HTC EVO 4G :: Turning Off Internet?
Jun 12, 2010
I hope i'm not just being completely dumb here, but I just switched from a Blackberry to an Evo. I know on my BB there was a way to shut down the internet when it was not in use to keep the battery from draining. When I get online on my Evo I don't see where to actually close out of a session. I have just been hitting the home button, or back button. It gets me back to my home screen, but I'm not sure if this is actually turning the internet off. Can someone please let me know if I am doing this right, or is there another way?

Ive tried turning the phone off and also removing the battery but still no luck. It still says ''turning on'' when i go into settings.I dont no if theres something wrong with the phone as i don't think its the network because i can still make calls and the bars are stuck on two.I'm on orange and they normally have good reception/network.

I seem to be seeing an issue with the data network access on the EVO. When it happens none of my applications get internet aceess and my mobile network status says "turning on". The only way I've found to fix it is to pull the battery. Any one else seeing this? If so is there a better fix than pulling the battery?

I see another thread on Locale, but it seems to be focused on it technical shortcomings. I thought a thread about how people are using this app would be helpful.
Now... I use Locale for the following:
- Turning the ringer down when I get to work (obviouse one)
- Turning GPS/Bluetooth/wifi on when I plug it in the phone (think car dock)
- Turn on Wifi when I get near my known hot spots.
- Turn off GPS/Bluetooth/wifi off and turn down brightness when my battery is low.
And the last one is a good one for me...
- I have a GV number. When I call my phone from that number, it turns the ringer volume all the way up and it turns on wifi and GPS. This is my "lost phone aid". It turns on the locating features so I can see where the phone is using iGoogle and Latitude, and I can hear the phone if it is "in the cushions" on vibrate.
Anyone else get creative with Locale?

When I trun my phone on, the scene changes from the scene I had chosen (the waving grass) to "current (unsaved)".If I change it to the one I prefer (saved with my name) I am asked to "save or cancel" the incorrect one.I click cancel, and all is well. But why does it change and how do I keep the scene selected that I want?I just want it to stick on the scene that I have chosen.

I found that by typing on the call screen:
*#*#4636#*#* ( *#*#INFO#*#* )
display the menu:
"Phone info" and scroll down to
"Turn off radio"
and you can access some additionnal settings and it seems you can turn off GSM networks without disabling FM radio or other networks (source:
[URL]....
I try it and this is working on my Samsung Galaxy S II. But... any gadget or a small program (maybe on Market) whit which this can be done? (with simple one touch of a single icon on the screen)

Right basically you can find the UK T mobile internet settings on the T mobile website. On the Speed Test app, the highest speeds I get are 1.8m/bs downloads and around 500kpbs upload. However, those were at off peak times at night etc (probably when nobody is using the net).Generally I get anything from 0.3 m/bs to 0.9 m/bs though. Lately I've been experiencing some inconsistent internet speeds and reconnection attempts so for I've gone back to the default settings. Tbh though I'm not sure if it makes much difference.

I just want to verify that my phone is off before bed, because I forget whether I've turned off my phone or whether it's just sleeping.I pick up my phone, but I can't verify that it's turned off without unintentionally turning it on, because the only way to check that I know of is to press the power/sleep button. Unfortunately, that will turn on the phone if I've already turned it off, and therefore I have to wait as it boots up, then power it down.Is there a way to verify that an Evo phone is turned off without turning it on in the process of verifying that it is off?

Just got a new Evo on a trade in, appears to be new (i.e. not a refurb). It's running the .6 version of 2.2. But Wifi keeps turning itself off. Anyone else see this happening on theirs?

I woke up and my phone wouldn't turn on. So the screen would not turn on, but the green indicator light would flash. Now in not my most brightest of moments, I plugged it into my charger. When I later checked, I felt that the back was warm, so I unplugged it. The phone would still not turn on so I put It in rice. I then ordered a repair kit to open the back to open and apply rice (it came very late), and once this was done it still did not turn. Now the water damage indicator in the sim slot changed color, but I am not actually sure how to proceed. Can I do anything to salvage this phone or should I just get a new one?

I'm writing a program that processes SensorEvents. It needs to keep running and keep processing events even when the user isn't directly working with their phone (i.e. when it's just sitting in their pocket). To make that work,I need to prevent the phone from turning off.On the other hand,I don't want to waste power unnecessarily, so I don't want to prevent the screen from turning off.Looking at the documentation, it seems that a WakeLock of type PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK should do exactly what I want. But it doesn't work: as soon as the screen turns off, my program stops running (or at least onSensorChanged() stops getting called). If I instead use a lock of type SCREEN_DIM_WAKE_LOCK, everything works as expected and my program keeps running. But then the screen stays on (although dimmed), which is far from ideal.

One of the first things I did when I got my Evo was turn off HTC Sense - can't stand its gaudy widgets and general bloat. However, one thing I am missing is HTC's little toggle widgets - particularly the one that lets you turn on/off 4G. The native Android toggle widget doesn't let you control 4G. Does anyone know any 3rd-party / alternative widgets to toggle 4G? Given that it's the first 4G phone, they probably don't exist but it would be cool if someone with know, how could develop one!

I have a HTC Hero for the last few weeks and really happy with it. I friend recently got the Lg Eve and was looking at it. She wanted to turn off the Wireless Network to cut down on when it accesses the 3G network, but unlike the Hero, I wasn't able to find the Mobile Network setting under Wireless Controls. We took it back to the Rogers store to ask if he sorta blew it off saying she didn't need to turn it off and help her installed a counter to track her data usage. So is there a way to turn it off when it's not in use?

I woke up this morning and noticed that my 3G was off - so I go into menu to turn it back on and it says "Turning on" so I sit there and watch it for like 5 minutes, still turning on, so I decided to leave it alone for a few hours. Still "turning on". By the way, at this point in time I was running the rooted leak #3 that jcase posted. So here are the steps I've taken to get this issue resolved, all to no avail:
1) reboot - when it booted back up, still said "turning on..."
2) factory data/dalvik clear - same. after setup, still "turning on..."
3) restore to previous NAND backup from a few days ago - still "turning on..."
4) factory data/dalvik wipe and flash new ROM (Ivan's 1.0 OC ROM) - same thing.. after setup, still "turning on..."
5) *228 program - phone rebooted with the 3G symbol showing, but no data connection could be found by any apps, including the browser. shortly after that, the 3G icon disappeared and we're back to "turning on..."
6) update PRL - same as above
7) flash Alltel/VZW Hybrid PRL - same as above
8) Turn on Airplane Mode - 3G went from "turning off..." to "off", but as soon as I took out of of Airplane mode, it went back to "turning off"
9) Battery pull - same thing.. rebooted, still "turning off..."
So now, I'm sitting here with Ivan's new 1.0 ROM but no data. Every now and then, the 3G icon will show up and in the settings, it tells me that mobile network is on, but the icon never shows that it's receiving data, only sending. Then the icon goes away and it's back to "turning on...". By the way, my radio is 2.41.04.02.02.

I've been trying to see if i have a defective unit in that the display is taking up more battery than standby when the phone is not in use and so far my phone has turned off by itself 3 times in the past 13 hours. I had it 100% charged last night before going to bed so i unplugged it from the wall, put it on the nightstand in airplane mode, and i woke up an hour late this morning because my alarm didn't go off because my captivate turned off at some point in the night. I fired it up and it had 94% battery. So i immediately put it into standby and put it in my pocket and went to work. When i got to work i pressed the standby button and nothing happened, so i held it in and voila, the phone is turning on. So on my way to work it randomly shut down again. So now it has 90% battery so i put it on standby again and let it sit for 3 hours. I just checked on it and it had shut off again. It's now at 88% and shows Display=54%, Cell Standby=15%. I think this thing is completely whacked. Between this and the GPS not working i think i'm done. I'm definitely going to take this one back, but i'm concerned about getting a new one that's even more screwed up as it seems there are such few good working copies of this phone out there. Is there some setting that turns your phone off after a certain amount of standby time that i might have somehow mistakenly turned on? I feel like that would be a ridiculous setting to have, but it seems like there are a lot of options on this phone so ya never know.

I use an application that uses GPS, it still continues to check for GPS after I quit it. I use ATK to kill it, lock it, unlock it, and it's still checking for GPS while it's locked. The only way I found to fix this is to restart the phone, and wanted to know if there was any way to stop making it check for GPS without restarting the phone...
