the orientation feature on my Droid Eris is painfully slow going back and forth from landscape to portrait. Sometimes I have to gently knock on my desk for it to respond and that does not work all the time. Is there anything that I can do to rectify this?

I currently have a TabHost with 3 tabs.The content of each tab is an activity. The first and second tab make HTTP connections.The first tab still uses the UI thread (which i'm changing) so it would explain the slow orientation change since it's creating a fresh activity and making all those connections again. What I don't understand is why if I am on say Tab 3 which makes no connections at all does changing the orientation take such a long time (up to 5 seconds).In playing around with the TabWidget I noticed something that may be related.

I just got my eris yesterday (posting with it now), and I am finding typing in landscape quite uncomfortable while headphones are plugged in (i listen to a lot of music). The plug is vertical and doesn't allow me to grip the phone naturally. So, I was wondering if there was a simple way to get the reverse of landscape view. As in the eris's physical buttons would be to the left while typing instead of the right.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got my Droid Eris. It was working fine to go back and forth between landscape and upright, until I calibrated the G-sensor. Now I'm not sure what's going on. I'm not sure if I've done the calibration correctly (I assume you just sit it upright on a flat surface?) or what. It will randomly go into landscape mode, but then I can't get it back upright unless I go to the home screen.

View 18 Replies View RelatedMy Eris does not seem to be taking advantage of the WiFi speed capabilities of my home network. I just tested my network in multiple ways. I'm getting good connection speeds on all devices EXCEPT my Eris. Here's what I did:
1. I went to Speakeasy.net and tested the hard wired internet connection speed to my PC. The result was 22 mbps down.
2. I tested the wireless connection speed to my laptop, also via Speakeasy.net. Again, 22 mbps.
3. I tested the wireless connection speed to my wife's iMac, also via Speakeasy.net. Once again, 22 mbps
4. I tested the connection speed on my Eris (repeatedly) via a speed test app that I downloaded from the Market. Only 2.5 mbps.
5. I loaded the Speakeasy.net website in my Eris' Android browser and ran the same test. Only 2.9 mbps. So, all wired and wireless devices in the house are getting ~ 22 mbps, while my Eris is getting significantly less. Specifications:
-Eris is running default Android 1.5 OS
- Home wireless router is a Netgear Wireless-N Router model # WNR2000 running in WPA-PSK [AES] security mode. "Mode" is set to the highest -- "Up to 300 mbps."
So why does my phone change orientation in certain apps (email particularly) even though I don't rotate the phone? Is there a setting for this I just cannot find?

View 19 Replies View RelatedI've had Eris since last Christmas, so I say it's been almost 9 months or so. The biggest complain I have with this phone is how ridiculously slow the phone is. I was getting really tired of all the lags that the phone had. The major lags that made me very impatient were: 1. Phone dial lag 2. GPS lag (I had to wait 25 seconds for options to pop out after pressing "menu" button while the GPS was on.) 3. Whenever phone call comes in, it shows the digits first, and 7 seconds later, the names appeared. None of these problems were solved even after getting the phone replaced twice. I called the Verizon to see if I could get a replacement with another phone, however even after 5 attempts with various of speech techniques (even I've gotten upto a point where the rep offered me to switch to another phone) the answer was "No, you are stuck with that phone regardless whether you like it or not. View 29 Replies View RelatedSo lately my Eris has been running extremely slow. About a week ago I got a notification for "Internal memory is getting low." So after reading through several threads of the same topic and doing all the suggested actions (delete old text messages, uninstall unnecessary apps, clearing the cache for applications) my internal phone storage now says that there is 45.61 MB free. Yet, I still have not noticed any improvement in performance.
For example, I use Handcent to text message, and lately I have been unable to open it without it force closing every time. I've tried removing it as the default and using the native SMS program, but when I go to compose a new message it won't bring in any of my contacts when I go to select one. It just stays at a loading screen and then force closes. Also, it shows the phone number of an incoming text instead of the contact name as its stored in my phone book, so I pretty much have to guess who's number it is. Any thoughts on why it would do that? The dialer is just as bad, and since I don't have any of my friend's phone numbers memorized the phone is pretty much useless now and unable to perform the most basic of functions, using it to make calls.
I'm at my wit's end pretty much, the only other thing that I can think of is performing a factory reset. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions or experience as to whether a full reset actually helps?
My phone is not rooted. I know, I know. Rooting will improve performance, but it seems like a hassle to me and I'd rather not have to deal with it (at least not yet).
Handcent was awesome. Did past couple updates and now it opens incredibly slow. When it finally opens it force closes. Love handcent over stock messaging app. Maybe someone has an older version of the apk that used to run fine.

View 48 Replies View RelatedI live in Glendale, Arizona. My clock widget is too fast or too slow by 1 hr. I went ot the VZW Store and they told me it is a glitch with the Eris software. It is registering as Glendale, California making it 1 hour behind and when it is an hour ahead it registering the next town over which is Peoria, but the phone thinks it is Peoria, Illinois. I am a little turned off because if the GPS is turned on this problem should not occur. When I try an set the time to my home location instead of current location, it does not allow me to click it.

Past 2 days the wireless has been down due to a storm and I was forced to use phone for internet after not using it for months. Its slow almost dial up slow, even tho the phone shows its in 3G the browsing and download speeds are painfully slow. By the way I am using easy tether.

So my phone has been super slow, lagging, kicking me out of the internet, no calls when people say they call etc. I talked to Verizon and they want me to do a hard reset. Is this necessary?? It scares me to possibly lose all my stuff. So if I need to do this then what do I need to make sure is backed up??
Would love some help with this b/c my phone is really starting to frustrate me. My husband was in the store yesterday, sent me a txt and when he got back in the car asked me why I didn't respond. By the time I got his text, wrote back and it finally sent he was back in the car! So yeah lagging is such a great thing!
I had been hearing that it may have been because of Handcent SMS but I removed it and it still moves slow. Text messaging, moving to home screen, etc. Things just move very slow. How can I fix this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI got my x on launch day no root no 2.2 all stock .well i've been noticing its getting slower don't have much installed only about 10 apps. The browser will start and then stop when u tell it to go somewere then after a dew sec it takes back off. Text message when u bring it up it takes about 10 sec to load then another lag to start typing and there wont be any old messages in box and when they do finally come up u can't scroll threw the old ones.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have created an activity for my game which handles all orientation changes by itself and has a fixed "portrait" layout. Actually it uses the accelerometer and is rendered using 2D canvas methods. If the level has been completed I show up a highscore dialog in which the user can enter his name. The dialog is floating above the underlying level screen which gets blurred out nicely. This generally works.
Problem is that the dialog does not get rotated if the orientation of the phone changes. So even if the keyboard is exposed the dialog is shown in portrait mode instead of landscape. I have tried to use an activity with dialog theme instead but the behavior didn't change. After several tries it seems that I have found the reason for this: Once there's an activity with fixed orientation in the activity stack then all subsequent activities keep this orientation, too. They will not react on orientation changes anymore (e.g. if the keyboard gets exposed).
After upgrading to 1.5 SDK the described behavior changed a little bit. Now at subactivities indead react on orientation changes like expected. However, the need to have an opaque background! That means that neither dialogs nor activities with dialog theme will work. Those will stick with the orientation of the underlaying activity. So my workaround is to first start a sub-activity with an opaque black background. This activity then shows my highscore dialog on top. It looks quite okay but I wonder if there's a better solution? Is it possible to show a dialog above a fixed portrait or landscape activity which automatically adapts to orientation changes?
I've been using the last 4 versions of the KaosFroyo ROM and it has always done my phone some good. The only complaint is that the browser just runs so slow. The pinch zoom is slow and sometimes lags. Even typing in the browser is slow. Everything else runs fairly snappy which is why I continue to use this particular ROM. But the browsing part leaves much to be desired. anyone else? suggestions. I have wiped the correct way and have done reboots. But this problem seems to stick.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI was using xtrSense briefly right before I switched to KaosFroyo v31 and I must say I was very impressed with the responsiveness of xtrSense.That would be my first choice ROM for anyone wanting an Android 2.1 ROM with Sense.Since I switched to KaosFroyo I'm loving Android 2.2 (and missing my HTC sense weather widget,) however it's a good deal less responsive than xtrSense. I turned off JIT because I wanted to go the most stable route, and switched back to LauncherPro.Mostly I notice the reduced responsiveness when typing on the soft keyboard and when switching from portrait to landscape.What's the best way to improve responsiveness in KaosFroyo without overclocking more than "stock?"

The android will flash white on screen, but wont let me proceed with setting up the phone. I wiped and flashed again, and it's doing the same thing. Anyone know the cause of this? So to get me through today i re-flashed Froyo v30 and its running slow as hell, the browser moves incredibly slow and the menus are leggy too. I've flashed it before and had a great experience so i was just wondering if anybody knew what was going on.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with working with the ORIENTATION values of the SensorManager. I would like to have some kind of 360°-value which directly shows me if the phone is in normal portrait (0°), landscape, portrait turned around (180°) or anything in between. So I could have, for example, an arrow that points to the floor (like gravity would do with a plummet) all the time, no matter how I tilt (sidewards) the phone. I thought this would be easy, but I'm pretty confused at the moment.
First of all, the X value of the orientation-array seems to correspondent with how I turn the phone, BUT: if it's completely uprightly standing, this value is about 60° ... why not 0° (or 90°, 180°, 270°), as I would expect?
Second: The value resets if I turn the phone and Android automatically changes screen orientation. So both in Portrait and in Landscape mode it will be sth. like 60° when the phone is in a 0° angel in real world. I set "android:screenOrientation" to "landscape" but this doesn't help anything :/
I want the app NOT to change orientation when I turn the phone, but I want it to get a continuous orientation value when I tilt the phone.
