HTC Desire :: Phone Turned Off And Then On / Emergency Calls Only
Aug 4, 2010
I don't know what to do. I tried to make a call this morning and it kept disconnecting, even though it was showing signal. So I decided to turn it off. This took over 15mins. Finally it went off. I switched it back on to find it will only make Emergency calls and I don't know why.
I've turned it off multiple times now, even taken the battery out etc and nothing works. Its been very slow the last couple of days, and frozen a couple of times. I've only had the phone 3 weeks from new (T-Mobile!)

Let's start from first: I bought a t-mobile desire from someone. when I got it, it was rooted and an official htc middle east rom flashed on it (...and unrooted). Both seller and me have a local sim card (Not t-mobile) but it worked for him and not for me.It displays a "Limited Service", "Emergency Calls Only" message. when I search for operators it list my operator but when I choose that android can't register on it.
1. I rooted it again and flashed LeeDroid rom on it but no success
2. Seller did a hard reset before giving it to me (I guess it generated the problem)
3. Sim card is correct
4. Seller is not scam!

When I have data turned off on the phone, at the top of the notification area it says "Emergency calls only". I don't have any problem making calls so I don't understand why it says this.

I've been having signal troubles with my Hero since I had it 3 months ago. Ive been reading on here and just put it down to the antenna being in the 'chin' and the radio version Orange UK have supplied with their firmware being buggy. Over the past two days I have noticed that upon picking the phone up, it displays 'Emergency calls only' and will not pick up signal until rebooted. It has now done this twice. I have checked the sim card and all seems fine but i have noticed there are more gold 'prongs' on the phone that there are on the sim card. If I look carefully, the last prong on each row sits on a plastic bit of the sim card. Is this right?

I am posting this in hope that the Android developers take notice of an extremely frustrating problem I experienced today and that the problem is fixed with the next operating system update.Earlier today, I was in a car accident. I picked up my phone to call the police and decided to use the Emergency Mode because entering my password was just too much, given the mental state I was in. Well, I placed the call to the police, hung up, and then wanted to phone a friend of mine to come meet me because I was so distraught. I attempted to make the phone call using contact info stored on my phone. The phone wouldnt let me place the call, alerting me to the fact that the phone was in "Emergency Mode". So, I proceeded to push the button on the top of my phone, which shuts the screen off. Then, I pushed it again to turn the screen back on. I was given the option to either enter my password or, again, use Emergency Mode. This time, I entered my password, unlocking the phone. But, much to my dismay, I was still not able to place the call to my friend. The phone continued to indicate that it was in "Emergency Mode". I repeated this several times, each time re-entering my password, to no avail. The only way I was able to place the call was to pull the battery on the HTC EVO. This was quite frustrating, considering the state I was in just after the accident.

I have had my desire HD for a week and although very impressed it started to shut down prematurely even during phone calls, I did a factory data reset and all was well for a day then started shutting down again for no reason. Has anybody experienced the same thing and is there affix or do I need to send it back?

I used my phone with no problem yesterday (made and received calls), then went to sleep and charged my phone overnight. When I woke up this morning, I tried to make a call and just got "this number is not in use", thought it was something to do with that persons number. Tried to call some other numbers and always got the same thing. I asked my brother to call me and it just went straight to voicemail. Then, when I opened "Phone" I noticed that there was something wrong with my last few calls made. Phone numbers here in Iceland are 7 letters, for example 1234567.. but all the recent calls I made looked like 6171234567, that 617 always got added before the number I tried to call and that made it fail. I only see 1234567 when trying to make the call, when I look at the phone while listening to "This number is not in use", I never see that 617 until I've hung up and check the call log. I did try to call +3541234567 though (354 being the Icelandic country code) and that went through fine. But if I don't use it, the 617 gets added. Has anyone ever experienced this problem? I thought it might be some setting so automatically add a country/area code before a number or something like that, but didn't find anything in settings.

I have connected the Nokia BH-905 to my Desire both phone audio and media audio. Unfortunately when placing calls the phone does not switch to the headset to make calls. Am I missing an additional setting to switch from the phone's mic and speakers to my the connected bluetooth headset or is this a bug in the software?

I installed VoiceSearch_2.1 and HTC_IME mod successfully. The voice to text works great! However I can't seem to make the Phone Call functionality work. When I long press the search button and use the command "Call <name>" where <name> is someone in my list of contacts (People) e.g. "Call Home" it recognises the words correctly but all it does is bring up a result screen from a Google Web Search. Am I doing something stupid?

A few times, when I've received a call when my phone's been in my pocket, I've accidentally rejected the call when removing the phone from my pocket i.e. I've inadvertently made the screen gesture that cancels the call. Has anyone found a way of modifying the call answer / reject options to avoid this situation?

So there's this problem with my Desire, I can call and receive calls and everything. But once I'm in a call, the standby button will not turn the screen on, and no matter how many times I button mash all the soft keys, I get no response. However if my phone is feeling good, it'll show me the screen for a split second before hiding it again! This is a huge problem, I have no idea what the problem could be, as the standby button works fine when not in a call.. Anyone know what would be the reason? (Keep in mind, my HTC is literally a day old in my hands).

I had a moment of paranoia in the theatre recently. I turned phone off, couldn't remember if I'd turned the phone off, then realised the only way to check the phone was off was to press the button at the top, which if the phone was on would bring me to the screen unlock thing... but if it was off, would turn it on. Is there a way to check its 'offness' without turning it on?

This is my first post and it comes with some questions:
First and foremost at random times my 3G is turned off even though I haven't turned it off...go into the setting and it says its still on. Only way to turn it back on is to turn it off and then turn it back on? Any ideas just a problem with the phone maybe. Didn't know if anyone has encountered this problem
Second is there and application that I can use that will let me select what things will startup with a reset of the phone? Also is there an easy way to reset the phone without a battery pull? I just like to do this when Unistalling apps and installing apps...always seems faster after downloading or Unistalling after I do this.

I just got my desire and was downloading/syncing etc., and wanted to make sure I did it over WiFi rather than 3G but couldn't seem to get that to work or wasn't sure if I had. I tried flight mode like iphone but that seem to turn off WiFi too - so then tried normal mode and mobile network set to off - this seemed to leave the signal bars showing, so phone not actually off - so does that mean that data is off?

I was wondering if there's a way to stop mobile data being turned on when wifi is turned off? I usually have mobile data turned off (using Extended Controls widget) to conserve battery and I use wifi most of the time, so it's very annoying that mobile data comes on every single time I turn wifi off.

MY SITUATION: My phone was rooted with unrevoked3. I tried to install one of the modaco ROMS and did not realize that it was incompatible with my phone because my Desire has a newer type of screen (not amoled) but SLCD. This caused the phone screen to go black on start up and be unresponsive. It was frightening because at first the HTC bootscreen (green HTC on white) had black streaks through it , then goes black. But don't worry it is easily redeemed in below instructions. You need the latest ROM in zip form, put onto your phone and run recovery. Sweet as suzi, you will be debranded (if you were in the process of doing this , remember to make your gold card).
ISSUE:
1. Desire screen not switching on at all even though phone switches on.
2. Phone boots but doesn't go beyond bootloader/recovery/fastboot
3. Can get into recovery even though nothing comes on screen (test: press volume down and power. Wait for 10 seconds. Press volume down. Press power. Phone should vibrate. Wait 20 seconds. Phone should now be in recovery mode.)
4. Can get into fastboot (back+power)
5. No goldcard
CAUSE of ORIGINAL AUTHOR'S ISSUE:
I had Aura Sense7.9+AlphaRev S-Off. Cause::Ran a very old RUU just because I wanted to bring things back to stock. The RUU overwrote my HBOOT from 0.93 to god knows what. Turned out, the RUU was for amoled screens and not for SLCD screen. So even though the phone turned on, the screen never did......

Back when the Evo first came out, it was possible to turn off the Sense UI and use the stock Android. This option was deleted after the first update. Does anyone know if the option has been restored with the Froyo update?

I've just started having a problem with my MyTouch 4G in which it won't charge while the phone is switched on. The battery charging symbol displays but the battery % slowly decreases. I have tried using a different battery but no luck. If I go into "battery usage" in settings it says that Wifi & Cellular Idle are the 2 biggest users with 29% each. The strange thing is that these 2 are always using 29% even if I turn Wifi off and put the phone on flight mode. Another user had a similar problem and it turned out to be an app using buttloads of power but I can't identify any on mine doing this. I've done a virus scan.

I am am recent migrant from Blackberry. One of the nice things on the BB was that when you set the alarm, you can switch the BB off overnight and be sure that at the set alarm time, the BB wakes and the alarm goes off. The alarm on the HTC Desire does not seem to do that - i.e. when I turned it off overnight it did not wake when the alarm should have gone off. I tried a couple of other alarm apps and no luck. Is there an alarm app for my requirement? Or is this not possible with an Android phone?
