HTC Hero :: Official Update Vs MonDaCo Custom ROM
Sep 21, 2009I have a fairly new HTC Hero.Came across this forum a few days ago, hoping to learn a few tricks about the android phone.I am currently stuck as to whether root my phone and load the custom ROM, or get the official update.I have gone through the forum and read that many people have been getting errors regarding the update.My phone is purchased from Orange, but I have no idea of how to tell if it is branded or not.There is no Orange stickers at the back of my phone or any orange logo on my home page.So if I was to do the official update, do I use the standard one or the Orange one?

Sep 23, 2010I use Baked Snack 1.7 and I tried the deodexed version of the OTA but noticed no change. Infact I found the OTA would stutter sometimes when scrolling. Also compared to CM6 and Neterchy kernel 4.1.9.1 I don't see it being same or better besides it being official. I know pretty soon the devs will have their own version but for now I don't see a reason to update.

Aug 27, 2010I installed the latest version of fresh last week and im loving it... My battery life is amazing now. I was just wondering if there is a big difference in performance between Fresh with the stock kernel & fresh with a custom. Did i half-ass it by only installing the new rom with no kernel? what about that set cpu app that people were using with unrevocked when the evo came out... Anyone using that still with their custom roms or is it unnecessary?

Jan 26, 2010OK so this was in regards to me talking to my buddy about trying to get Google Goggles to work on my 1.5 Hero since it already works on his 1.6 MyTouch.I know that the Roms are all different but one thing I just can't get.What is the technical difference between a 2.1 ROM on a Hero with 1.5, and a 2.1 ROM on a Hero with 2.1?I know the ROMs now are based on 1.5 themselves so they run well on the Hero, but they are messing with 2.1 ROMs, and I'm not sure what that means when it's "based" (or is it based, I don't get that part) on a 1.5 OS on the Hero.I apologize for not being able to word this well, hopefully you guys understand it.The conclusion obviously would also be if someone makes a 1.6 ROM then that should either technically run Google Goggles (just like running apps2sd), or since it's based on our Hero's 1.5, is this not correct?

Apr 17, 2010I've seen a few threads from people having issues with the latest orange rom (2.73.61.66) but have yet to find anyone with the issue i'm having.
Basically, i keep getting an error message saying something like:
"this process has stopped unexpectedly"
giving the only option to force close. When it is force closed the same message pops up again. and again. and again. The only way to stop it is to either battle against the message and hope you can hit the power down button, or to pop the battery.
Sometimes it throws up other messages similar to the above one but for specific applications (ie sense, google talk..whatever..) but these never come alone, they always bring the original force close message.
Anyway, i've been onto orange and, tho i'm very pissed off, they have been good. they set me a replacement handset in less than 24 hrs (as they thought it might be a screen malfunction) which i was buzzing over until i got the same message! gutted. After talking to their tech support he suggested a hard reset followed by not adding any apps to the phone, so now i have a stock hero with stock apps and i'm waiting to see if i get a similar message...but in the mean time does anyone know of any possible conflicting applications? here is a list of the market apps i have used:
"Audio manager widget"
"beebplayer"
"Battery widget"
"Replica island"
"gStrings guitar tuner"
"Hoccer"
"Google sky map"
"Astro file manager"
"TV guide free uk"
"Ringdroid"
"Free advanced task manager"
It seems weird to me that i had no issues what so ever before upgrading the rom.
HTC Hero :: Going From VillainROM To Official 2.1
Jul 6, 2010A while ago, I installed VillainROM in my HTC Hero because I wanted to try it out. Now I hear the official 2.1 has been released and since my phone is being a little buggy lately, I want to install the official one. "Off Course" I don't remember how I did it and don't know how to do the procedure.
1. Is there an official ROM for Belgium, I can download?
2. How do I do this (I know I did all the official steps while upgrading to VillainROM.

I used to have the gel case which was great but didn't protect the screen and I didn't want to quick a protector onto my phone. The beauty of the pouch is that is allows you to have the beautiful touch and feel of the phone but able to keep it well protected as well.

HTC Hero :: ROM Suitable For Rooting Over Official 2.1?
Oct 3, 2010I currently have an official orange HTC Hero running on official 2.1. No problems, I actually like it a lot but browsing this sections of the forums, I've seen that people have taken advantage of rooting so. Are there any ROMs that you would pick over the official 2.1 that don't:
Eat battery life
Cause glitches(that are very noticeable)
And can:
be updated to directly from official 2.1
If you have any guides or info or links that are in English, I'd appreciate it if you could show them to me. But the most important thing is whether it's worth it.
Sprint HTC Hero :: Official 2.1 RUU - Name Unchanged
Jun 4, 2010It looks like even though 2.1 was rooted for the Hero, Sprint has now made a patch. Not only is there an OTA update that breaks the root, but apparently Sprint is pulling a sneaky one. They went and updated the RUU on the download page, but did not change the name of it. The old RUU for 2.1 was version 2.27.651.5. When downloaded the new RUU from Sprint is 2.27.651.6, which root is patched.

Sep 23, 2009I am getting calls going straight to voicemail with no missed calls on my phone, when I have full signal, so orange have (after a lot of calls) agreed to terminate my contract. I have to return my phone (shame I could not keep it for free!) and have rooted my phone, and installed the modaco ROM.
I want to return it with an orange ROM, and was wondering if I can just install the updated orange ROM on my phone over the top of the modaco, and has anyone done this successfully? From reading around I am assuming that this would hide the fact that I have ever rooted or installed a custom ROM, as I want to be back on warranty?

Jun 2, 2010Just asking because a buddy of mine backed up all his stuff before he did the sprint official. He restored it after the update and had nothing but problems. Problems like the ones most of you on the forum are describing. After a hard reset and not restoring his backups he has no problems.

I'm thinking about getting a replacement cover but I've been told that the only ones available immediately are "urban brown covers" which I presume to be mocha covers. I've yet to see a mocha hero (other than in pics online) so I don't know if my hero will look weird with a mocha battery case. Is the color difference very obvious?

May 27, 2010Now that we are on 2.1, Juice Defender works on our phones. I have been running it for a couple days, and I think it is helping. Still need to do some better calculations. Once loaded, I did shut off Power Manager, as I think they conflict on some of the settings. Anyhow, has anyone else loaded it on the official 2.1 release? What's your experience?
