HTC Eris :: Fast And Functional Phone

Jun 26, 2010

I have been reading a lot about roms for the eris the past few days. my girlfriend has been getting frustrated with her eris's lag and how much it has seemed to slow down over the course of having it. I was just wondering what would be a stable, fast rom to make her phone snappy and her happy? I don't have any root experience yet so I'm looking for a solid out of the box rom to start with. All i would want is it to be fast and functional (so she doesn't get mad at me for messing up her phone). I've read about EE and WW. I read that EE isnt' very fast, would WW be a good choice, or is there a simpe fast one that I haven't read about yet?

HTC Droid Eris : Functional Bluetooth Keyboards / Failed Experiment

May 1, 2010

I recently tried pairing the Freedom Pro bluetooth keyboard with an Eris, it's what brought me to these forums; subsequent searches didn't show conclusive answers so I thought I would share some trial and error:

-They don't pair. (Edit, 5/13/10: They might pair, scroll to bottom for updated info)

As of the date of this posting, the Eris (Both Android 1.5 and the leaked 2.1, v3) will not connect to the device using: The manufacturer's Android driver, the Keypro bluetooth driver, or the BlueInput Android driver.I've read where other Android phones have had some success with the keyboard through whatever available drivers, the Eris does not share this success. It executes to the manufacturer's directions until the "connect" step is available; a connection never occurs although the device is recognized.I could be wrong. There could be a missed and critical step to the process, but then, it wasn't listed in any available instructions. My impression, confirmed by a very few scattered comments elsewhere on the internet: It doesn't work.

1. Can anyone suggest a keyboard proven to pair with the Eris? Are there any usable arrangements for full keyboards/external keyboards known to work with this phone?

2. Has anyone else attempted to use this keyboard with an Eris or other device? Confirm my disappointment or blatant omissions?

HTC Eris :: Fast Boot Flashing Recovery

Mar 25, 2010

I've got the rooted 2.1, easy. I've got all the java and adk and what not I got the flash_image and recovery.img. The command prompts all work fine till the last command, (I've tried 2 different chain of commands both work until a certain point).

adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
adb push recovery.img /sdcard
adb push flash_image /system/bin
adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
(After this one it says it cannot find flash recovery or image, cant exactly remember.)

- Open the Terminal and copy and paste the following commands with the phone connected to your computer.
- adb shell [hit enter]
- su [hit enter]
- flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-eris-v1.6.2.img (once again not found but I believe I followed correctly) this the end of commands the first half worked fine.

HTC Droid Eris :: Battery Draining Insanely Fast

Apr 3, 2010

Ok - so I took the plunge today and went to the 2.1 leak...installed perfectly thanks to Matlock's guide - LOVE 2.1 - it's awesome!Just have a ONE MAJOR PROB (and a minor one) - my battery is literally draining before my eyes!It will be at 80% and I will load the weather and maybe respond to a text and it will drop to 79%. Then if I just flip screen to screen - another 1% gone in less than 15 secs!!I have searched through the forums but haven't seen if there is a 'fix"I have build 2.26.60534 CL140744 - that's the latest, correct? My Minor issue is signal strength - I use to have 3-4 bars constant and now am lucky if I get 2 - again saw others had the same prob but didn't know if there was a fix besides the *228/2 -I have powered off - taken battery out - that gave it about 10% more juice but still declines rapidly as before.REALLY NEED SOME HELP ON THIS TO PROVE TO MY WIFE I AM NOT A TOTAL IDIOT (please keep those comments to minimum - at least til my problem is fixed) AS "SHE WARNED ME"

HTC Droid Eris :: Time Widget Too Fast / Slow By 1 Hr / How To Fix?

Dec 10, 2009

I live in Glendale, Arizona. My clock widget is too fast or too slow by 1 hr. I went ot the VZW Store and they told me it is a glitch with the Eris software. It is registering as Glendale, California making it 1 hour behind and when it is an hour ahead it registering the next town over which is Peoria, but the phone thinks it is Peoria, Illinois. I am a little turned off because if the GPS is turned on this problem should not occur. When I try an set the time to my home location instead of current location, it does not allow me to click it.

HTC Droid Eris :: Keyboard Doesn't Work With Fast Typing

Jun 13, 2010

I text. A lot. It's very irritating when the keyboard on the Eris can't keep up with how fast I type. I'll be finished with my message, and the last few words take 1-3 seconds to show up, which is fine I suppose. However, when I make some errors, the auto-correct feature doesn't work because apparently my typing speed is too quick for it.

Everything works fine when I type slowly, but that's annoying too.

I barely have any apps besides the stock ones. In running services I only have the calendar, Google Voice, Touch Input, and BatteryTime running. I don't use any app killer, I have animations and haptic feedback turned off. I don't know what else I can do to speed this phone up.

This problem, the lag in switching from portrait to landscape, and the lag with calls is really making me want to sell my Eris and purchase the Incredible, or I may wait until the "Moto Droid X" releases in July....or is that just a rumor?

HTC Droid Eris :: Tips To Keep Droid Eris Running Fast

Ive noticed now, that after about a week with my Droid Eris, although a love it, it seems to be running much slower than when I bought it. I just created this thread for people to add anything that might help the Eris run as quickly as possible.

1. power phone completely off every couple of days.
2. advanced task manager seems to help
3. clear browser cache!!! - this helped me immensely. Settings>Applications>Manage Apps> then find your browser and clear the cache. do this with other large apps.

Android :: Automated Functional Testing

Jul 9, 2009

Automated Functional Testing..First of all let me make you all aware that I'm a developer and what you are going to read further is a developer's account, so it may sound to you like a layman tester. But what I'm going to share is something which has been very helpful to me to 'functionally' test the web application our team has been building and I thought this may help you as well. So even if you are a tester, try to think the way developer's think for some time, I'm sure this would be useful to you too. Before I go ahead, I think we all understand that Functional Testing is testing the functionality of our application which means you'd probably be going through a login using some credentials, clicking some links, verifying some outputs - in simplest terms. Now just give it a thought that if you can automate these i.e. invest some time for once and then while you are sipping a cup of coffee, someone is testing what you coded. Change your code 10 times and run your test 10 times to ensure nothing breaks, so easy. Not just this if you have continuous integration server setup which runs your tests, you'd come to know immediately if and when someone else broke your code. Believe me ones who have used it, feel it is fantastic.

There are a variety of tools available for this over internet each with pros/cons but I'm going to share some info here about one which I liked very much and have been using for a while now. I'd also share why I preferred it over others.Ok, no longer prolonging the suspense the tool I'm talking about is called Canoo WebTest (webtest.canoo.com) which is a free Open Source tool for automated testing of web applications in a very effective way. The primary reason why I liked it is that it is FAST; very fast ... most of the test cases that I've written are executed in less than a minute and that too over remote applications deployed on servers on the other side of globe. Second reason for liking it so much is the ease of writing; very quickly you can build up your tests. Though they have released a WebTest recorder plug-in which when installed in Mozilla Firefox can record the script for you, but believe me the more you start writing there test cases, the less reliant you will become on the recorder. Third thing is these tests do not use a browser so that completely eliminated browser-specific issues which some tools are plagued with.

Android :: Google Navigator - Voice Not Functional

May 17, 2010

I have a Droid Eris running OTA 2.1. I just tried using Google Navigator for the first time this morning. When I ran it it led me to install the text to speech app. Unfortunately, I had my SD card mounted (for music in my car) at the time and the install failed. I dropped out, un-mounted the card, manually installed the app, and re-started Google Nav. I have no sound in it at all now. It is not muted, and the nav volume is at max. I have heard it work on my wife's phone. The nav software was my main reason for getting an Android phone. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I going to have to factory reset?

Android :: Good / Nice Looking Functional SMS Widget?

Dec 16, 2009

I'm looking for a nice looking, functional SMS widget. I'm currently using the one from Beautiful Widgets, but as much as I like the other widgets in that package, I think the SMS one is painfully ugly and doesn't fit with anything else on my home screen. I know I could have Handcent do popup notifications, but I would prefer to have a widget like the one I currently use that sits on the home screen.

Something skinnable would be preferable, but if nothing like that exists, then perhaps a simple, minimalistic or universal design.

Anybody know of anything that I might like? I'm willing to pay for a good one, it doesn't have to be a freebie.

Samsung Captivate :: Phone Getting Hot / Battery Draining Fast

Nov 18, 2010

Since I got my Captivate just a couple of weeks after it hit the market, I experienced really good battery life. I could plug the charger in at 6:00 when I get up, take it off the charger at 7:30 when I leave for work, and make it til the next morning most days.A couple of weeks ago, I left for work with a full charge, and around 11:00 I took out my phone to test WiFi coverage for some new access points we had installed in the office. The phone felt very warm, and the battery indicator was yellow. For the next couple of days it went like this. I had a spare Samsung battery from when AT&T sent us a new one for my wife's Captivate when she was having random shutdown issues, so I swapped batteries. Things were fine for 10-11 days. Then suddenly last evening about 7:30, when I went to look something up online with my phone, it was very warm again, and the battery indicator was red. Had to put it on the car charger when I left church. When I got home, I put it on the charger all night. By midday today, it was in the yellow, and it finally died about an hour ago. again the handset felt very warm. I don't have a spare USB cable here at work, so will have to wait to get home to charge it. Anything particular I should look for on the phone (running apps, etc.)? Or do I just need to go ahead and place a call to AT&T support?

I know its "slower charge" because the computer also allows data transfer and mounting of the sd card, but maybe theres a possible way to shut that off? Also, would a double USB port cord that are used for external hard drives improve charge time at all? Two normal sized USB coming from computer to the miniUSB port on hero.

If you want to run your phone twice as fast without rooting, just install PandaHome [free] from the Market. It takes the phone from being utterly dead to very usable. I read there is another home replacement but its not free like pandahome. I like the behold 2 but I'm not sure why samsung decided to destroy a good thing. This could have been a very successful model had they just left the OS alone and not included bloat software.

HTC Incredible :: Battery Draining Really Fast - Cell Standby And Phone Idle At 36% Each

Aug 6, 2010

Just yesterday my phone was getting more than 14+ hours of battery. Now it's draining really quickly even when I'm not using it (I left it on while I was asleep). It's not facebook because I already downloading the fix and rebooted. My "time without signal" is 0% so I don't think that's the problem. I did download Quickpedia yesterday but a quick search tells me that's not the problem either.

The only other thing I did differently was switch from ADW to LauncherPro yesterday, but if that was draining the battery wouldn't it be under Android System and not standby or idle? Regardless, I switched back to ADW just to see if that works

Motorola Droid : Phone Running Warm When Multiple Accounts Were Connected - Battery Drained Fast

Aug 31, 2010

I had been using IMEasy for its multiple-account capability, I found my phone running warm when multiple accounts were connected though, and the battery drained fast; down to 70% in 3 hours in a poor signal area. I thought it was the poor signal. Installed Trillian yesterday, it's connected to 3 IM accounts and after 5 hours I'm only down to 90%, in the same area. I've been a happy Trillian user on the PC, I already had an Astra account from that so setup was SIMPLE. I HIGHLY suggest this app, though it's still in Beta and it IS missing a couple options I would like they're not critical issues to me, and I'm sure they'll fix them.

Beta is available from their site, Trillian - IM, Astra, Windows Live, Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, MySpace, AIM, Email, and more!

I know this sounds like an ad but I'm just a happy customer.

The 2 missing items (maybe one really) are the ability to set the notification tone in the app and the ability to change the notification LED color in the app.

Nothing happens after that.I've been told to exit out of the application under test in the emulator in order to run the test again. Unfortunately the emulator doesn't have the app pulled up (it's in the normal "locked" position and when unlocked brings up the home screen) and even if I do pull it up then exit, it doesn't seem to let me run my tests again. All the example videos and tutorials all stop at the first run of a test. I have yet to see anyone anywhere run a test a second time!

Android :: Android Functional Testing - Testing Multiple Activities

Apr 16, 2009

I've been exploring the Android test package and I'm very confused on how to implement functional testing for endpoint-to-endpoint.

Consider the example below, I have 4 activities: 1. A Contact List Activity 2. A View Contact Activity 3. An Add/Edit Contact Activity 4. A Sync Contact List activity

I want to automate a few tests that will go through multiple test cases simulating a user experience: From launching the application, to selecting 'Add contact;' opening the add contact activity, entering data, saving it, going back to the list activity, and verifying the new contact was saved properly.

As I understand it, ActivityInstrumentationTestCase<T extends Activity> and ActivityUnitTestCase<T extends Activity>, are only useful for testing single activity functionality.

But what if I need to switch between 2 or more activities inside a single functional test case?

HTC EVO 4G :: Cant Get Fast On Keyboard

Jul 7, 2010

I know this is a personal problem and not one with the phone itself, but its really frustrating that I just cant seem to get fast at all with this keyboard. It honestly seems like it dosent even keep up with my fingers and isnt always responsive when I press a key quickly. I tried taking off of the auto-correct and spell-suggestion functionalities and still have the same problem. One of the reasons why this is such a huge problem for me is because I am used to typing blazing fast, on a computer I type about 80wpm and on every phone that I have ever had with a keyboard I never actually tested myself but I had to be typing even quicker than 80wpm, I was suppppper fast without even looking at the phone about 50 percent of the time (in school). I knew that it would be harder to type on a touch screen phone, although I thought the massive screen would it make it pretty easy, and I messed around a little with the touch keyboard on the cliq and I started to pick it up a little but I just cant seem to get fast at all on the Evo. So I just wanted to know if anybody has any tips for me or any altv. keyboards that I can use, although I did try a couple already (pro keyboard and droid x keyboard) and none of them really seemed to make any difference. Also I want to point out that I had the ipod touch for about a year now and I am very quick at typing onthat even though I hardly ever have to type on it.

Wow, just ran a Short Bench of 158. Sorry but that's damned quick at 1.19. Linpack just logged in at 39.19 - wow! Best I ever did with Snap was 38. Holy moly, just ran a Quadrant of 2242!
