HTC Desire :: Smart - Ultra Keyboard
Jul 29, 2010
So far I've tried Ultra Keyboard on my Desire and have found that it force closed 7 or 8 times during the 24 hr trial and thats pretty poo. So I have uninstalled it and I've found Better Keyboard and someone suggested Smart Keyboard in this forum. I really like the iphone qwerty keyboard and how it works so wondering if anyone else had issues with fc on ultra keyboard or any of these other keyboard apps and what they did to fix it?

I love the Ultra keyboard, but there are so many ways to customize it (a pretty good problem to have!) and a variety of skins in the Market. how you use this, and what skins are your favorite. I also would love a way to type in Spanish occasion, so would love to know if there is an easy way to set up a button or something to switch to Spanish.

Well after flushing down the toilet on Swift key I decided to flush some more on Ultra Keyboard and I can't even express my disappointment enough. What's the deal with these "suggestions"? I go to write a quick text message to someone and when I type in "Hi" the Ultra Keyboard 'suggests' that I meant "Highman". I with there was a way to just have these auto-correct spelling mistakes instead of trying to predict what I'm going to type because they are just terrible at it.

I am wondering if Swype is still available to download and if so, where? I thought it was on Market but guess not. is this free? I have tried Ultra Keyboard that allows you do to typing OR tracing, and tracing seems to be very similar to this Swype concept. Has anyone tried this?

I know Ultra comes with a lot of features. but I ONLY need the "swype" type features. and Money is not really an issue i know SlideIT costs more. which one works better overall for the Swype Features.

Well, this is my first post and as the title states i finally took the step to buy a smart phone and the old Nokia 6120 classic is headed for the drawer.I was tossing up between the Iphone and the HTC Desire. Not really wanting to be an Isheep and after reading all the good reviews of the Desire on the net i decided to go with it. First up i'll address the main point i was worried about..... battery life.
All the people saying they get less than a day with theirs made me worry. But after thinking about my usage compared to others i decided it would hopefully be fine. After getting mine about 5 days ago and charging it up overnight i can say that i didn't really have anything to worry about got through my first day (Friday) with a couple of phone calls, played around with it for half an hour at lunchtime, then probably another hour or two of constant use when i got home playing with the settings, widgets etc. It then continued trucking on till the following day (Saturday) where i played around for another hour or so in the morning until about 11am when it started to get low. That was when the battery warning came up on the screen. So i got about 30 hours out of it on the first charge and by the sounds of some other posts this will get a bit better. Without all the time messing around with the new toy and the battery settling in id say i'll be getting at least 2 days without a charge in the future. I realize other people use theirs a whole lot more at work but i have a radio in my car i listen to on the way to work so no mp3 needed and a phone in the office i use, but if your like me and just a casual user to make a few calls and send a few texts, check the weather out and surf the net a bit it will be fine. I realize that im not using it to its full potential, but thats fine with me. Code...

Ally V8 Ultra Light - Beta 1
8/11/2010
Standard Disclosure: I'm not responsible in any way for the way this performs or functions on your device. If you brick your phone using or flashing this ROM, I will not be held responsible. Also, this is a beta ROM because I haven't been able to test it on more than just my device.
Make sure you do a Nandroid Backup and Wipe data and Dalvik-cache before flashing.
This ROM is based off of drellisdee's Lite ROM. 100% credit goes towards my fellow HTC Incredible user for not only this ROM, but also the first custom recovery and foolproof root method for the LG Ally. Special thanks to him and everyone else that has been a part of the Ally development.
All that I did was remove a lot more applications. It's designed as minimalist as possible so you can just add on your own preferred apps. The list of removed items are listed below. I mostly removed any LG apps as well as the Verizon Wireless startup sound. (Silent Boot!) Also, I removed Calculator because it's one of the few stock apps that can be removed and I usually prefer to just download a scientific calculator from Market.
This also shows exactly how LG designed their software. They changed the design inside some Android system apps (like Contacts, Dialer, etc.) and then threw in applications (like Socialite, LG Home, Home Selector, etc.) In other words, there is no LG UI, we have a stock Android phone. This is unlike Motoblur and HTC Sense which ties certain elements down to the OS.
Also, I'm considering removing the 3D Gallery app, if you guys would like to be able to just load your own from market. Just let me know what you think.
REMOVED

Does anyone know if it is possible to install the stock android keyboard on a HTC Desire running froyo?
I have searched this forum (and others) and have not found anything that has worked so far....
Basically, I think the HTC keyboard is a bit too cluttered, and would prefer to use the default android keyboard (introduced in 2.1 I think, includes a voice entry button to the left of spacebar).

I think it's due to the battery. I recorded a video last night for all of 7 minutes and went from 80% charge to 35% charge. From what I've read from some of our bright EVO owners here I've gathered that better video quality inevitably means more battery drain. I think the phone has been handicapped in these areas because of this. I don't think the EVO could take more battery drain and still be considered functional. I doubt it would make it to 15 minutes of continuous recording on a single charge. Phone would not be good for very much after that. Between FPS and the Camera I think the EVO wouldn't be useable with improvements in those areas, the battery life would be ultra dismal. I think some of the early phones that were having battery problems wouldn't have lasted a couple of hours. I think HTC made them that way to make the battery life acceptable.

I am drawing a pretty simple scene, with one large texture the about size of the screen (two triangles). I notice that the frame-rate is irregular: in most of cases, a frame finishes in 17 ms. However, in about 1 of 10 times, the frame finishes in 33ms.
My guess is probably some background services need to run. However, the Linux scheduler is biased towards my FG app, so the BG services are usually starved, until they can't take it anymore and they grab the CPU from my app ....
I am seeing stuttering in the animation. Is this due to the irregular frame rate? Should I delay each frame so that all frames are rendered with 33ms frame time? If so, what's the best technique of achieving this?
Is there an API that I can call to guarantee CPU resources for the render thread .... I really hope Android runs on some sort of real time kernel ...

I've had problems since the 4th month of this phone and its at a year now. It lost it's wifi back then and I managed to get it back by wiping it a number of times, both factory resets and android type.Other problems have occurred, I've taken care of them along the way. Now, the phone only works if it's plugged in. If it isn't, it goes dead. Shuts itself off immediately without a plug-in charge.
Btw, Samsung never would honor the warranty, citing they" don't replace phones but would "take a look at it" but couldn't "guarantee what they could do for it's software". I've had Samsung phones before and never had problems like this.

Following are details of my Cell --
Model: Samsung Galaxy S Duos (GT-S7562)
ROM: PMP Ultra 8.5.1
Issue:Recently, I switched my s duos from official Stock OS/ROM to PMP Ultra 8.5.1 for better features an usability. As I could see that after installing some apps(~8-10 in count), apps such as Gmail(while opening particular email), Link2SD, Gallery gets shutdown as soon as try to open them.
This issue happens after some time rebboting cell, and persist until next reboot, I could see that I have enough space and RAM available to manage yet more apps.

Some people like screen protectors, some don't. Some enjoy the fact that the Droid's glass is made of gorilla glass. Others are paranoid and rather not take the chance. I am both, so I decided to shell out a few bucks to get a screen protector. And after much reading on these forums, it came down to two types of protectors: anti-scratch (invisibleshield, bodyguardz, etc) or static (boxwave, clarivue). I decided the latter because I like the fact that it can be reapplied and it doesn't interfere with the screen's sensitivity.
I bought a Clarivue ultra-clear screen protector. As mentioned earlier, it is a static clear screen protector so it's washable, reusable, and durable. I chose Clarivue over Boxwave for three reasons. 1. It's cheaper ($9.89 shipped vs Boxwave $12.95). 2. It comes with two screen protectors (Boxwave comes with one). and lastly, 3. Lifetime warranty ($3 shipping and handling added with every exchange).
I should mention that I am in no way affiliated with Clarivue nor am I getting paid to write this review. Just a happy customer sharing my thoughts on this product to help other fellow droid members
So it all comes down to, how is it? Well here's a few pictures for the heck of it.
Also includes a cleaning cloth for your screen before you apply. Note, the screen protector is NOT blue, that's the protective layer on top of the clear screen protector. Also, I just noticed that the screen protectors are upside down. Sorry for the confusion.
I must say, this worked really well. It removed all dust, oils and any marking that I previously had on my screen and dried really fast, so I was able to apply the protector right after.
The application process:
It's easy to put it on. Once the screen is clean, simply remove the first layer on the screen protector (Marked #1), align it to the phone and apply. I used a credit card to get rid of the bubbles. I did it in my dusty room so there were a few particles of dust that got in the way as I was putting it on, so I simply lifted the protector with tape and with another piece of tape wrapped around my finger I gently picked the dust off the screen and protector, then reapplied.
*Tip*Some have shared that it's better to put the protector on while the shower has been running under hot water for some time so that steam in the bathroom knocks off any chance of dust getting in the way of the application process.
Fit:
Width wise, the protector fits perfectly. From border to border, it neatly covers the screen.
Height wise, the protector falls one millimeter short. Some people may like this, some may not. I could care less.
*Note* The screen is not TOTALLY protected due to the speaker cutout. As you'll notice in the picture below, the screen is exposed just above the speaker.
Clarity:
The website states that it offers ultra-clear (hence the name) clarity, and I believe it was 99%. I must say, the clarity surely is there. The screen is still just as bright when phone is on and when the screen is off, I can't tell that there's a screen protector.
Feel:
The protector gives it a smooth glass-like finish. It feels as smooth as it was without it.
Strength:
I'm not about to go start scratching the hell out of the protector to see how strong it is or dropping my keys on it. So as far as its ability to withstand scratches, I cannot mention at the moment. However, the website advertises an "Anti-scratch" feature, but probably not to the degree as the real anti-scratch protectors.
Fingerprints/oils/markings:
Because it is not the anti-glare model, the screen is still very much prone to finger prints, face oils, and other markings. Is it as prone as it was without it? No, but ever so slightly. It manages to decrease the amount of markings, but they are still noticeable.
Satisfaction:
I'm very satisfied with Clarivue's ultra-clear screen protector. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is in search of a screen protector. It fits really well, its very affordable, will keep it your Droid secure for those worried about deep scratches, and it's got lifetime warranty, so there's piece of mind
Final thoughts:
Though I cannot speak for Boxwave's quality of products, I can confidently say that other members in this forums and beyond are extremely happy with that particular brand. It would be great if I could compare them side by side, but I feel as though they would be very similar.
Shipping took 7 business days to California. It was either coming from Washington (Directly north of California) or Canada. I believe it took a longer time because of the holiday rush.
I haven't tried to detach the protector, wash it, and reapply it so as far as that feature goes I cannot comment. But I will try it soon since I've got some bubbles left (stupid dusty room) so I will come back and update on that soon.
If you're thinking about a screen protector, I would highly recommend a static screen protector. It hardly noticeable so you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. I'm confident that those who make this purchase will not regret it.
Lastly, if you're debating whether to get the anti-glare or the clear protector, it's all preference. You'll forfeit clarity for the convenience of anti-glare and no fingerprints. And vice versa. I'd love to try the anti-glare version, so Clarivue is you're reading this, hook it up

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.
