being fake, etc. Well worth the 100 bucks. The money you can save from Wirefly/Amazon/Walmart etc can easily pay for this.

Can someone please tell me how to install apps directly onto the microSD card? Even brand new the HTC Desire seems to only have 100MB to download and install applications on so I find it much more sense being able to store and install them on a 32GB microSD card. My internal memory is full now and I barely have any apps installed on it yet have about 900 applications I can install so I at least want to put more on!

I'd like to start collecting MicroSD card benchmarks. If you have bought a MicroSD card for use in your Captivate, please help out.
To test:
Install the following:
SD Card Speed Tester - Android app on AppBrain
Run it several times to make sure you don't get a fluke low number (like from momentary activity). If your phone is idle, you should get consistent results.
Then, please post to this thread with the following:
Card brand/model
Capacity
"Class" rating
Write speed (MB/s)
Read speed (MB/s)
Although it's not made obvious, the author has updated this app so that on Galaxy S phones it appends sd/ to the test path in order to test the external card (if present).
