Android :: Main Differences Between Versions Of OS?
Dec 7, 2009Is there a basic guide to the main differences between versions of the Android OS?I am using a 1.6 Magic, am buying a 1.5 T-Mobile Pulse for my son and looking at a 1.6 Hero for myself early next year. I wanted to see what the differences were between 1.5 -> 1.6 -> 2.0.I assume that I have to wait for network operators to provide updated operating systems? Can the Pulse be upgraded at all? Is the Hero getting/got version 2.0?

Jun 28, 2010I've had this Eris since January and was surprised when I began reading in the Eris forums about various issues, ongoing bugs and problems with signal reception, etc.Mine exhibited nothing other than solid, reliable behavior on 1.5 and again after the OTA came to our devices.After rooting, that same reliability and concrete behavior continues, with one exception: on my now favorite ROM, XTR 2.1.1, the signal quality has dropped to near nothing, even to the point of truly nothing; zero bars and 1g rather than my usual 3g and two or three sometimes 4 bars.Recovering to Senseable 3.1 the signal quality returns to normal.Has anybody else seen any differences from ROM to ROM wrt signal strength?

and i've been trying to root this so i can use other application and wifi tether however everytime i tried i always get this error " MAIN FOLDER IS OLDER , MAIN UPDATE FAIL!"
I used unrevoked - does not work then i restore to factory setting THEN i tried simpleroot get message Main Folder is older, main update fail!. I also have tried to do Restart the PHONE and press the power button and hold the volume button up (but i have upload the PC36IMG.ZIP before i reboot) THIS does not work either get same message.
IF anyone can help me with this root and PM me your PAYPAL i willing to pay $10 to give me detail instruction (step by step how to get this root)
After rooter i need to know if possible to update somehow to get my FLASH working or it have to be update to droid 2.2 (if i update to 2.2 after rooted, will it lose all my rooted previously assuming its already successfully rooted)

The question I have is if you can root the eris if its already been upgraded to 2.1 and if you can how in depth is it. Oct 25, 2010I've been using Nonsensikal since rooting, and I guess I'll need to find a new ROM. Anyone have any suggestions for a good Froyo ROM(non-sense)? I tried Tazz and Kaosfroyo a while back but they seemed a little rough, have they improved enough?
Also is anyone having trouble with their Nonsensikal ROM? My phone has been a complete dog today, it's like it's stock again. I haven't upgraded to 10.0 but am in the process right now.
Android :: Version Differences
Apr 7, 2010Basically, I am looking at two phones right now. The Nexus One and the HTC Incredible and I like both, the question I have is that is there a difference in the ability to root/rom these phones? I saw a few posts of people saying the Incredible would have a locked /system folder that would not allow the sort of modding freedom the Nexus One would provide. Is this true or would the phones be equally moddable (so I could remove Sense UI and play around with Cyanogen and other goodies)?

May 21, 2010I was lucky enough to find an evo from the google i/o convention for 450 plus 20 bucks for overnight shipping on ebay. I had to pay full price any ways at BB or RS due to getting palm pre in december (I cant wait to destory this horrible hardware) so it will be cheaper than the 450 plus tax i would have paid on june 4th. however will there be any differences between this version and the ones that go on sale June 4th?

Oct 27, 2010Just picked my wife up a new Ally yesterday,and it came with software version VS740ZV8. Mine recieved the OTA update a few weeks back to the VS740ZVB version. I noticed that her phone does NOT have the City ID and other Verizon bloatware that mine did after the ZVB update. Is this a version that was right before the OTA update? I did notice that is has MUCH more memory free, and seems to be really responsive compared to the way mine was when I first got it. I'm gonna give it a week or two before I root it and flash the new JIT kernel on it incase there are any problems, but wonder if I should allow an OTA update before then and remove the offensive software if this is indeed the version that was before the ZVB update.

May 7, 2010If I use my HTC Desire for Google Navigation in the car, with the phone plugged into a USB power adaptor for the cigarette lighter socket with the cable that was supplied with the phone, the battery still runs down.A dialogue pops up when the battery is getting low saying words to the effect that the phone is using more power than is coming in via the charging cable.I notice that the phone distinguishes between being charged on AC and being charged by USB. In Settings->About Phone->Battery it says, "Charging (USB)" or "Charging (AC)". I believe that charging from a PC USB socket is limited to <500ma by the USB spec. I guess the phone knows that it can draw more current when connected to the AC charger.The supplied AC charger must have some way to tell the phone that it is connected. Perhaps it communicates with the phone via the USB data lines, or something simpler like the data lines being shorted together?The USB power adaptor I have in my car can source 1A. If I can work out how to convince the phone to switch to "Charging (AC)" mode then perhaps it can do Google Navigation and charge the battery at the same time?

Aug 24, 2010I've come to the conclusion that I really don't like the default keyboard included with the kaosfroyo rom. As cool as it looks, its just bad at correcting mistakes. The htc keyboard was great once you calibrated it, and seemed to remember certain words that you use often to suggest them over other choices. Is it possible to install the HTC keyboard on this rom? Are they any other keyboards worth trying?

Sep 5, 2010The one thing I just couldn't get to work was Navigation in Froyo ROMs. It would always get stuck at "Searching for GPS." Well on xda, a fellow member told me to flash the new CFS kernal from Conap ) So this is what I did to finally get the Navigation to work!
1. Reboot into recovery and make a Nandroid backup just in case.
2. Wipe Dalvik cache
3. Flash new CFS kernal [GPL]2.6.29.6 CFS Kernel 9/4/10 - xda-developers(There is also a BFS kernal which is only if you want high benchmarks, CFS is for overall stability)
4. Once rebooted, clear the data of Maps in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications
5. Open up Maps and put in directions to an address, then click Navigate.
6. Once Navigation is up and running, it will get stuck at "Searching for GPS." Make a sandwich, wash dishes, etc.
7. Sooner or later it will get pass the "Searching for GPS" stage. (It took 15 minutes for me)
8. Navigation should be working instantly now, back out of Navigation, try a new address, and Navigation should instantly work without having to go through "Searching for GPS."
HTC Eris :: Wi-Fi Scanning Froyo
Nov 24, 2010I've been running xtrSense and xtrRom for months with great results.
I decided to try a Froyo based Rom and my first two attempts (FroShedYo.V6 and Nonsensikal v13.2) both had the same WiFi issue.
I can't connect or even detect my wireless network. I'm 5 feet away from the AP which had great connectivity with the xtr Roms.
Settings..show Wi-Fi scanning continously.
Reboot...cycled airplane mode... nothing.
Even rewiped and reflashed.
Everything else appears to be working great.

Jun 8, 2009I find that the UI "Enable GPS satellites" is used to enable receiving GPS data, but not to start GPS. Which UI is used to start GPS? I am not clearly understand why android to designed GPS so. If GPS is not started, then you can't use "Enable GPS satellites" to receive any data and it is useless. I think that if the UI "Enable GPS satellites" is used to start GPS and also run the GPS thread is better? What is the trigger to start GPS?

Speed Test shows a 10:1 difference.When going to a different location such as at a certain restaurant, I have full 3G reception on my phone but my wife's phone only has 2 bars for 3G.What would be the technical explanation for this phenomenon?

There is a CELB 1.9 rom (aka erislightning bolt froyo) that has WORKING cam...the gallery still goes funky when you try to view sideways but the cam DOES indeed have a working preview!
