HTC Droid Eris :: Google Navigator - Battery Usage Tip
May 16, 2010I did some testing with the Navigator yesterday and I have to say it's absolutely awesome. I'm not sure if anyone has posted this, couldn't find any mention of it, but I want to share my battery usage experience with it as well as some other cool things I noticed.
Very cool battery saver:
I used it for a 15-minute drive, keeping it only in the Notification Bar. When you are in the Navigation app, you can press the Home softkey to go back to your home screen. This keeps Navigator working in the background, but it is not drawing the maps and using the screen. You can press the Power button to put your phone to sleep, and the voice actually still talks to you and tells you when to turn. And even better, I started this trip with 76% battery and ended with 76% battery.
Now, the not-so-cool.
I used it for a 30-minute drive, keeping the screen on and letting it show me the map the entire way. I started the drive with 54% battery ended with 34% battery. So definitely keep it on the charger if you are using it for a long drive. But another awesome thing I noticed. I made a phone call toward the end of my destination, just to see what would happen. I used the Home key to back out of the Navigator (but keeping it in the background, as I said above), then made my call as normal. The Navigator still gave me directions while I was on the phone. It came through the earpiece now, so the other person doesn't hear it. How freaking cool is that?

May 19, 2010Searched for a solution to this, but was unsuccessful.I got the OTA on Saturday and noticed that I had a program called "Navigator" and a program called "Navigation".Navigation had a blue arrow icon. Yesterday I had to do a factory reset and now I am unable to find the "Navigation" shortcut.

If I am using Google Maps/Navigator - happily following along as my car wends it's way down the street and I have to exit to say, answer a phone call, look at another app. when I go back into Navigator my destination info is gone. I have to re-enter my destination.

I noticed that about after 15 minutes the phone would no longer be actively charging (the lightning bolt icon in the battery was not displaying). Within two hours the battery was depleted. I know Navigator is still in beta.

May 20, 2010Maps vs. Navigator vs. Navigation. didn't find anything that compared the 3 stock options that the 2.1 OTA gave us. So far I have been using Navigation (the blue arrow icon) and i think it works extremely well, it give voice directions while the program runs in the background and your phone is "sleeping" so thats a big plus for me. I didn't see a voice option on Maps, or Navigator but i may be missing something. Navigator looks cool, but doesnt seem to have any bells and whistles that I need. My wife uses Maps and she is happy with what it does. What are your experiences with these 3 options?

Dec 29, 2009My question is regarding the data sync option, specifically syncing with Google. What exactly (specifically) do background data and auto sync do? I mean if your turn off one and leave the other on, what effect would that have? If they are both off, do the google apps only sync when you open them? Do you have to manually sync the google apps if they are both off? If I was to leave auto sync on, and background data off, would everything still sync in some way? Just looking for some clarification on those 2 options.

I wanted to put the google navigator icon (the blue arrow) on her home screen but could not find it anywhere in her apps. I did find the google navigation (map icon) app and set that up for her. May 17, 2010I have a Droid Eris running OTA 2.1. I just tried using Google Navigator for the first time this morning. When I ran it it led me to install the text to speech app. Unfortunately, I had my SD card mounted (for music in my car) at the time and the install failed. I dropped out, un-mounted the card, manually installed the app, and re-started Google Nav. I have no sound in it at all now. It is not muted, and the nav volume is at max. I have heard it work on my wife's phone. The nav software was my main reason for getting an Android phone. Does anyone have any suggestions or am I going to have to factory reset?

Jun 30, 2010I dropped my phone and the next thing I know whenever I hit the home key which used to take me to the home page like the phone is supposed to do, it opens the navigator app. How can I set the home button back to default! I dont know how this happened.

May 6, 2010Well, I rooted my Eris to 2.1, mainly for the Navigator option, and all seems to be alright EXCEPT Google maps & Navigation. I get a exception message and only option is a Forced Close.
Have tried the Manage Apps-Filter--Do not get option to delete Updates--only choice is to clear data.
If I do that, where will I re download the google maps app?

I did a small search around the internet, and it came up with just about nothing.My first question is: I turned mobile data off, and yet, during the night, I was charged for data, so something leaked.Personally, I thought if this was because of this particular function. But maybe it was something else.So, I turned it off, but around the forums for other androids people seem to think that syncing doesn't work as well with this disabled.Does anybody know what might have happened? And could this function have been the thing that caused the leak.The leak, was actually for only 50 KB or so, but because I'm on Page Plus, it caused me to go under the required balance to refill of $29.95 and caused my plan to lapse. It's important for me for this not to happen again. Can anyone give any tips?

Nov 8, 2009I used the navigation function in the "car home" app this weekend for the first time. The nav. worked great. Voice directions were clear and actually helpful for a change and the gps kept a lock on me. However, I had to make a call to tell my friend I was going to be a little late, only to find out after the call ended that navigation was lost. Luckily, I remembered the address and re-started navigation. So two things, I suppose: 1) Can you easily recall previous destinations? 2) Is there a specific way to make/receive calls while using the app? I noticed if I use use the back button and go through the car app (contacts, voice search) I can get back and forth from nav. to phone pretty well. But it still doesn't seem right.

May 16, 2010I have searched around for an answer to these two issues, but haven't been able to find anything. After doing the manual upgrade to 2.1 OTA, most everything is fine. However, Google Voice and Google Listen are having issues. Google Voice is giving me a Force Close message every time I receive a text message in Hand cent SMS (to my non-GV number). I don't actually use GV on my voice all that often. Google Listen seems to have lost all trace of any of my pod casts, including new ones that have come in since the update. Every episode on every pod cast has, just under the title: "Error (sd card/com.goggle.android.apps.listen/downloads/e55bee71)" The string of letters and numbers on each one is different. I used Astor File Manager to look in this folder and each of those files is not there. Some of these folders were downloaded a month ago (I'm a little slow in getting to some pod casts) and some I have listened to already pre update but still getting the error now. Some that I have listened to are not giving the error. And any that were downloaded after the update are giving the error.

Nov 22, 2009I recently purchased a Droid Eris for my wife. When you start Google Maps on her phone it pins "My Location" as somewhere in Northern India. Additionally, the weather HTC clock/weather widget on the home screen is showing weather for that location. The only way that I can get it to detect the correct location is to turn turn off cellular/wifi location detection and use gps exclusively. I have seen one or two posts on the Verizon forums claiming that the Eris is incapable of determining location using the cellular network and will only work with gps outdoors. I have looked through the forums here but can't seem to find any similar posts. Is anyone else having this problem with the Eris or could it possibly be a problem with this particular phone? I am hoping it is just this phone in which case I can take it back and exchange it for another one. After showing her so many different apps on my Droid that use location detection to give local information, it would be a shame if these will only work outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
