HTC Desire :: Keyboard - Special Character In SMS (Compatibility Warning)
Jul 6, 2010
I have a SIM free Desire and I am on Orange. When I include sign in a text, I get a message on the screen saying "Compatibility Warning - your sms include some special character (RED BACKGROUND), if you send it from t-mobile to other carriers, it will cause the message can't go through". Can anyone tell me how I can include sign in a text without this message appearing every time.

I would like to make an Android application that user enter the number they would like to dial, and the app automatically format the number into *123*number# (that means the final number would contain 2 special character "*" and "#". Could you please help me how to let Android understand these special character and make the phone call in the right direction.

I'm looking for a third party app/keyboard that features the | character; that straight up and down vertical line character. I need it to log into my email, but the stock keyboard doesn't seem to feature it. Anyone have any good ideas?

I'm compiling using android tools without eclipse.
I compile launching "ant debug" from command line.
I have found many many instructions around the web about how to remove with annoying warning, but I haven't been able to make any of them work.
I've tried -D option, I've tried randomly tweaking build.* files, I've tried exporting an environment variable... nothing.
I guess some of these methods just don't work, and some others would work but I've been doing them incorrectly. Anything is possible and I can't stand it any more: any advice on how to do it?

When writing using the keyboard I can not seem to find the way to insert special characters none are available when I click symbol key.
My dictionary is in spanish, but the phone main language is set to english; is this the problem?
If so, it should not be. Messaging should use dictionary and not phone language.
also, is there really a need for limiting character counts when using special characters? (YuS it needs more info, but doesn't the Standard for character representation take care of this)

I'd like to invoke the Android onscreen keyboard to just retrieve a single character. Is there a way to do this?I am working on a hangman application and need to take input one character at a time. The plan is to have a text area for each guessed letter, and display the soft keyboard when the user selects a text area for which to guess.

I've been testing my application on a HTC magic and it's incompatible with the keyboard that ships with the magic. My application allows the on-screen keyboard to be displayed when the user clicks on icon on the screen. When using the emulator the way that I determine that the keyboard has been hidden is through responding to the KEYCODE_BACK keyevent. On the HTC keyboard there is an additional key that allows the keyboard to be hidden. When this key is pressed the keyboard is hidden but no KeyEvent is sent to the application with the result that the application is now out of sync with the keyboard state. In general is there a way to detect software keyboard hide / show events in a non-vendor specific manner? This would be highly useful for any application that is implementing custom views.

I have a TextWatcher set on an EditText that changes the input type after a user types a number followed by a space. If the user types two numbers the input type switches and accepts the next character, but if the user types only one number and presses space the input type still changes but it won't accept the first character the user tries to input. I've tested this on Froyo and 1.6, it only happens on Froyo, 1.6 works like it should.
Here's the code:................

I'm using Intrumentation to invoke keystrokes and mouse events, but I have a problem when trying to do so on the virtual keyboard. If the virtual keyboard pops up and I want to send a mouse event to click on a character of the keyboard, I get that error/warning in the console:
W/WindowManager( 586): Permission denied: injecting pointer event from pid 1580 uid 10020 to window Window{437522d0 InputMethod paused=false} owned by uid 10003
Is there a way to make it work? I know I can't do instrumentation on native activites, does the native keyboard acts like a native activity?

I would like to upgrade my iPhone to the Desire, but I am concerned about syncing the phone with my PowerBook G4 running Mac OSX 10.4.11. I have read about syncing contacts through Gmail so this doesn't seem to be a problem. But my real concern is loading my music, podcasts and movies from iTunes onto the phone. Is this possible with OSX 10.4.11? Will my computer even recognise the Desire? I have read that other Android phones haven't even been recognised when connected via a USB cable. Has anyone synced the HTC Desire & Android 2.1 with a Mac running 10.4.11? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I really want to get the phone!!

Am I missing something or is there not a character counter for when you are composing text messages on the standard Desire text message app? If there isn't one - is there a recommended alternative solution?

I have the htc desire and for the past couple of days it hasn't had any signal, I just get the limited service message, this is regardless of where I am (I live in a large city as well!) I have tried both soft and hard resets, leaving it switched off for large periods of time but all to no avail. I know I should have signal since my old phone is on the same network (vodafone) and gets signal absolutely fine.

if HTC Incredible/Nexus batteries are compatible with the Desire? I think i've seen some mention of people using Nexus batteries and as long as it's the standard capacity it should fit right? Whilst I doubt the capacity is as good as the official HTC ones you can get a charger and two 1400mah batteries on eBay for the price of a single Desire battery here..

I've got the supplied 4gb card in my phone but I am thinking of upgrading to a 16gb one. In the past every other phone I have put a larger card in (most recently a blackberry curve) slow down massively when a larger card is put in (in the case of the blackberry 1gb to 8gb). Does this happen with the desire? If so is there any way to stop it as I want the storage but don't want to lose the performance?

I've been using my HTC Desire without a problem but for the last couple of weeks I have been getting unable to send notifications when sending texts. This can be almost instantly after hitting the send button. I'm on three. My friend has the same handset and he is on oange and is getting the same thing so is this a handset thing or are we both doing something wrong. If you leave the desire to do it's stuff it will send it. On other occasions it goes no problem.

My HTC Desire was running well but I've developed a really irritating issue which seems to have started since the Froyo update (O2). Quite often when I send text/sms messages I get the Unable To Send error warning in the top left of the main screen. At first I was hitting the Resend option all the time but it keeps coming back and I noticed that if I check my text messages All Messages box then the message has actually been sent, yet the Unable to Send message persists until I use the Clear option. Has anyone else noticed the same thing?

Does anyone know if it is possible to install the stock android keyboard on a HTC Desire running froyo?
I have searched this forum (and others) and have not found anything that has worked so far....
Basically, I think the HTC keyboard is a bit too cluttered, and would prefer to use the default android keyboard (introduced in 2.1 I think, includes a voice entry button to the left of spacebar).

I've been looking to swap out the HTC Desiree's keyboard for one with voice search in it. I installed Verizon's keyboard 2.1 but can't find a way of enabling it. I think it appears as 'Android Keyboard' under MENU > SETTINGS > LANGUAGE & KEYBOARD, but even although I ticked the box to use it, it still doesn't appear, defaulting to the HTC one instead.

I tried it and it works so far.
Dev = ne0fhyk from XDA.
From the XDA forum: Link to app page = [APP][ROOT/Keyboard] Keyboard Manager - Dual keyboard: Portrait/landscape switch - xda-developers
Verbage:
Keyboard Manager allows you to customize what keyboard (input method) appear on input based on your phone orientation.
It displays the keyboards you have enabled on your android device, and let you select one per orientation (landscape/portrait).
As your phone switch orientation, the app automatically switch the keyboard.
Requirements:
- Rooted android device (app was tested on Samsung captivate 2.1)
- Root Explorer app, or similar app that allows you to edit the permissions of a file.
To install:
1- Download the app (KeyboardManager.apk) on your device sdcard.
2- Using Root Explorer, move the apk file to /system/app
3- Using Root Explorer, edit the file permissions like below:
-- User: 'Read/Write' checked
--Group: 'Read' checked
--Others: 'Read' checked
4- Exit Root Explorer
The app should be visible in your launcher as 'Keyboard Manager'
Update:
- Added option to disable notification icon
-' start on boot' feature is disabled because it's not yet complete and tested... Sorry for the confusion
Bugs:
-On certain applications (i.e: Messaging on Samsung Captivate), the input window occasionally freeze on orientation switch. Exiting the app, and resuming should fix it.
The app is still in development.

I've tried a bunch of roms but what so special about sense roms from the stock sense besides the fact they remove sprint bloatware and add a theme? I've tried fresh and myns etc. They just are basically stock sense with a theme and a different launcher and some added apps. I don't notice any special feature and people are saying how great they are but I am missing something cause they arn't much different.

I have a list with some Belgian cities with accentued ( is that the right english word?) characters: (Liège,Quiévrain,Franière, etc.) and I would like to transform these special characters to compare with a list containing the same names in upper case, but without these characters ( LIEGE, QUIEVRAIN, FRANIERE) What i first tried to do was to use the upper case: LIEGE.contentEqual(Liège.toUpperCase()) but that doesn't fit because the Upper case of Liège is LIÉGE and not LIEGE. I have some complicated ideas like replacing each characters, but that sound stupid and a long process.
