HTC :: Desire Takes 5 Mins To Shut Down
Apr 8, 2010
This is my first post, so please be gentle. My Desire takes more than 5 minutes to shut down when I turn it off at night. Is this normal, or is it likely that a rogue app is preventing a speedy shut down?

My desire takes ages to shut down, I'm talking like a couple of hours or more!! the only other person I know with one is having the same problem. I was watching a couple of threads on this subject with various solutions but nothing definative. I'm on Orange, not many apps installed really. This is the only problem i have with my desire, the phone is awesmoe otherwise. I would love it even more if I could turn it off when i wanted to tho

Sitting at home . WiFi in full operation and showing as such on the Desire. If I use my Desire what will it prioritise: My home WiFi connection or the ISP's data connection? Both have strong signals everywhere in the house and both are equally fast. Important to know as don't want any isp billing surprises!

My phone has a really annoying habit. Every night before I go to sleep. I switch it to silent mode. But if a call or a text message comes through overnight it vibrates. The next morning I find that the phone is now in vibrate mode. I did have Foxy Ring installed, although it was not activated. I wondered whether it could have anything to do with this, but I've now removed it from the phone, but the irritating behaviour persists. Short of turning the phone off overnight, how can I get a quiet night's sleep?

When using position based apps on my new Desire (Android 2.1) I can't help but notice that finding the location always takes forever (>1 minute after switching GPS on).My old HTC HD (Windows Mobile 6.1) was much quicker in providing a location after switching on GPS. The trick was, that the HTC HD had a pre-installed application "QuickGPS" that regularly downloaded some data that apparently helped in locating the satellites and/or calculating the position. On my old device I thus had a valid position typically in less than 10 seconds after switching GPS on.I haven't found any similar utility for Android and I don't want to have GPS active all the time for battery reasons. Are there any similar tools or other "tricks" that can help the GPS subsystem to provide the location quicker?

Up to now i have switched it off for 2 reasons. 1. because once it didn't read my headphone being connected, so it needed a restart.2. it was giving no signal at all, whatsoever. On both of these occasions, the phone took as much as 5 minutes to switch off, why? I always kill the applications with multi task, so it cant be the apps that are running.

I have a GPS problem as well, though a different one. It takes over a minute to establish a GPS connection, regardless of software I use (GPS status, Motonav). Is it normal?

My HTC Desire no longer shuts down, I sometimes need to shut down just to help keep the phone working at its best but when I power off the spinning circle just keeps spinning saying shutting down. I have left it for a couple of hours before and its still stuck there, never used to have this problem with my phone when I first got it.I am running an Orange branded phone with Android 2.1. I really don't like this Orange 2.1, its pants and alot slower than a stock 2.1 or the new 2.2.

I have been having an annoying problem whereby my phone takes somewhere between 2 and 10 or so minutes to connect to my car's hands free kit. The handsfree is a factory fit bluetooth unit in an Audi. I've had the car over 2 years and with my previous phones (SE W810i, K750i and C905) the connection was always made within 15 seconds of turning the ignition on. With the Desire it takes so long sometimes that I can have reached my destination before it connects!

I have a factory unlocked HTC Desire with the official 2.2 froyo firmware installed. When I turn on the wifi using the inbuilt HTC wifi widget, it takes about 10-15 seconds before the phone connects to my wifi router and the wifi icon is shown in the notification bar. I am using a Dlink dir-655 router. The settings that I have on the router are as follows:-
wireless mode: 802.11g only
encryption: wpa2 personal AES
mac filtering on (phone's mac address has been added to the list)
SSID is hidden
Other devices such as my laptop and nintendo wii connect to the wifi router within seconds.

I have a branded Desire, with Telstra software. These last few months have seen my desire constantly rebooting itself. This occurs 2-3 times a day without fail. It not only restarts itself, but takes a good 10-15 minutes to fully boot - constantly 're-rebooting'. I have removed ALL after-market applications, removed all data from the memory card, so it's back to how it was straight out the box (with the exception of user data - contacts, messages etc.). I don't feel comfortable with debranding / rooting the phone. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing the restarts, and a possible way around it? There is no definitive process or application involved in the restarts, it is entirely random.

My HTC is really slow! When I receive a new message it takes about 30seconds to even open it, then a further 30 or so to wait for the keyboard to respond. I have tried deleting the messages from my inbox and starting fresh, but am slightly cautious about just giving it a factory reset!
Also, when i am finished a phone call, as I take the phone away from my ear, it flashes on and off, meaning that I can't actually put the phone down! The only way to do it is to take the battery out of the back and start again!
Overall, I'm not very impressed with the phone, its supposed to be suitable for a businessman, but I can't even get it to work as a personal user!
We have 4 other people in the house with the same phone and none of them are experiencing these problems.

With today's unofficial announcement of a new Android 2.2 (Froyo) and rumors about release date (19th of May on Google I/O conference) I just wonder how long it will take HTC to deliver new Android for Desire... or we will stuck for ages as a Hero?

In NYC/Brooklyn my Sprint EVO 3g disconnects when streaming internet radio, like clock work seems to be almost exactly every 5 minutes it disconnects. , Tried 3 different apps, xiialive pay version, Stream Furious free, Ant Player free. Problem persist when streaming any station at various bit rates. Happens when stationary or walking around. Occasionally it will rebuffer and restart the stream which is ok but that is rarely the case. However I can immediately hit the play button it will always reconnect and continue playing. In other words the connection always seems to be there and strong. Seems more like something is bumping it off rather than losing signal. I tried with background data and auto sync off. This rarely happened with my G1 T-mobil especially not when stationary, if the signal was there which wasnt often it would play until i disconnected it myself. The sprint EVO 3g connection seems to almost always be available, much better than the T-mobil was in NYC. however the Sprint data disconnects while streaming audio is driving me crazy. Is there any settings that maybe trying to search for signal and update that maybe responsible for the interruption. BTW this has been since EVO day 1 june 6, internet radio is one of my main reason for smart phone and unlimited data so it was the first or close to the first app i installed. no problem while on WIFI.

What possible reason could there be for you to code your apps so that they switch on in the background when the phone is turned on and use up precious battery life?
Or, why would you code your apps to stay on after I, the user, have hit the back button because I no longer want your app to run?
I mean, REALLY! Yes, I own up to being a newbie Android user, and what I don't know could fill the Library of Congress. Still, this is common sense we're talking about here. I've done some industrial app development and Enter/Exit, On/Off are basic pieces of logic in the main loop of an program in any language.
The only reason that we phone users need task killer apps is because you developers insist on creating apps that don't know when the f**k to turn themselves off.
And, it seems to me like you, the app developers, are one of the main reason why these phones have such crappy battery life. I mean, my Samsung Instinct, as bad as it was, got 18 to 24 hours of life off of one charge. With the Hero, I'm lucky if I can get 10 hours, and that's even with configuring my email download to only three times per day!
This is not hard, people. You code the app to stay off until, I, the user, manually turn it on. AND, you also code it to turn off when I, the user, hit the back button.
Yes, I understand that there are certain apps that it is advantageous to keep running in the background. So, fine, make it so those keep running. BUT, there is no possible reason for apps like Flashlight, or BBC News, or Camera, or SprintTV to have to run all the time in the background!
I am so tempted to just trash the lot of you. If I did, maybe I might not have as much functionality, but my teenager would be able to reach me late in the day because my phone battery would still have juice.

Most digital cameras have in-built an approximation number of photos available on a given memory capacity, or minutes available left, etc. For instance, a 10Megapixel camera with 4Gb might say you have up to 563 pictures available, and so on. Is there an app that would tell the user, how many available photos/minutes of video on a given available SDHC memory space?

I have a Hero on contract with X amount of free mins, unlimited texts and X amount of internet. If I'm sitting in my house and connected to wi-fi through out router does this come off my X amount or not.
Logic says I'm not using the airtime supplier to connect so it doesn't count but something is just niggling in the back of my head saying "watch it".

As an avid user of ADW and Launcherpro, I encountered some problems after the update to 2.2. For instance, If I switch to LauncherPro, and set it as default via "Home Switcher", the next time I hit the home button it still takes me back to Sense. The solution I found is this:
1. You cannot use Home Swithcer.
2. After uninstalling Home Switcher, go to Settings> Applications> Manage Applications.
3. Click the tab to show all, navigate to "HTC Sense", clear it's defaults.
4. Now, the next time you hit Home, it will ask what to do. Select the launcher of your choice and make it default.
From here out, you can use Home Switcher to launch a different launcher, but know that the "Set Default" action will not work for 2.2. You will have to clear default for whatever launcher in order for home to function properly for whatever launcher you choose.

Verizon just switched me this week to a refurb Ally from the Eris (after 4 defective handsets). It takes between 6-8 hours to charge the battery and then with light use it runs back down in 3 hours (by light use, maybe 2 short calls and 4-6 texts). I have checked and it is NOT the 50% signal bug, and I have turned off everything that could be draining the batter that fast. Is this a normal charge time for this device?
