HTC EVO 4G :: Ethics And Bandwidth Usage From Cell Phone

May 18, 2010

This is a question asked in various incarnations across smartphone forums, and I'm sure here as well. But I'll ask again with a slightly different spin. Is it "wrong" to consume much bandwidth from your cell phone? The implication of high bandwidth usage being the stress of the network and unfairly impinging against other users. It is an argument I've seem most from iPhone and other users contracted with AT&T.

My take is to view the availability and use of bandwidth like a market. The supply and demand for data establishes an "equilibrium" bitrate. With this view in mind, I think it seems a little more pointless to begrudge high bandwidth users just for consuming what is available. Maybe there ought to be a cost associated with high usage, which could be funneled into making a more robust network. But the responsibility ultimately is with the carriers to see that demand can be satisfied.

Android :: Internet Bandwidth Usage / Paranoid About This

Dec 2, 2009

Ok so IMO wasting bandwidth is a terrible act in this day and age. Yes I'm talking to you sitting at home browsing the forums on your phone but not on WiFi but 3G. Am I the only one paranoid about this? I think you should use WiFi whenever available because if 50 guys hog all the bandwidth watching youtube over 3G while they are at home with WiFi and 1 guy riding the bus can't check his email is that fair? Let me know what you guys think on the matter.

Samsung Captivate :: Bandwidth Usage / Feeds And Updates Widget

Sep 28, 2010

I am trying to track down a rogue application that seems to be receiving massive amounts of data. On the iPhone, I would use about 200mb/month due to WiFi at work and at home. However, on the Samsung Captivate, I can go from 100MB/month to 2+GB/month! I noticed huge amounts of data being used on my commutes to and from work.

On occasion, my home WiFi/DSL would get so lagged due to my Captivate being on the network that my son would complain and I would then put the phone in air plane mode. I reasoned that if it was happening on my WiFi network, as well as 3G, then perhaps I could using my router to log the activity to see what sites my phone was trying to connect to, then perhaps I could pinpoint the offending application.

My phone was connecting to a website that was part of a posting that was on facebook, which was only showing on the Samsung "Feeds and Updates" widget. I wasn't running the native facebook application at the time. I had the "Feeds and Updates" widget set to never update, unless I manually did it. Why was it trying to connect when it shouldn't have been? Don't know. Am I certain that this widget was the offending application? Not sure. Since removing the widget, I haven't had any bandwidth spikes.
PS. I tried Droid Wall, but it fails to work.

Android :: Getting Cell Signal Strength For Current Cell Vs Neighboring Cells

Jan 6, 2010

I'm writing an android application that collects cell signal strengths.I am having trouble getting the "current" cell signal strength, but I don't have any problem getting the "neighboring" cell signal strengths. To get the current cell signal strength, I created a PhoneStateListener and implemented the onSignalStrengthChanged callback. It works, but not very well.It seems like the signal strength hardly ever changes, and resolution jumps to only a few numbers.I would accept the answer that the resolution of the signal strength hardware is coarse, but when I use the TelephonyManager's getNeighboringCellInfo() method, it works much better. The signal strength readings from neighboring cells change frequently, and they have much better resolution. So, how can I get the current cell signal strength in the same way that I am getting the neighboring cell strengths? It seems odd to me that the functionality of the neighboring cells is better than the current cell.

If anyone knows how, please let me know.

HTC EVO 4G :: What Do Cell Standby And Phone Idle Mean?

Sep 13, 2010

There has been almost no variation from that. Every now and then Display or Wi-Fi would show up as about 2% each, then disappear after a while. That's all.Last night my battery reached 10%, I turned off the power, charged it overnight for 12 hours, unplugged it, and turned the power back on. I noticed two things:

1. My Battery Use list changed drastically. I assume this is actually a better representation of what the list should look like than what I had been seeing for two weeks, but the other thing I noticed was

2. My battery was draining a lot faster than it ever had during the previous two weeks, even during idle periods. My battery had consistently been draining at around 1% per hour idle until today. Now I'm seeing it drop 5% in LESS than an hour while idle (idle meaning the screen shuts off and I don't use it).

So my question is, what do Cell Standby and Phone Idle mean? Previously they had both been 2% and my idle battery use was excellent. But today they both shot up to the 20-30% range and I'm thinking this may account for the excessive battery drain even while the phone is sleeping. Why would these two things be so high? Nothing changed between yesterday and today except that I turned off the phone and turned it back on. I almost feel like I messed something up by simply turning it off!

HTC EVO 4G :: Sprint Cell Phone Service Phoenix

Apr 15, 2010

If anyone is CURRENTLY with Sprint for their cell service in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area of Arizona, could you please tell me how your cell service is?I'm looking at moving to the HTC EVO in June when my contract is up with Verizon, but I'm pretty worried about the quality of Sprint's service. Most comments I have heard about Sprint have been either average or negative. On the contrary, my time with Verizon has really been stellar, few if any dropped calls, coverage EVERYWHERE it seems, and pretty decent customer service.Even though Sprints plans are $30 to $40 cheaper than Verizon, it won't matter if the service stinks and I can't make/receive calls or get on broadband.Just trying to weigh my options as the Incredible will be out as well, and may have to go with that one instead.

HTC EVO 4G :: Cell Phone Transmitter & Battery Drain

Jun 3, 2010

A cell phone is a transmitter just like a radio tower, and higher power is required to send the signal farther. Every modern cell phone automatically adjusts its transmitter power based on reception. Fewer bars means faster battery drain when you are using your phone. Switching to 2G will not necessarily save battery. If you have a 3G tower nearby, then your battery will last longer. And if you have a spotty 4G connection, you'd best plug in, or don't use it. However, given equal signal strength, a 4G signal is MORE efficient per byte than 3G.

Android : Root Cdma Cell Phone?

Feb 23, 2010

If I ever figure out how to root my cellularsouth hero, can i or should I download and install 2.1 when we finally get it from my carrier? Will it just over write what I have on there or will it need to be flashed back to stock? There really is no way to back up the OS from what I can tell. When i jailbroke my iphone an upgrade just put it back to factory default with the upgrade. I don't think it works like that with Android right? Because of not baing able to back up the phone before hand i worry about bricking it.

I am also wondering since there is so much trouble rooting the cellularsouth version of the hero, if it is even worth it. By the time i or someone else figures it out 2.1 will be out and then it may be a long time to get that rooted too. Sometimes I wish this company I am with was not cdma. cdma seems to have the most trouble getting rooted. But we do get great signal and service, but thats about all with this company.
