I'm currently running stock 1.5. I'm seriously considering rooting my phone. I've got a decent bit of Linux experience, so I doubt I'll mess anything up too awful bad.
Any good reason to wait on the 2.1 OTA rather than root now? Has anyone rooted and wished they didn't? I know most of the benefits, I'm wondering about the risk.

Before I updated the leaked 2.1 v3, I used to have an app called Google Talk that would allow me to chat with google contacts. Now, I can't seem to find it anywhere both on the phone or online? The closest I could find is google services which goes through the Dolphin browser - clumsy in my opinion.

I made my girlfriend a gmail account so we could use that rather than text, but I can't seem to figure out how to sync the google talk contact to her. I added her gmail account to her contact card but on google talk she's still coming up as a separate contact.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am using IMO for Instant Messaging and so i removed the TALK app from my Nexus one (running Oxygen Rom) using Titanium backup.Recently there was an update in TALK app and i wanted to try it (Hangouts) so i installed it from the playstore. It was very slow on my mobile so i removed it again.
Now i am getting Talk notifications (with the old TALK icon) in the notification bar. along with the IMO notifications. When i click on the Talk notifications it does not open any app. and the messages that are notified by TALK are missing in the IMO app so its very frustrating.
So i thought it must be the HANGOUTS app and re installed it from the Play Store. Now i get Hangout notification, Talk notification and IMO notification. I removed the Hangouts app from the Application Manager and i still getting the TALK notifications.
I kind a miss pin messaging on a blackberry is there social areas for Google talk? I lost a lot of friends coming from blackberry to android and they don't like using Google talk. And there is no way I am going back to blackberry.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOk I've read a gazillion threads on battery life and 2.1 etc etc and you have me all waiting anxiously for an update and bigger batteries but what about actual talk time on the phone? didn't see any threads about that. Its not uncommon for my phone to be a toy all week then on the weekend catch up with some buds or family or whatever and yak on the thing for 2 hours straight. Will it hold? I know my old razer with an ext batt would go 4 hours talk time easy, glimmer would do 2.5 hrs easy with stock battery sometimes more. Pearl did well, haven't really talked the Storm out cause its my work phone and I tend to shun that thing on the weekends ....so let me know how long you've talked on it! Battery life does seem to stink but I can't put the damn thing down so I'm sure that has something to do with it and all my other smartphones sucked battery wise too the first week or so, so I'm not passing judgment yet, just want to know how long i can talk on the thing before it dies....I will do my own testing soon but would like some ideas.

I went into the application manager and cleared the app data, and also power cycled the phone. Any other suggestions? I doesn't appear i can delete and re-download.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThought it would be a prudent thread to list all of the battery killing apps and processes (ie don't shut down right)that have been found in 2.1. The one that I found, the hard way after 3 straight days of only getting 10 hours of battery life, is the Google Talk service. I accidentally opened it and System Panel didn't kill it. I only found it by looking at Battery Uses>Running Services.
View 17 Replies View RelatedMy status on Google Talk never changes despite the fact that I have the settings checked in settings to "go to away when I turn off the screen" as well as "show mobile indicator to friends". This wasn't functional in 1.5, 2.1v1 and now 2.1v3 on my Eris. Has anyone had success? I've seen this function work on a TMobile rooted G1 but that's it.
I can watch the indicator change on the web when I change it manually (signed in as another user), and its very responsive. However, no auto-away when i lock the phone, and no indication that I'm on a mobile phone.
Ive been reading this forum for several months, and bought my Eris last month (previous Blackberry Storm owner). With my Blackberry, I was used to having Blackberry Messenger service that allowed me to message other BB owners, without using my SMS/MMS count with Verizion. Without that, I have set up Google Talk as an alternative.
Pardon me asking something here that everyone else proabably already knows, but does the Google Talk messages get counted as SMS/MMS messages by Verizon ? I do not use it except to message one of my friends from time to time, so I am fairly ignorant about the various types of 'chat' messaging systems out there.
Thanks for your help, and I am enjoying everything that this Eris can do so far. I was a bit leery at making the switch, but I can see Android systems are a good way to go.
Anybody out there see what I'm seeing? It seems as if the power/sleep button is a bit more recessed than the phone/talk button that pops out a little more. Could this just be from heavier use since I am always hitting the sleep button after phone use? Or, is this a HTC design to prevent you from hitting the button as easily. Not really a huge difference here just enough to feel if you run your finger over both of them. Wondering if it will get lower over time? Good ol' ocd flaring up again.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI tried wireless Tethering via Bluetooth with the PDANet App and it was an utter failure...i'd get a connection but it was up and down every 5-10 minutes...I can get a solid connection when tethering over USB with PDAnet...But that sucks as it only seems to work with the Charging cable that came with the Eris and not the HUNDREDS of other usb cables i have laying around....
So everyone said...'ROOT!' Its easy to wirelessly Tether when you 'Root!'
you can even use your phone as a hotspot...

I want the flash 10.1 on my htc eris so I assume that I need froyo 2.2. Is there a guide to do this or will the eris get flash 10.1 soon?

When you root and flash new ROMs. I know you have to reload your apps and other settings but do you have to reprogram your phone through VZW every time? I know myself that I would go through several ROMs trying to find one that fits perfectly.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently rooted via the 1-click method and I now want to try a custom ROM. I've tried to read many, many posts but I still have some questions.
1. I'm still not quite clear on how much will be "wiped out" when I flash a new ROM. Is it similar to when I did the OTA 2.1 upgrade? Will I lose all of my installed apps?
2. I thinking of trying xtrSENSE. In looking through the info for that ROM, it's a bit hard to distinguish what's current info and what's info that has evolved over time as the different releases have come out. Is there a single, reliable place to go and be sure I'm getting just the latest info?
3. When I did the 1-click process, I got confused about when to use Vol Up+Power and Vol Down+Power. Can someone explain what each one is for? For example, when I used one of them (can't remember which) I got a screen which I did not really understand. It said "HBOOT" and a number of other things on it. Is there an explanation of this screen somewhere?
4. I assume "personal" data on my SD card is safe? For example, photos? Or is there the chance I will lose all of that too?
5. How about SMS messages? Do I need to back those up too if I don't want to lose them?
if i root my phone do i need to flash a new ROM on to it or can i run my current os and just get root apps off the market??

I unrooted my Eris and used this app to reroot it and it worked fine with no glitches.
A nice alternative to other rooting methods for the Eris.
I have been searching much of the day and while I've found several threads about 2.2 roms and rooting I have not found a tutorial or guide for rooting an Eris with 2.1 on it or for installing a 2.2 rom such as kaosfroyo. Can someone point me in the right direction?
My wife currently has and Eris with the OTA 2.1 upgrade and we would like to see if a 2.2 version would make it run better.
Getting my replacement tomorrow and i am rooting. How will i know if my phone will have the OTA 2.1 or a possibly v3 leak?

Here are my questions:
Is it even rooted? How am I supposed to know? Why is my phone becoming so laggy with calling features? How do I completely unroot my droid Eris? What if the official OTA update comes out and I want it?
If I happen to sell my SD card will my Eris remain rooted? Or will everything just go back to stock since I don't have the card in my phone anymore? Also, what would a fair price be for a used Scandisc 16 GB SD card? I have it listed for $35. Too high? Too low?
