HTC EVO 4G :: Seemingly Unable To Root
Jul 8, 2010
I've tried to follow the Idiot proof guide, but that doesn't work because unrevoked no longer works after the OTA. I've tried to follow other web guides that has you place PC36IMG.zip into the root directory, hold volume down and power and boot to the HBoot thing. Well, that loads, it searches for and finds PC36, and starts to load from it through the blue progress bar. After the bar is finished, it waits a few seconds, then says "Main version is older! Update Fail! Do you want to reboot the device?" And I can not find any other way to continue. The only options I've found to root are either do this with the P36 or unrevoked, which is now not working.

I know very little about Android. I do have a background in developing apps for the Palm VII; it was my job, in part. But that is as far as it goes. I have a Zio and it suits me fine. I do not care about the next Android release, I just want to do what I need to do. That said, when I download from the market, I am presented with a list of things the software has access to. Location, SD Card, Passwords, email address, and the list goes on and on. I am not telling most of you anything you do not allready know.
My question is this: how are we protected from apps that are designed to take this info and use it in a nefarious manner? Again, I am not an expert. I am not paranoid, just curious. We all have PCs. We all know about virus issues, pishing scams, bots, trojans, scams, etc. Seems to me, the last thing we would accept is software that gathers copious quantities of sensitive data; we do, so it seems, accept it from developers of applications that we freely DL from the market.

I have a link to the Facebook app on one of my screens and whenever I open it and immediately click on "News Feed", there are posts from a matter of minutes or 1 hour ago even when I haven't opened the app for a full day or two. I am not root, using stock everything and have downloaded all of the OTA updates. My Settings > Accounts and Sync menu shows accounts only for Google and Weather, nothing for Facebook. Auto-sync data is checked but shouldn't it only do so for the accounts that are setup?

I've just started debugging my first three line long android app and I can't seem to use the debug tool like I want to. Here's my code:
public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
setContentView(R.layout.main);
int a = 1 / 0;
}
Now I expect the debugger to halt the thread and show me the line number of statement where the division by zero occurs. No, instead it shows some other method internal to the system for which I have no source. To make the matters worse, there is no exception message either. Prior to this app, I created one which would do something when a button was pressed. If any exception was raised, again no useful line number or exception message would be shown. As of right now, there is no way to debug my app. I'm using the latest SDK along with Eclipse ADT plugin and debugging on a real device (Nexus One).

I was rooted in 2.1 and lost root when upgrading to 2.2. Ninja ICON still appears. I tried to root using the instruction in DroidLife. The one click root failed with a rc 12. The Android SDK package that I downloaded was for 2.2. What do I need to do to get root in 2.2

Excuse my lack of knowledge, but... why is it that we are unable to root the B2 to 2.1+ ourselves? We did it with 1.6 way before Samsung announced anything. I thought Google publicly release the source codes to each Android OS. Can't we take the source and modify it to be usable on the B2? Coudn't we possibly take 2.1+ from another (possibly Samsung) phone and transfer the data over? We know Samsung's claim that the B2 could not handle 2.1+ is pure BS.

This is now the second day that I'm trying to root my Evo 4G. So far, I've unlocked the bootloader using the htcdev.com method, but I can't get root access. I think my problem is an old version of hboot (0.99.0001, got it from latest HTC software update [2.3.4]), since the Revolutionary tool is saying that my version isn't supported. I've looked all over for how to update my hboot to 2.15 or 2.16, but nothing has worked. I still have S-ON.
I've tried flashing Amon Ra via command prompt (hangs on "waiting for device") and using the Android Flasher program (hangs on "please wait while your phone is flashed"). I've followed all the steps in the first method on this guide (androidforums com/evo-4g-all-things-root/488901-revised-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html, but to no avail.
How in the world do I go about rooting this thing? Or even just updating my hboot version?

I am new to root, and have been trying to root my Incredible. I have the OTA 2.2, and waited for Unrevoked to release the new program. I have downloaded the drivers and it says that has the most current drivers installed, but when I open the Unrevoked 3 re-flash program it does not recognize the phone...any ideas where to start?

I updated my LG E400's firmware from 10J to 10L last with PC Sync. After upgrading the root was still intact. SuperUser still installed, though I had to install Lucky Patcher and had to select Patch to Android for the Android Market again. However, when I tapped About phone in Settings, there was an error and a force close. I looked up the LG firmware site and downloaded the 10L firmware and updated with KDZ updater. The problem started right after that.
I have not been able to root with any ninja script, doomlord script, superoneclick. I have tried reverting to an older firmware (the original version 10J cannot be downloaded) 10D or 10I I think, but got the same error while trying to root. Finally, I tried the "without computer" means of rooting like framaroot and Exynosabuse but none worked. So here I have a fine phone with the latest firmware but with all crap like the LG Keyboard and Google Search, Remote Talk, Play Book, Weather and stuff that I can't get rid off. Also, I can't install Link2SD to increase internal memory.

I have been reading about the sdcard partitioning on the forum here and I thought I might ask a question that I couldn't find along my travels whilst reading. I have a 16GB SDcard class 6 and here is my question. I have a HTC Desire with setROM 4.5, before I installed this ROM I partitioned my sdcard with a 512MB ext partition using ROM Manager (paid version), now everything seemed to work just fine with the flash etc, but when I go into the SD card + phone storage I see this: When I use Root Explorer application, I cant see the other partition (512MB one) I made? Can anyone advise if this is normal? I can move my apps to sd though through the manage applications section. I should add, I have no idea why I even created this external partition, do i even need it?

I'm having a problem downloading Easy Root..I bought it once, refunded it because I didn't have anough money in my account, then bought it again the same day...andnow it finally went through this morning and it says purchased because I got paid this morning...but when I try to click install it says "Download unsuccessful"...I've tried everything to get it to install but it won't work and I can't refund it again. If I could refund it again I would be able to successfully install it like I did with Rom manager and setCPU.

I was running stock 2.1 on my Droid and I recently rooted it using the instructions here: How-To Root your stock 2.1 Droid. It went off without a hitch. Then, I went to Froyo 2.2, as found here: Download: Newer Motorola Droid Froyo Leak FRF57 | Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog.
After switching to Froyo, it appeared that I was having some issues with my root. I still had the superuser ninja, and I could still use Terminal Emulator. When I opened upTitanium Backup though, it asked me to allow permission which I did, and then it told me that I was not rooted (Setup behaved similarly). So I went and applied the update patch available on the Droid-Life page where I got Froyo and it appeared to work. To my knowledge I AM rooted. I have a custom boot animation and Titanium and Setcpu are working fine. Titanium says my root access is ok and that I am using busybox 1.15.3 from app. All is well, EXCEPT that when I try to use the cp command via terminal emulator I cannot. I recently tried to add a custom boot animation using the following:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /Dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cp /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /system/media/bootanimation.zip
mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
exit
After the first line of code I got:usage: mount [-r] [-w] [-o options] [-type] device directory
After the second line however I got the error cp not found. HOWEVER, I was able to apply the boot animation using root explorer. Also, i tested the command busybox and got busybox not found. I can still utilize cd /system app though.
Basically I need to know if I am only partially rooted. I am having a ball with this phone and I would hate to be unable to do some future root process because of a glitch now.

The procedures mentioned to root or install CWM Recovery in Huawei x3 U8510 requires you to go to USB Debugging mode in Settings but my device does not have a working Stock ROM.
I am able to boot into the Stock Recovery mode (Volume + and power button) but unable to install CWM(tried several versions for U8510), SU, Custom ROM etc cuz it says signature verification failed even though I tried cmw zip files which were signed.
I tried going into download mode by pressing Volume - and power button that didn't work too. Even though the Huawei symbol came up I couldn't root the device using
P.S: I couldn't find any of the latest ROMs for this device too!

I tried rooting my Samsung Galaxy Ace Duos SCH-I589 phone running GINGERBREAD.FA13 (v 2.3.6) using various methods but to no avail.
UnlockRoot gives the error "FAIL TO GET SHELL ROOT" and their website claims there is nothing they can do about it. I tried downloading other update files and placing them in the root of my sdcard but on starting the phone in recovery mode there is no option of installing from sdcard. On confirming that a new OS is to be loaded, it straight away goes to USB downloading screen (even when no usb is connected).
Any ways and means to successfully root the phone.
And before you recommend I watch the xda Noob video, let me just mention that there is no dedicated section for this particular model, nothing apart from Unlockroot and recovery mode pops up in any of the searches on any of the search engines, there are no other posts relating to rooting of this phone in this forum or any other forum on xda. (And yes I know this phone sucks but I desperately needed GSM+CDMA dual sim and this was the only option to me).

Here is the scenario:
Motorola Droid - Original
1. Rooted 2.1, then
2. OTA Stock Update to 2.2, then
3. Seem to have lost root, However - I still have the Superuser Permissions Icon.
I use Barnacle for WiFi Tether - I get a "Permission Denied" error when I try to start the application. I also went into the terminal emulator and tried an "su" which also gave a permission denied response. I tried "sudo" and also got permission denied response. Others have told me this is common with this progression of events. However, How do I now ROOT 2.2 in this scenario?
