HTC Eris :: Change Settings Within Gscript To Boost Performance?
Sep 29, 2010
I've recently rooted my eris to Xtrsense 4.5 and have a few questions. My quadrant score pre root was 205. After root, with JIT_on, overclock 748 the score was 298. Is this typical? are there other settings I can change within gscript to boost the performance? Should I alter the minimum clock speed from default? I have a2sd and cach2sd ON. How do I know these are actually working? After running advaced task killer, my available memory is around 65 megs. Is this a normal figure for the eris? I'm not completely sure how the memory/cache works on mobile phones. I assume 70 megs of RAM is different than information stored in the Cache.

I am on my 3rd android phone, and the first thing I do on everyone is turn off all screen animations.
You do this in Menu-Settings-Display- NO ANIMATIONS
Doing this makes opening and closing apps, flinging through screens and many other things much faster.
You'll loose the cool looking transition when coming in or out of an app. But this is well worth it, IMO.
It's all about performance

I am wondering if there is actually an appreciable performance boost when overclocking the Droid CPU. Does it really improve performance, or is it more just so we can say "Hey lookee here! I OC'd mah Droid!"? Nothing wrong with the latter if thats the case, I am just wondering.
Specifically I am wondering about framerates in games. I have Angry Birds (for example) on both my Droid and my iPod Touch. It is smooth as silk on the Touch, but the framerate sucks balls on Droid. Wondering if OC'ing will do anything for that.

So its pretty simple. Do you use autokiller? Does it seem to boost the performance of your phone? Chime in, good, bad, or indifferent.

Ever since I added conditional text formatting on my list items I've noticed a performance drop. It's still usable but I'm somewhat obsessive about performance/experience so I would really like to tweak my approach as best I can. The following snippet is how I'm achieving my conditional formatting. Is this the only way? (Perf drop appears to be related to making TextViews spannable)

From reading Romain Guy's blog post, I understand keep static reference to a Drawable can create huge memory leaks. So what is the recommended solution if I don't want to reload my big Drawable image every time screen orientation changes and effect on performance? Currently my app takes >3 seconds to complete each orientation change.

Ive created a small application, for people like me who dont like typing the same thing over and over. I use it for things like tethering and reboot. Its basically a small database in which you can save your scripts and run them easily from within Android ( either with normal shell or su ). Ive decided to make it open source ( project can be found on google code, a link is listed below ), so people don't have to be afraid something else is executed as root.
Here are some scripts that have been created so far. script that calls the bootdeb.sh - su /sdcard/debian/bootdeb. Make lite version for themes, basically deletes system ringtones, notifications and alarms so themes install properly on rc33 update
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2, /dev/block/mtdblock /system
rm -r /system/media/audio/ringtones
rm -r /system/media/audio/notifications
reboot
Backup system sounds to sdcard -
cp -r /system/media/audio /sdcard/audio

I'm looking into writing an Android game, tough I don't curerntly own an Android device. For those of you who own a device, how does the performance on the emulator relate to real device performance? I'm especially interested in graphics related tasks. This obviously depends on both the machine running the emulator, and the specific device in question, but I'm talking rough numbers here. This question is a duplicate, but since that post is heavily outdated, I figured it's irrelevant by now.

Will Android 2.0/2.1 improve performance? The Eris is a cool phone and all but it simply cant keep up with me. There is nothing wrong with my phone also. I have rebooted it and have 80mb free memory. Same thing at Verizon store display phone. It just cant keep up and the lag and waiting periods (1 second or so) are annoying me. Yes one second is alot of lag time when you are trying to do things. It sounds like "only one second" but there are 100 of these one second lag times all over the phone. Im not even an "expert" or "hardcore" user.
Anyon know if Android 2.0 will run faster? Playing a simple MP3 while trying to navigate the phone increases the lag times. Why dosnt the older iphone 3g have these lag issues when they both have equal CPUs?
When will Google and HTC aknowledge the MAJOR issue with the ENTIRE phone slowing down the a crawl once available RAM goes under 30mb. (common with all Android phones) Is it SO hard to have the ability to shutdown apps and automatically remove them from ram when Im done using them? This is the same stupidity Windows Mobile went through back in 2003. Yes I understand that Android will remove unused apps from RAM to make room for the next one but this is where the lag is coming from. The entire phone slows to a crawl unless you free up some memory with 3rd party apps.

I have a couple friends with the Eris that went from loving their phones to hating them shortly after receiving the 2.1 OTA upgrade. They were quite happy with 1.5, but were looking forward to 2.1 - because I bragged about the improvements in the leaks.
I was playing around with their phones last night and they were having serious lag when scrolling, receiving calls and switching from portrait to landscape mode. I turned off window animations completely and those issues went away immediately. The phones are now pretty speedy.
If you're looking for that setting, it's under: Settings > Sound & display > Animation > No animations.

Got some great help last night getting setcpu up and running and there is some difference, mostly because I'm using LWP. I just had some questions on setting it up correctly. On the main page, you have the two scroll bars (I have both set to 710 and haven't had any problems) , under that is the Scaling option, What exactly does that do, and how should it be set for the balance between performance and battery life?
Follow up question, under profiles, is there any recommended profiles I should set up? Currently I have Screen off: 528/528 on demand with priority 50 (not sure what all of this means though). Are there any others that should be established?

With Advanced Task Killer, which apps should I exclude to avoid poor app performance. For example, I realized after reading another thread today that I should exclude the Weather Channel widget. I could not figure out why the weather conditions did not update automatically. Excluded the widget and now it updates. Any other apps that are similar?

looking for some educated feedback on this, is the droid really better in terms of power than the eris? i returned the eris because i thought it was too slow and didn't stack up to what the droid is, but was i wrong?
i look at the verizonwireless website and they have the same stats, except for the keyboard of course. but then i hear some htc users say that the eris is just as powerful as the droid and can do everything that the droid can in terms of performance. on the other hand i get people telling me that the droid is the 'powerhouse' and ive read that the droid is the 'high-end' phone. people have told me about better cpu/processor/memory - is this true and is it noticeable? and will it effect the phones longevity compared to the eris for the future? i heard that it will as more updates comes out... someone told me that the eris will never be up to par with the droid hardware wise and that the droid is the safe bet if you want the most from future updates ... also read that the eris will be 'long in the tooth' (old) faster.

I would like to change my region/language setting independently from the general LANGUAGE-SETTING in settings !!!
Ok that means i dont care about the language my apps will be displayed in as long as it is english "which should be in every rom.."
But i do care about the region they are set in... means when i start MIUI News/Weather (geniewidget.apk) I want to see News from Germany and temperature in Celsius..
When I play "who-becomes-rich" I want Euro for currency! and so on ...
Is there any way to set the region like that ? (build.prop or anything else..?)
Im using MIUI v4 with my G-Nex.
