HTC Desire :: Reached Limit On Internal Memory / How To Free Up Space?
Jun 9, 2010
I have pretty much reached my limit on internal space, but while looks at my apps list on which to delete because I don't use I found only two. I was wondering what will happen if I clear data on the contacts storage i.e. will I loose my contacts, and with the facebook. Is there a way of clearing the data not uninstalling apps if so what data does it clear?

So recently I have had my EVO tell me that I am running out of disk space (Internally), so is there an App or a way I can view my internal files and delete them off. I know I can use the Market to delete Apps and I can use the stock Froyo Manage Applications to remove Apps, but I feel that files I download to my phone are going to my internal memory rather then my SD memory. all the help!

I have a problem with my Android phone. I already select an option to install apps into SD card but each installed apps still consume some free space in internal memory. Example: an app size 20 would take 2-5mb in internal memory. Unfortunately, my internal memory is only 222mb.

Now the XT532 (taiwan version) can be rooted, I am interested to know what can be removed. On the internal memory, it states is has 160Mb available of which 95 is already used by the applications on the ROM. So I only have 65Mb available for new programs. I try to move as much as possible to the SD-card, but still i run into the limits very fast. But how do I know what can be removed safely? Also, a total of 160Mb seems quite low for a phone which is listed as 500Mb ROM/ 500Mb RAM. How is that calculated? Is the other 340 all occupied by Android?

How can I find how much free space / memory I have left on my phone? RAM, MB, etc? I just rooted, installed a ROM and learned how to delete bloatware. Now I want to learn how to monitor my usage of space, and try to make my phone faster.

I have free space on the internal memory of my phone that is not recognized for things like installing an app.
This is my phone:
Model: Motorola XT919
Android version: jelly bean 4.1.2
Internal memory: 4gb (really 2,2 gb free since the rest is used by the OS)
Rooted: Yes
I found out about this problem because I was running out of internal space so I inmediately checked the storage settings and I found this:
In the installed apps settings it shows 766 mb free of internal space But in the storage settings the things are different: As you can see, this time I only have 127 mb free of internal storage....
Just to be sure, I downloaded the app Storage Analyser and once again checked the internal storage free space: And this time shows 1,52 gb free...
Well the thing is that my phone considers as free space just the 127mb shown on storage settings, and I want the phone also uses the free space shown on the app settings or the one shown by storage analyser.

How much internal do you try and keep free on your HTC Desire? Do you notice any change in performance if/when the storage space drops beyond a certain point?

I've setup the ext3 partition and it does show the symbolic link to the sd card. Also using quickinfo to check the space of the partitions and internal memory. I tested by installing google earth (20meg) and it seems like it does take space from the a2sd partition but also reduces my internal memory space as well. What or why does it do this? I only have about 110 megabytes left.

33MB worth of data. Obviously all contacts will be backed up in gmail. So I can't lose anything permanently. But will I lose my favorites menu on my Desire? What other hassle will I have to go through if I Clear Data for contacts?

Noob that's had the EVO just a couple weeks and used it to take pics mostly. Got the storage space warning so I offloaded all the pics to my laptop but phone still showing storage space warning and internal memory shows 24.00KB No apps have been installed yet, stock Sprint EVO phone. I'm getting 3 email accounts to the phone and the memory shows email is at 336 megs. Is that what is swamping the memory on this phone? I turned off the emails but the phone won't let me delete all the emails now, I get an error or email has stopped and have to force close the app.

However after getting a bunch of apps from the android market i am getting a warning saying my internal memory card is getting full.when I check under settings, i still have about 20mb left. At what size do i start getting this warning? Its it possible to save apps onto the sd card instead of the internal memory? Also is there a size limit for the number of text messages, i starting getting warning messages for those as well.

Is there any function or even app on the phone that will tell me how much free space I have for apps on the phone? The "free space" number that is in ABout Phone, or in many many system tools type apps is misleading, because that is a combination of the app space and the working memory space. Since Linux loads that up to be more efficient, it will almost always show some relatively low number (30-40MB in my case) as long as the phone has been turned on for some time. In reality, I only have 35MB of apps installed on my phone, so I have plenty of room, it is just hard to tell. So far, the only place I can find that info is on the web-based side of appbrain. Is there any on-phone location where I would be able to get that info? (Short of actually adding up all my apps' sizes by hand?)

Yesterday (which was the last day of the month), I got a message in the browser saying that I had reached my data limit. It would not load anything. It would still access data over Facebook, Twidroid and Sportstrack, but not the browser. Today, all is fine. So, was that message just in error, or does it sound as if I actually hit my limit? I heard around here that they were not really going to be monitoring the usage unless you were on the business plan. I suppose I could find out if I could see my total usage numbers, if I was around the 5 GB mark.

Been thinking of getting a wildfire, it looks like a good phone for the price range I'm in. However today I've read something about the HTC desire that it suffers with a lack of internal memory and this limits the amount of apps available you can store on it (because you cannot store onto SD card) Does the wildfire have the same problem as this, and if it does will it be rectified with the release of froyo?, or is there anyway around it? It seems a shame to have all these apps available on the Android Market but only a limited space to store them on.

I have a list view that display about 25 images with size 60x60 pixels. I dowload this images from internet and I store in an arraylist as Bitmap. I need to save it in a arraylist because a listview will recycle views and so I need, wenn the user scroll, to display the image in the new view WITHOUT downloading again from internet
But after some time I got
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget
It seams that I got this exception about after loading 20 images ...
Reading in forum I have read about memory heap.
I try to check the memory heap usage with: Debug.getNativeHeapAllocatedSize and Debug.getNativeHeapSize()
When the exception occours both are about 4M.
But android has more than 4M?
When the application start the values are a little less to 4M so it seams is not a big memory usage or memory leak.
To be sure I want to call : ActivityManager.getMemoryClass() but this method is and instance method and I can't find the object to invoke!
But this method say, that al min should an application have 16M!
Any help? I have seen many topics in google ... but all speak about recycle. But if I recycle a bitmat ... then should I download again from internet?
Should I store the image on flash memory or sd card instead an arraylist in memory?

How do you free up internal phone memory? When I click on my Quick Settings app, I see that I only have 15% (23mb) of free Phone memory. Is this normal? Maybe this is why my phone is a little laggy at times? Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Maybe this has been discussed, but i don't remember reading it. I've been clearing out my cache regularly to free up memory. But it never occurred to me to delete MMS messages. I just freed up 10 MB of internal memory by deleting MMS messages. I deleted entire threads, and in some cases, individual MMS messages (pictures and videos), because i didn't want to loose the whole thread.

Until Froyo arrives this is an ongoing issue for those of us who have not rooted. I thought it would be useful to have a thread collating tips for managing the space effectively. The phone has 147mb of space available when new. The cut off point for the low space warning in the notification bar is 14mb.When the low space warning shows then you can't install any new apps or update any existing ones. You also can't send any texts.
Here are some tips I have posted for managing space efficiently:
1. Use Astro file manager to back up apps to sd card. You can then uninstall some of the larger apps such as games which are not played frequently. Then if you want to use that app again you can reinstall direct from the sd card in a matter of seconds (even if you have a low space warning).
2. Regularly clear cache by going into menu / settings / applications / manage applications / menu / sort by size. Click on the largest ones such as maps and internet and see if there is any cache which can be cleared.
3. Check email settings. Email will take up much more space if you have it set to download the last two weeks rather than just the last couple of days. You can also set limits on file sizes and number of emails to download.
4. Check settings for any RSS and news feeds you may have. Try and set them to limit the number of items and to automatically clear themselves after a couple of days.
5. Regularly reboot the phone. Sometimes if you uninstall something or clear cache the free space does not appear straight away and only shows up when you reboot the phone.
6. Mini Info is a good widget for monitoring the free space available
I've noticed quite a few posts saying that Facebook and Contacts are taking up large amounts of space. This is not an issue I've had personally as I don't use Facebook. If anyone has any tips or comments on how to manage this effectively then please add them.

I'm running 2.1 on the Cellular South East network. I have received a notification that my Desire since is low on space, but I have over 100 mb of free memory. After a bit of research, I read that I should try to clear application caches. I used the application manager but the "clear cache " button for each application is greyed-out. I then read to wait a minute or so to allow all data to load. I waited 3 minutes, but I still couldn't clear any caches. Why I can't clear a cache?

I am trying to get my environment setup to develop an android app so I downloaded the SDK(http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html). After unpacking the files and running the SDK Setup.exe, the Android SDK and AVD manager opens up.
During the installation process, I got an error stating the following: Failed to fetch URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/repository.xml, reason: HTTPS SSL error. You might want to force download through HTTP in the settings.
So then I proceed to the SETTINGS tab and activated the check box which states: Force https://... sources to be fetched using http://
Then click save and apply. A box flashes on screen, which appears to be the previous box which showed the error, except this time, the progress bar races from 0 to 100% in about a second and then disappears. So clicking the FORCE option seemed to have worked for that issue.
Now, I click on the AVAILABLE PACKAGES tab which is where the Android manager actually downloads all the available resources including every "SDK Platform Android Vx.x" and every "Google API by Google Inc., API x, revision x"
There are green check marks in every check box indicating that I need to download every update.
SO I click INSTALL SELECTED.
The confirmation page comes up. Again, I click INSTALL ACCEPTED.
The INSTALLATION ARCHIVES box pops up and this is where I get stuck. I receive the following errors and I'm not sure what to do from here..
CODE:..................
I did some googling on "No buffer space available (maximum connections reached?)" and apparently it is a socket issue that typically occurs when a database query is called and there are a large number of TCP connections.
But beyond that I'm completely stuck. Can't find anything on my issue relating to Android SDK installation and I don't really know where to turn to continue with the SDK installation.

Yesterday I had 70 Mb of internal memory left, today it's only 55! I haven't installed any apps, and even if I have, not 15 Mb!
So where's the memory being used up? I have seen that if you go into a contact's card, you are able to see his facebook photos in one of the tabs. These are downloaded to the internal memory then?
Does android automatically clear these things?

Went to install Need For Speed shift on my phone a few days ago, but it wouldn't install due to space. I went in and removed a few apps, one of which was my co pilot Sat Nav, which I think was 25mb alone. NFS still wouldn't install so I removed a few more apps. Suddenly my I got a message saying space on phone was low. This did not appear even before I removed apps including co pilot. When I check my memory it says there is 12mb free. It should be a lot more than that with copilot off the phone. So I should have a lot more free than that and should not be getting these messages. Is there any way to get the phone to recheck free space?
