HTC Eris :: Changing Boot Animation - Zip File And ADB Shell

May 3, 2010

I have the VanillaDroid ROM installed on 2.1 v2. My phone is rooted. But I don't like the boot animation that came with the ROM, so I decided to change it. In every tutorial I've seen, people mention a "bootanimation.zip". However, I can't find it anywhere on the phone. But I did find the "bootscreen" folder in "/system/media/" with the bootup animations in it. I assumed that if I swap out the animations for the new ones, it would work (reasonable enough right?). Not really. Apparently, I deleted everything in the bootscreen folder, but when I try copying stuff into it from the memory card, it can't find any directory on the memory card through the "adb shell" stuff.

I know the folder with the bootscreen animations and stuff exists on the memory card, but apparently the shell commands say it doesn't exist. So now my phone boots up with no animation or sound. Its nice to have a quiet boot, and it does seem to start up a little faster, but I want a boot screen again. I know if I reflashed the ROM, it would come back (or at least should). But I don't want to have to reset and redownload all my apps and stuff, especially since I have just got everything the way I want. Is there anyway to get the bootup animations back without reflashing? And if I would reflash, since its the same ROM, would I need to do a factory reset?

HTC Droid Eris :: Boot Animation Flashes

Mar 30, 2010

I created my own boot animation and I am having problems with it. As you can see in the video below, it flashes every time it starts a new folder (part0 and part1) and continuously flashes when it repeats part1. It is not only this boot animation though as I have tried others and they are doing the same thing. If someone could help me with this, EDIT: I have reset to factory settings and tried again to no avail. I don't know what the problem is.

HTC Droid Eris :: Boot Animation Gallery / Extract SDK To Any Directory

Mar 26, 2010

Since people are starting to make their own boot animations now, and this is something that everyone (not just root) can do to customize their Eris I thought it'd be helpful to start sharing them in one place. Also, since the name of the animation must be "bootanimation.zip" I have changed the names to avoid confusion when downloading, but it will have to be changed back before installing.

Installing the SDK and using ADB

1.) Make sure debug mode is enabled:
Menu -> settings -> Applications -> Development, Check the box for USB Debugging.
2.) Download the SDK from Android SDK | Android Developers
3.) Download HTC Sync from HTC Mobile Phone Support - DROID ERIS by HTC (Verizon) - Downloads
4.) Install HTC Sync (This takes care of any driver issues)
5.) Extract the SDK to any directory (C:Androids is easy to remember) and install.
6.) Open a command window (Windows key + R -> Type "cmd" hit enter)
7.) Navigate to your SDK ools Directory

HTC Eris :: Custom Boot Animation - Sound

Jul 22, 2010

I pretty much have the custom boot animations figured out... It seems to work whether I put bootanimation.zip in /data/local or /system/media no problem... but the one thing I can't figure out is how to get a sound to play. I've tried every combination I can think of... boot.mp3 in the zip file, android_audio.mp3 in the zip file... tried the zip without the mp3, just placing the mp3 in the same directory as the zip (and also tried both names that way, in both directories stated above). Is there something I'm supposed to add to the desc.txt file? What am I missing? The only info I can find for the Eris is just "put a boot.mp3 in the zip file" which is just not working...

For some reason I lost the "Droid" sound when I boot. On any rom, stock, Liquid, some other Rom, custom ani's and everything. I think I even lost it when I upgraded to 2.2 non-root. Is there a quick fix for this (don't think I'm confident enought to start mod'ing bootanimation.zip files yet)? Or someone have an ani that I can push that has a confirmed sound with it to just see if I did something wrong earlier?

All I want is the stock boot animation droid word highlighted in neon green like a lot of blue ones I see where it splashes blue with highlights and the red eye turned the same neon green with my name highlighted neon green like the word droid but name will be above the eye. Kind of like this but with my name from sort of beginning to end.

Motorola Droid :: Put A New Boot Animation Which Is NOT Rooted

Jul 1, 2010

I'm trying to put a new boot animation on my motorola droid which is NOT rooted. I found this one particular tutorial on these forums on how to get the new boot animation without rooting. Here it is:

Extract the folder and run Setup. It will ask you to download files, do so.

Next, create your animation--I won't go into much detail about this... all I'll say is the only real specification is that they are .png and they are named in a way that they can be numerically ordered with the first frame being the lowest possible number. Here is the original zip file for the default animation: Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum

If you want just a single looping animation, simply put your frames into a single folder, preferably called "part0". If you have half your animation run once and the other half loop, put those two halves into separate folders--"part0" and "part1".

Modify the desc.txt to coordinate with your frames and folders. Here is a guide on the desc.txt: The desc.txt for boot animations works like this

Using 7zip found here: 7-Zip, create a zip archive of the folders and desc.txt with the compression setting as "store". Name this zip file: bootanimation.zip

Place this bootanimation.zip into the tools folder of the SDK. You can find the tools folder inside of the android_sdk_windows folder you extracted when you downloaded the SDK.

Connect your phone to your computer with USB. Mount your phone by clicking on the USB message in the notification bar. You will then need to run Debugging mode by going on your phone to: Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging. Make sure this is checked; you should get an exclamation mark icon in your notification bar.

Once you are connected, mounted, and in debugging mode, go to on your computer: Start > Run. Type in "cmd" and hit Ok. This will open command prompt.

You need to navigate to the android_sdk_folder from command prompt. If the folder is in your C drive and the letter next to your cursor is different, simply type: "c:" and it will switch to the correct drive. If you are on an XP machine and the folder is on your desktop, you will need to navigate to the tools folder by typing:

cd c:Documents and SettingsuserDesktopandroid-sdk-windows ools

...where "user" is your login name. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE ADDRESS, you can see the full path at the top of the open tools folder. The "cd" before the directory path is necessary--it tells the command prompt to "change directory".

If you have correctly typed in the exact directory your tools folder is in, you should see the entire directory path displayed to the left of your cursor on the new line. Now, you need to push the bootanimation.zip folder to your phone by entering in this line of text:
adb push bootanimation.zip /data/local

Once you hit enter, a second should go by and you should see that a certain amount of data was added to the phone. When you see this, turn off your phone and reboot. You should now see the new animation! You may need to unplug your USB cable before you turn the power back on. In debugging mode, it may display weird menu text when you boot up if you are still connected to the PC.

I hope this helps, I know I was in the same boat as a lot of you, I had to scrounge around to find all this info, don't know why it's not all in one place.

Now I'm stuck at the part where you have to navigate to the android_sdk_folder from the command prompt. I have the folder located in the downloads folder under my C drive. I type in the location of where exactly the folder containing the desired files is, but each time it gives me an error saying " " is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
