I have justed upgraded to the new OTA firmware, and now I have a new symbol. It's between the mobile strength and wifi symbols, and it's, from top to bottom, a capital L on its side, a / and a filled in square. It's still there with GPS, Mobile and wifi switched off. I can't see it in the manual.

I have been an avid iphone user for the past 2 years, but with having went through 4 iphone 4 handsets and still not happy i decided to make the jump. anyhow, on to the matter in hand, is anyone having wifi signal strength issues? If i'm close to the router. i.e 5-10feet and line of sight, it works fine, with 3 bars. but if i move farther away say into my kitchen, 20ft and through plasterboard walls it will drop to 2 bars. this is understandable, but it will then fluctuate between no bars, to 3, then to 1 then 2, then 3, then..... you get the drift. i can accept strength deterioration with distance, but for it to be so erratic i find it a bit strange. i have changed the channel my router broadcasts on and it hasn't made any difference. other than that very happy with the phone, just getting used to Android. Is anyone else noticing this with their wifi? all my other devices have a constant strength, be it 1, 2 or 3 bars and no erratic behavior. is it faulty wifi, should i sent it back to Amazon for a replacement?? or is it just the way it is?

My signal hovers between -96 dBm and -101 dBm and have had network problems beyond belief. Moto droid sitting directly beside my fascinate typically is ten points better at -86 dBm through -91 dBm with zero network problems.
The wifi indicator sometimes only show 1bar. Meanwhile i sitting maybe 10 feet away from my modem/router. Speed test shows me getting 3200 kbps down and 1200 kbps up.With two bars I am getting 8700 down and 2400 up. I never get 3 bars. Any analysis of these numbers? Are they typical? Anything I can do to achieve 3 bars?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy N1 was sitting on my desk 5 bars 3G and WiFi on. I went to send a text and it failed. Tried a different number and it failed. Tried making phone calls and nothing happened. Turned off the WiFi and noticed I had 5 bars but no 3G or E symbol. I just got a network error when trying to access web pages. I rebooted the phone and it was fine. If this happens I will not know it and miss important calls, sms etc Still got data on the wifi. If this happens again I am going to have to switch back to my trusty iPhone. As much as I want to love the radio software/reception has some serious issues. Based on research on the forums I don't think it is my unit thats faulty esp since a reboot fixed it. I realy hope HTC/Google releases a better radio FW for this device or its going back within the 30 days.

I am building an application reading the signal strength of each available WiFi access point. I've written code like:

However, I have two problems:
In debugging, configs only contains one connection. However, I can see that there are several APs available in the system's wifi setting. i.e. configs is an incomplete list. I don't know how to get the signal strength in Wifi Configuration. I am using HTC Hero and Android 1.5.
I have noticed that my wifi signal strength is crap. I can be in the same room about 4 ft away from my router and my signal strength is 2 bars on my wifi. Also on my 3g coverage I am at 1-2 bars max. When I 1st got my phone never had this problem. Any ideas?

The WifiManager Class provides the RSSI for wifi, but I can't find any for 3G and GSM. If there is no classes provided, is it difficult to start from scratch?
I am virtually unable to get a wifi signal in my house on my droid x unless I am a few feet away from my router. None of my other wifi devices in my house are having this issue. When I check my wireless settings on my dx it says the signal strength is poor. I'm running rooted GB 4.5.602. Does the baseband have to do anything with this (BP_C_01.09.13P)?

If I take my mobile close to router shows very good strength.
Does it mean my phone is constantly uploading or something?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Desire on T-Mobile in the UK. Before updating to Froyo, the signal strength fluctuated between 1 and 4 bars. Since updating, it fluctuates between 0 and 4 bars, even when the phone is just on my desk at home.I did a coverage check on T-Mobile's site and the results for my postcode are "good", which they show as 3 bars out of 5.What could be the reason for the fluctuating signal? I would assume that if I was in a weak signal area for T-Mobile, that the signal would constantly be low. Am I wrong to assume this? I can't understand why it fluctuates so wildly for no apparent reason.

1. Is there any way of getting the home screen to show what network you are currently connected to?
2. I live in Northern Ireland and have a 3uk phone but work near the border between the republic of ireland and northern ireland. All other phones that I have had allowed me to have a 3uk network connection within my workplace, but now with this phone it will not come off 3Irl and sometimes transfers into O2 Irl, which will cost me a lot if I answer. On 3Irl I can receive calls and messages free but it cost to send out.

Issue: Switch on tethering OR mobile hotspot ->mobile network dies
I've installed Froyo on a T-Mobile branded Desire. After the update, turning on USB tethering leads to immediate loss of mobile network - it just turns itself off. Same goes for the mobile Wifi hotspot: turn on -> for 2 seconds, it's working -> mobile network drops off. Moving into airplane mode and back brings back the network, but tethering is a goner. With 2.1, USB tethering had worked. I'm on Base, a brand of e-plus. I've talked to their customer services, they say Base absolutely supports tethering.
I would receive notifications when signal strength changes. I tried to create the following method and call it in the on Create():

I'm having to move networks from Virgin back to o2.
I'll be returning the Virgin Desire and just received the o2 Desire today.
Setting it up went well, accounts added etc. but I'm having trouble with the WiFi - I can't disable it, every time I do it switches itself back on - I'm assuming that's something to do with the o2 firmware and it wouldn't be a big deal if the WiFi worked properly
I set it to install all my apps, but wouldn't over Wifi, only over 3G, I can't browse the internet or check for software updates in settings... I've got 2 email accounts set up - Gmail & Exchange (just as I did on the other handset), and it's just told me it can't sync to the Exchange server now though it seems to have been fine so far...
Yet I've just sent myself a test email over WiFi successfully - it appeared straight away in the webmail and then back on the handset, so some part of it's working...
I am very new to android. Need help from Android Developers. Can anyone PLEASE help me how to find current WiFi signal strength in android. I'm trying very hard to get android to display the signal strength. Also, i would like to know if this works on emulator. If possible please provide sample code. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to find a way of quickly switching off/on the Mobile Network setting from the home screen. When searching Google there's loads of pages stating that it is an HTC Widget that can be added. I have checked all the widgets on the Desire HD and cannot seem to find it anywhere. I am using an unbranded handset.
The Desire HD manual even states "You can also add widgets that allow you to quickly switch on or off certain settings of your phone, such as Wi-Fi, Mobile Network...".
Does anyone else with an HD handset have this widget ?
