HTC Desire :: Low On Space Notification With Over 100 MB Free
Sep 30, 2010
I'm running 2.1 on the Cellular South East network. I have received a notification that my Desire since is low on space, but I have over 100 mb of free memory. After a bit of research, I read that I should try to clear application caches. I used the application manager but the "clear cache " button for each application is greyed-out. I then read to wait a minute or so to allow all data to load. I waited 3 minutes, but I still couldn't clear any caches. Why I can't clear a cache?

Went to install Need For Speed shift on my phone a few days ago, but it wouldn't install due to space. I went in and removed a few apps, one of which was my co pilot Sat Nav, which I think was 25mb alone. NFS still wouldn't install so I removed a few more apps. Suddenly my I got a message saying space on phone was low. This did not appear even before I removed apps including co pilot. When I check my memory it says there is 12mb free. It should be a lot more than that with copilot off the phone. So I should have a lot more free than that and should not be getting these messages. Is there any way to get the phone to recheck free space?

I have pretty much reached my limit on internal space, but while looks at my apps list on which to delete because I don't use I found only two. I was wondering what will happen if I clear data on the contacts storage i.e. will I loose my contacts, and with the facebook. Is there a way of clearing the data not uninstalling apps if so what data does it clear?

I am running Villainrom 1.0.0 on my desire for just under a week now and since the second day of having the new rom I keep getting "Low on Space" notifications. I've tried to clear all the cache and remove apps that I don't need but still keep getting these errors. My device is only showing that I have 147MB of memory when I thought these devices had 512MB? I've spoken to other non-rooted desire users and they say they have never had this problem. Its a little frustrating that I need to keep removing applications and stuff.

Had my Samsung Moment for about a month. LOVE IT. Few issues (same as everyone else has noticed), but nothing terrible. Until: Randomly today TWO Notifications popped up that said "Low on space Phone storage space is getting low." One was what seemed to be from the "hardware" and the other was from the "Work Mail" app (which I don't use, haven't used, haven't even opened). When I click it, it takes me to the Manager screen. So, I began uninstalling some apps I don't really use (I didn't have that many anyway...a couple of games [Solitaire, etc], Facebook, Notes). It started running really slowly and random Force Close messages would appear for things like android.process, messaging--things that have never Force Closed before. I turned it off (pressed and held the red button), waited a few seconds, then turned it back on again. Immediately after the "Sprint" logo lights show finished, I got another Force Close message. When the Home Screen showed up, I had the two notifications again "Low on space". When I cleared the notifications, only the "Work Mail" one would clear. I went through and deleted some more apps that I don't use. Got on my computer & Googled the issue. Found a couple of random forums that suggested cleaning out the Cache in the Browser. I did that. Cleaned the History & Cookies in the Browser, too. Then, I did a soft reset (took out the battery). Started it up again, SAME notifications. Less Force Close messages. But, it's running VERY slowly.
After a few hours, I noticed that I hadn't received any text messages or Gmail notifications. I had my sister text me about 2 hours ago. Still have not received it.
I really don't want to hard reset. I haven't synced my contacts (I have over 400 & the Sprint store had trouble moving them from my Centro to the Moment) to Google yet, nor have I hooked my Moment up to my Mac yet (the Sprint guys had no idea if it would work or not with Snow Leopard & I hadn't had time to check yet) and I'm worried to try it now that my Moment has gone crazy...I really don't want to lose 400 contacts.I don't download a lot of apps. Most are reputable (Pandora, MotherTED, Shazam, Movies, Jewels). The last one I remember downloading was Google Voice three days ago (which I haven't really used because I've had the flu). I don't know if this is a Malware/Virus issue or if I'm just an idiot & did something wrong. But, it's running REALLY slowly right now. Still not receiving texts or emails (though my Twitter app has notified me of a couple of @ replies).I'm going to call Sprint & Samsung tomorrow, then go to a Sprint tech store if they can't help. But, I'm just hoping one of you have come across this & can help before I have to deal with hours of hold music & techies who tell me to soft reset over & over again.
BTW:
After awhile, I finally checked the storage space:
External SD care: Total: 1.89; Available: 1.85
Internal: About 2 hours ago when I first checked, after I had deleted a bunch of apps it said I had 7.something MB, now (after not downloading ANYTHING or barely even TOUCHING the damn thing) it says 1.95MB. Which leads me to believe that the 7.whatever was not necessarily accurate.

So recently I have had my EVO tell me that I am running out of disk space (Internally), so is there an App or a way I can view my internal files and delete them off. I know I can use the Market to delete Apps and I can use the stock Froyo Manage Applications to remove Apps, but I feel that files I download to my phone are going to my internal memory rather then my SD memory. all the help!

I need to uninstall Ryan's One Click Lag Fix. It keeps telling me "you have only 289MB free on RFS, but 386MB used on EXT2. You must free up some space." I don't know how to free up space. I tried deleting some apps but only the 386MB went to 353MB. the 289 stayed the same.

Is there 748mb free available storage for apps? I have seen a few screen shots, but reviews and reports seem to contradict. If 512mb ROM, most out of box would be less than the 228mb free on Moto Droid, since Android 2.1 takes up more space, due to more pre-installed apps. My guess is there should be about 200mb free IF only a 512mb ROM, or none of the flash is allocated.
Only other option would be if the ROM is actually 1gb. Then the question would be where is the other 1.1 or so gigs of space on the "8gb built-in storage". Should be around 7.8gb free if 8gb is built in. BTW, where IS the "missing" storage space, since 8gb built-in and only 6.6gb shows free?

I have a problem with my Android phone. I already select an option to install apps into SD card but each installed apps still consume some free space in internal memory. Example: an app size 20 would take 2-5mb in internal memory. Unfortunately, my internal memory is only 222mb.

The package installer looks to take up a good amount of space when installing applications. We've published a very large game (ProjectINF - 6mb). And it looks to be taking up a good amount of space during the install process, to the point that we have a lot of users emailing us with complaints/requests to "fix it".
From what we've seen, it looks to take about 22mb of free space to install a 6mb apk. While I can imagine taking double or so for unpacking and temp locations, almost 4x the size seems a bit high. After an install with 22mb free, the device has 16mb free (which makes perfect sense). Users also seem to be getting errors on the market when trying to install with less than that amount of space (with no real clear error message, just "Install Failed".

Ever since I did the OTA upgrade I notice less free space on my device - about 10mb, on average. Even after I dump the cache kept for all my apps, I cant get it down to what it was before the upgrade.

When nandroid does a back-up, it does not error out or warn if the card runs out of space. It will go through all of the back up steps and even produce an MD5 parity check, but it is checking the file created- NOT the actual targeted files as part of its verification process (only the parity of the final file created). I discovered this (almost) the hard way, but noticed that my card showed zero space. The back-up should have been about 850mb, but was 395mb. I removed some files from my sd card and repeated the process and then did a titanium back up of apps.
Shortly after backing up, I tried to install the King #2 kernel and my Inc got stuck in a boot loop. Had I not caught the Nandroid back-up issue, I would have been in a rough situation. The sad thing is I have a 32gb card, but is loaded with PSX games, other game roms and MP3's. Even without this stuff and a smaller card, several nandroid back-ups can accumulate and take up more space than you expect. added: I am not sure if Titanium also does not verify the targeted files after a back-up. In summary: Check you card for space before backing up stuff!

I have a list view that display about 25 images with size 60x60 pixels. I dowload this images from internet and I store in an arraylist as Bitmap. I need to save it in a arraylist because a listview will recycle views and so I need, wenn the user scroll, to display the image in the new view WITHOUT downloading again from internet
But after some time I got
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget
It seams that I got this exception about after loading 20 images ...
Reading in forum I have read about memory heap.
I try to check the memory heap usage with: Debug.getNativeHeapAllocatedSize and Debug.getNativeHeapSize()
When the exception occours both are about 4M.
But android has more than 4M?
When the application start the values are a little less to 4M so it seams is not a big memory usage or memory leak.
To be sure I want to call : ActivityManager.getMemoryClass() but this method is and instance method and I can't find the object to invoke!
But this method say, that al min should an application have 16M!
Any help? I have seen many topics in google ... but all speak about recycle. But if I recycle a bitmat ... then should I download again from internet?
Should I store the image on flash memory or sd card instead an arraylist in memory?

Any ideas on how to free up space without deleting apps? I really like One Click Lag Fix, I don't wanna get rid of it just for space reasons. I was just looking using Root Explorer and there are some massive files in /data/fota. What are they? I have 3 files, fota.status, (Size 36) and fota_delta_dp1 and fota_delta_dp2 both size 62914560. That seems like a lot, I'm guessing it's measured in bytes so that'd be 60 megabytes or so, so 120 total. Are they safe to remove, seems like the results from the over-the-air update.

Now the XT532 (taiwan version) can be rooted, I am interested to know what can be removed. On the internal memory, it states is has 160Mb available of which 95 is already used by the applications on the ROM. So I only have 65Mb available for new programs. I try to move as much as possible to the SD-card, but still i run into the limits very fast. But how do I know what can be removed safely? Also, a total of 160Mb seems quite low for a phone which is listed as 500Mb ROM/ 500Mb RAM. How is that calculated? Is the other 340 all occupied by Android?

Its a 2 gig mem card and i have 1.7 gigs left on it thats completely free. And my phone has 99mb of internal memory free. So a few hundred kb ringtone should not be saying this.

Is there any function or even app on the phone that will tell me how much free space I have for apps on the phone? The "free space" number that is in ABout Phone, or in many many system tools type apps is misleading, because that is a combination of the app space and the working memory space. Since Linux loads that up to be more efficient, it will almost always show some relatively low number (30-40MB in my case) as long as the phone has been turned on for some time. In reality, I only have 35MB of apps installed on my phone, so I have plenty of room, it is just hard to tell. So far, the only place I can find that info is on the web-based side of appbrain. Is there any on-phone location where I would be able to get that info? (Short of actually adding up all my apps' sizes by hand?)

My application allow to download files and store them on the external card. To avoid filling it, I've implemented a safety check so it prevents downloading when the free space is less than 20MB. The computation of the free space is done by:
public synchronized long getFreeSpace() { if (statFs == null) { statFs = new StatFs(getExternalStorageDirectory().getAbsolutePath()); }
return statFs.getAvailableBlocks() * statFs.getBlockSize(); }
which I presume is correct. In fact, it works in all my tests and for what I can say for the 99% of users. But a single user notified me that my app is constantly giving the "card full" message, as if the above method didn't work. He also told me that the problem went away after a while, and returned after upgrading a new release of my app. The user seems an advanced one, and I think he's able to check and correctly manage the contents of his external card. He reported that the card has more than 1.4GB free on the card. Are you aware of any specific issue or bug? The smartphone of the user is a Dell Streak with Android 1.6.

So I flashed Fresh .5 over MocaDo 1.1 and the force closes stop. The phone feels a lot zipper. I have WiFi tether. Spare parts is great. Now how do I move apps to the sd card to free up more space?
