HTC Droid Eris :: Free Internal Storage Space For Applications?
Apr 26, 2010
Is there any function or even app on the phone that will tell me how much free space I have for apps on the phone? The "free space" number that is in ABout Phone, or in many many system tools type apps is misleading, because that is a combination of the app space and the working memory space. Since Linux loads that up to be more efficient, it will almost always show some relatively low number (30-40MB in my case) as long as the phone has been turned on for some time. In reality, I only have 35MB of apps installed on my phone, so I have plenty of room, it is just hard to tell. So far, the only place I can find that info is on the web-based side of appbrain. Is there any on-phone location where I would be able to get that info? (Short of actually adding up all my apps' sizes by hand?)

I have not installed anything, not even an OTA update (except PRL update) and this is what it says for SD card and Internal Storage space. It comes with 1GB internal storage, so the base OS and TouchWiz used over half of the internal storage already along with over 1GB of the sd card?
sd card total space: 14.73GB
sd card available space: 14.73GB
internal storage available space: 465MB

I installed a bunch of apps and I think the EVO has 1gb of space. Just wondering if that's enough available for me to do other things. I want to leave a "buffer" just in case. I'm currently using the Sandisk 8GB MicroSD Class 2 that came with the phone and when I was looking at selling my Touch Pro 2, it turns out that I have a Class 6 Transcend 8gb MicroSD card. I want to switch them out, if I just copy everything from the Sandisk to the Transcend, will that be ok? Or do apps/Android write the data a certain way that I'll have to re-do things again?

Until Froyo arrives this is an ongoing issue for those of us who have not rooted. I thought it would be useful to have a thread collating tips for managing the space effectively. The phone has 147mb of space available when new. The cut off point for the low space warning in the notification bar is 14mb.When the low space warning shows then you can't install any new apps or update any existing ones. You also can't send any texts.
Here are some tips I have posted for managing space efficiently:
1. Use Astro file manager to back up apps to sd card. You can then uninstall some of the larger apps such as games which are not played frequently. Then if you want to use that app again you can reinstall direct from the sd card in a matter of seconds (even if you have a low space warning).
2. Regularly clear cache by going into menu / settings / applications / manage applications / menu / sort by size. Click on the largest ones such as maps and internet and see if there is any cache which can be cleared.
3. Check email settings. Email will take up much more space if you have it set to download the last two weeks rather than just the last couple of days. You can also set limits on file sizes and number of emails to download.
4. Check settings for any RSS and news feeds you may have. Try and set them to limit the number of items and to automatically clear themselves after a couple of days.
5. Regularly reboot the phone. Sometimes if you uninstall something or clear cache the free space does not appear straight away and only shows up when you reboot the phone.
6. Mini Info is a good widget for monitoring the free space available
I've noticed quite a few posts saying that Facebook and Contacts are taking up large amounts of space. This is not an issue I've had personally as I don't use Facebook. If anyone has any tips or comments on how to manage this effectively then please add them.

I have a Motorola Droid that isn't rooted. In the last few weeks I've had problems with dropping free space on internal storage. I'm around 30MB free but it drops almost daily. I have deleted pics and text messages and have started deleting apps but the free space keeps dropping. Is there some way to figure out where this space is going or monitor for changes?

Recently, I have noticed that my android phone keeps telling me I have insufficient storage. So, I start deleting most of my apps, except for Facebook, Viber, Whatsapp and the pre-installed apps. However, in my apps section, it shows I have used up 863MB whereas in the storage section, it says I have used up 213MB. Funny thing is, Facebook, Viber and Whatsapp are all installed in my SD card. I have to force stop my Facebook app and clear the cache files in order to use my phone.

So recently I have had my EVO tell me that I am running out of disk space (Internally), so is there an App or a way I can view my internal files and delete them off. I know I can use the Market to delete Apps and I can use the stock Froyo Manage Applications to remove Apps, but I feel that files I download to my phone are going to my internal memory rather then my SD memory. all the help!

Here is a screenshot of my Nexus 7's memory using the app "DiskUsage". Is it just me or does 7 gig seem like a lot for the system data. I'm running mmuzzy's rom which is pretty vanilla. I'm CONSTANTLY struggle with getting a low memory error and was wondering if there's something screwing me over.

I have a problem with my Android phone. I already select an option to install apps into SD card but each installed apps still consume some free space in internal memory. Example: an app size 20 would take 2-5mb in internal memory. Unfortunately, my internal memory is only 222mb.

I have an Xperia Play.
However, I am always running out of space on my internal storage...but I don't know why.
I am rooted with with both Titanium & App2SD installed.
I have very few apps installed and nearly all of them have been moved to my SD card. Yet I only have around 40mb free on my internal storage (from a total of 400mb).
I cannot figure out what is using all of my internal space. I have looked in Titanium at apps using my interal storage and it does not even come close to the 350mb it says I am using.
What could be using all this space and is there any way to find out for sure?

Now the XT532 (taiwan version) can be rooted, I am interested to know what can be removed. On the internal memory, it states is has 160Mb available of which 95 is already used by the applications on the ROM. So I only have 65Mb available for new programs. I try to move as much as possible to the SD-card, but still i run into the limits very fast. But how do I know what can be removed safely? Also, a total of 160Mb seems quite low for a phone which is listed as 500Mb ROM/ 500Mb RAM. How is that calculated? Is the other 340 all occupied by Android?

Good morning all, I'm new to the forums, android and smart phones in general so please bare with me. I've been lurking for the last two months and following some real solid threads (mostly stuff on task killers and 2.1 updates,) and trying to take the great advice that I see on here. I'm by no means a power user (I don't even use social networking of any kind, mostly using music apps like pandora and last.fm) so the notification that I received this morning kinda threw me for a loop. I got the low on space/no more storage for sms/mms notifications. I guess my first boneheaded question..what the heck is an sms/mms. Second, what can I do about this?
I stopped running a task killer based on the topics I've read about it and I've been hitting the back key to get out of everything. I checked the internal phone storage (368k available, was 0 but I removed a sound board app). I've also gone through settings> apps> manage apps to see if anything was hogging up internal storage and everything seemed to be closed (mail aside). HTC Mail does seem to come up first when I sort things by size and its the only one that gives me the option to force stop. Other then that, the only performance issues I've noticed recently (esp since I stopped using the taskkiller) is the menu key seems to lag a moment before it registers and the phone key does the same. I wouldn't say my phone is screamingly fast but it gets the job done for the most part. Anyone have any thoughts on what I should do?

I have pretty much reached my limit on internal space, but while looks at my apps list on which to delete because I don't use I found only two. I was wondering what will happen if I clear data on the contacts storage i.e. will I loose my contacts, and with the facebook. Is there a way of clearing the data not uninstalling apps if so what data does it clear?

Without going crazy, I've searched the forums and haven't found many topics to address this. Apologies in advance if such topics, in face, exist.I've had my Eris for nine months, and I've never really messed with the Gmail app/storage settings much. But I'm noticing that it's taking up around 50MB of storage on the phone. I have it set to sync 2 days. I have five labels that get synced. My Inbox, and one other label, are set to "Sync all;" the other three labels are set to "Sync 2 days."Any time I try to change the settings or how many days to sync (like changing everything to 2 days, or 1 day), it winds up eating more of my phone's internal storage, but for an app to use a third of the total storage seems a bit extreme to me. My Gmail app is showing 332KB, of which, 52KB is data and 280KB is the app. There is no option to clear the cache. I can Manage Space or Clear Data, though. My Gmail storage is showing 49.89MB, of which, 276KB is the application. There is no option to clear the cache or manage space, only clear the data. Also, while I'm on the topic, is there any reason for the discrepancy between how much space the Market says a given app occupies, versus what the phone says? Example: The Market says Maps uses 4MB, or so. My phone shows it occupying twice that much space. Facebook is allegedly 1.5MB in size, but it takes up four times as much space on the phone. There is no cache to clear, and I have everything disabled that can be disabled. What's using up so much space in these apps?

I installed firefox mobile (alpha version) just to test it out, but I can't for the sake of it find it on the phone. Tried install it again and it says it was successful. Still nothing, and I find nothing when I try to uninstall it. The phone says it got 56MB left of internal storage. Have I just spent a great deal of the internal memory installing a "ghost app", and how can I get rid of it in that case? I don't have that many apps on the phone.

I was wondering what people have for Available space in Internal Phone Storage. I believe that has to do mainly with how many apps you have installed, although sometimes (since updating the other day) the number seems to change when I don't delete or download a new app. Maybe I'm going crazy. Anyway, my available space is 53.61MB

Ever since I did the OTA upgrade I notice less free space on my device - about 10mb, on average. Even after I dump the cache kept for all my apps, I cant get it down to what it was before the upgrade.

Been thinking of getting a wildfire, it looks like a good phone for the price range I'm in. However today I've read something about the HTC desire that it suffers with a lack of internal memory and this limits the amount of apps available you can store on it (because you cannot store onto SD card) Does the wildfire have the same problem as this, and if it does will it be rectified with the release of froyo?, or is there anyway around it? It seems a shame to have all these apps available on the Android Market but only a limited space to store them on.

About a week ago my phone inexplicably stopped being able to download from the Market. No reason is given, the thing just stalls at the 'starting download' screen. Today, nearly a week later it's finally given me a clue what the problem might be. A notification icon appeared, claiming that I'm low on internal storage. I clicked on the message thinking that it would take me to something useful like a file manager, but no such luck. It took me to the application manager to, I assume, remove some apps. I've got nothing to remove. The only two extra apps I'm running right now are 3G watchdog, Twitter, and Kindle.
As far as I know not much is being stored internally, but is there anyway I can find out what is being stored - I can't find a file manager anywhere. The only thing I can think of is messages might be clogging the thing up (text and mail) I have a mail widget running but it only picks up 1 day's mail at a time - are the messages stored on my phone or are they simply viewed on the server. I also have a few hundred text messages stored, but I can't imagine they would take up that much space?
