HTC Desire :: Why Do I Need To Root Phone?
Aug 6, 2010
Sorry if this is a dumb question but just need to get an idea of why and if I need to root my HTC Desire. Why do I need to root my phone, what's the benefit. I just recently updated it with a download of the HTC Froyo ROM. I've been reading a lot on rooting the phone and most have certain requirements on the version of the HBOOT being version 0.80 or lower. Mine is currently at 0.92.0001 and I can't find a guide that says I can do it for this version. Also I have different values in the software versions.
Android Version 2.2
Baseband Version 32.43.00.32U_5.09.00.20
Kernel Version 2.6.32.15-gf9c0527 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1
Build number 2.09.405.8 CL218634 release-keys
Software number 2.09.405.8
Browser version Webkit 3.1

I have literally just signed up and this is probably in the wrong section but oh well. i have a htc desire and i wanted to connect a wii remote to it. i installed the Wiimote app and then after researching i found out why it doesn't work. This is because i need to root it. what i would like to know is what is rooting?
is it safe to do? if i didn't like it could i turn it back ? and also would it really solve my problem?

I spent over an hour last night try to find out how to root the desire. I found several tuts on xda developers but they are quite complicated i dont mind the effort but i saw how the evo has an app which roots the phone just by pressing a button. What are the chances of this being developed for the desire?

really tempted to root my desire, to get rid of all the Orange branding, and demo apps.
seems to be a few different methods, lekkys, unrevoked, goldcards, which roms, radios...
All a bit bewildering/scary tbh!
so where do I start? which methods best?

I have just done the 'one click root' to my desire (here), and after installing leeDroid's Froyo rom (2.0c) I have lost root access to my phone. This means I cant do a Titanium Backup restore to get all my stuff back. Anyone know of a quick fix? or do I have to roll back and start again?

I've got my Desire for 3 months now. I realy think that I have done the best phone choice of my life. But now after installing/uninstalling/testing many apps I have capacity problems with internal memory. I'm using the method of installing apps directly to the SD. But I always have the low on space notification on my task bar. 75% of what I have installed is on my sd. The rest 25% is HTC Sense apps. My Desire runs on stock froyo and combined with htc sense I have the feeling of perfection while using my phone. Everything run smoothly. No complaints.
So what are my options here? Root? I suppose that I will have to erase everything on my phone memory so I would have more space. If this is the case then I have to ask for your suggestions. a) I will have to stick with launcherpro and I dont like it. No htc sense on non stock froyo right? b) I have many security and privacy concerns for using those roms that some groups have developed. Are they stable as atleast stock froyo? Are they safe? Is there a good phone resources administration? omg 12 mb for adobe flash player on my memory?

I've recently started exploring the possibility of rooting my Desire. A combination of the device's low internal storage capacity and a bit more freedom in general has lead me to this conclusion. However, I'm not sure I have the balls or patience to follow one the guides which seem to involve a lot of technical stuff.I'd basically like to be able to store all my apps on the SD Card and have the ability to remove some of the bloatware. Everthing else can remain the same with regards to HTC Sense etc. I've read about these one-click rooting apps, and these seem like something I would be more confident doing eg. less chance of me making a mistake etc. Do they work? If so, why do people opt for the longer method of rooting?

If it is possible to have root on my current Desire ROM (T-Mobile branded 2.1 update1, Build 1.21.110.4 CL175581 release keys, bootloader 0.80) without having to wipe the phone and install another ROM?
The reason that I ask is that I have read a few reviews about Titanium Backup as that would back up all apps and settings and make my life a lot easier if I decide to debrand and install the stock 2.2 ROM as everything can be reinstalled in a 1 click process. Its the data (email accounts in k9 mail etc) that I am ideally needing saved as those are a pain in the arse to setup again. If root on the current rom cannot be done is there any other app that would save my data as I can save the apks using Astro.

Quick question that will probably turn into a million... can I root and keep my stock Rom? For the moment I don't want to change it, just root the phone. Can I use the one click method through steps 1 - 3 and then just reboot my phone to leave the stock rom ok there? And will I lose everything? I have my back up pro that can help with the back up, can I just restore that after? And will it back up my home screens too? I don't want to go through that process of setting them up again.

I have a Desire from Vodafone (UK) that came with its practically invisible branding. Voda recently put out an update (that I have not installed yet) that would load it up with a bunch of branding bloatware. Word is that when they put out their Froyo update, it will have the same unremovable bloatware. I'd rather not have that.
If I root my Desire (with, say, unrEVOked) and install an official stock Froyo ROM (such as was received by those with completely unbranded Desires), what happens after that? Will I then have an essentially unbranded Desire that receives automatic OTA updates for bug-fixes (and, just maybe, Gingerbread)?
Or will I be stuck with a possibly buggy version of Froyo while waiting for a similar root-method to develop to install a bug-fixing patch?

I fancy rooting my Desire and the instructions seem simple enough, but one thing I'm confused about is backing up my phone before beginning the root process.
All the backup suggestions appear to need "root-enabled" tools to complete; Nandroid etc. So its chicken and egg, I need to root to take a backup, but I want to take a backup pre-root?
Granted, there isn't much to save I suppose as all my emails, contacts and apps are attached to my gmail / app brain accounts.
But what about all my messages in say Handcent, i'd like to keep all those etc. Is this possible?

I'm thinking of installing this app, as the rom that I'm using allows to be over clocked and under clocked, i believe. What i want to know is, what is it all about? i have seen the terms mentioned and all that, but I'm not entirely sure what its all to do with, what will the advantages be? and what is the best way to use it?

I just received a branded o2 desire with an slcd screen and have been reading various forum threads saying that making it unbranded may not work because it has an slcd - people have been getting black screens because drivers were not there? Is there a way to unbrand my desire without causing problems and also would i use the unrevoked method or goldcard? Also would i be able to receive OTA updates (official htc ones not o2 ones) after doing this.

I've decided to try to Root for first time. At first it all worked amazingly. I used the:
DJDroid_v1.6.zip OS and
32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14.zip radio file
A day later, I try to use my phone, swipe down, and get 100 messages saying:
"Sorry! The application com.android.phone has stopped working unexpectedly. Please try again."
I click: Force close, or Report, and another 100 messages pop up.In order to get out of this, I have to take out the battery. The only way for me to make the phone usable again is to re-flash the OS (Good thing i kept all the files on the SD card). I've had to do this 5x in the past 3 days.I'm wondering if it's just the ROM I used, or if I have a virus or something (i assume they exist for the android OS). I haven't formatted my SD card even the first time that I rooted. Think that could be an issue?

I heard that you can un root your desire(rooted) and it can get the updates,is this true?
If so i thought this: Root my desire->get all the apps to sdcard and not on memory-> unroot->profit!
Is this correct, mods?

Having now got used to Android I'm wanting to mess about with my Desire and get it looking really personal.
A lot of people on here completely re design their folder icons using the icon packs. However, can you do this without having to root your phone?
I just don't want to be rooting my phone and would love to make it even more personal.

How to root my HTC desire HD. i begun using custom roms. As there are a lot of roms out there. Some of them I like others I don't. The other day I was wondering about how nice it would be if there was some sort of Emulator voor my pc to try the custom rom. I've heard about the AVD manager (SDK tools) But I don't get my custom roms to work.
