HTC Desire :: How Bad Is Screen In Sunlight / Visibility Level While Out
May 16, 2010
How bad is Desire's screen in sunlight? Read this problem at many places. What's the visibility level while you are out? Is it just that colors are not that crisp in sunlight or one can barely see anything?

What is the best wallpaper/brightness setting for outdoors screen visibility? This morning I was running late for my lift and I missed a call from my mate asking where I was. I got my phone out and couldn't see a thing on the screen so had no idea who was ringing me. Turns out a plain black wallpaper and lowest setting brightness does not like being outdoors.

I had previously reported to a user and a friend that I could not see my Incredible in the sunlight - was a bit embarrassing considering how it was 'new technology'. It turns out that I had my Brightness at 25% to conserve battery. I could not see a hint of my screen let alone someone calling when it was sunny out. I didn't even have to be in the direct sunlight.
I decided to turn my brightness up to 100% (and on automatic), and I could see everything even when it was really sunny out! After a few days of being grumpy about not being able to see my screen in the sun - I am now very relieved that I can see my Incredible in the sun. So morale of the story, if you live in a sunny state, change your brightness to high or automatic - it is WELL worth the battery sacrifice if you are outdoors a lot and need to see your screen. I've also noticed the High setting also decreases glare from indoor lights.

I'm thinking about this phone for my wife...but she's read some iffy comments on amoled screens being hard to read in bright sunlight. How has it been for you? Difficult to use outside or not?

I love the apps , battery life is fine with the correct settings But and its a large butt I cant see the screen in sunlight at all.
Is there anyway around this? ( apart from going indoors or finding shade) Anyone considering buying the device should try it outside of the shop it is really poor,

As I recall, every review for the Captivate dings it for being hard to see the screen in direct sunlight. But is it just me, or is it not that bad? I've been using mine outdoors for running. That includes controlling the media player, switching to email to link to the map my running team emailed to us, and then referencing the map when so I knew where to turn. I'm not reading War and Peace with the reflection of the sun glaring off the screen, but all in all, I've found it pretty easy to use outdoors. What are your thoughts on real world outdoor SAMOLED usability?

Not sure what happened exactly but the camera view is now a pink screen with no visibility. Phone is not modded so I doubt it's something I did. Is this the result of water damage maybe? Everything else is working fine and the water indicator hasn't changed.

I'm having trouble developing an app, while it works in API level 10, it does not in API level 7. I wondery why and I've been looking for a site that summarizes the differences, or the new features from one API level to another and cannot find it.
09-04 04:24:21.485: E/AndroidRuntime(6834): Uncaught handler: thread main exiting due to uncaught exception
09-04 04:24:21.510: E/AndroidRuntime(6834): java.lang.VerifyError: [code]....
There seems to be a problem with an uncaught exception and reflection, although....why does it work on API level 10?

So, what do you guys keep your screen brightness level at? I never use auto-brightness. I usually keep mine at 40-50%, day and night

Hello, I would like to ask what settings are necessary for my application to be available on all screen sizes: Is it enough to compile it using SDK 1.6 (but target is set to 1.5 and API level to 3) or maybe I have to set target to 1.6 and API level to 4?

So I'm wondering if there is any way to lower the vibration level of the desire? The standard vibration is a bit too strong for my taste to be fair.

Android Version: 2.2 (but also happened on 2.1). My phone's battery level will suddenly drop to 89% even though it is still on charge. It's annoying because sometimes you'll start the day with only 89% charge instead of 100%. My friend also has a Desire but is not experiencing this problem - the only difference between them is the version of kernel. I read somewhere that is was the kernel that was the problem and somebody found a fix - xda developers - View Single Post - [DEV] Desire GSM/CDMA kernel 2.6.32 Google / 2.6.34/35 Cyanogen Mod.

I was just wandering if there is a shortcut to find the exact battery level on my Desire? I know you can go the 4636 route but thats slightly long winded, and most battery widgets/notification bar icons actually seem to use battery (i have properly tested this!). I know you can go into 'about phone' and do it that way but that just shows it as a series of bars, not as an actual figure.

Got a Desire partly because once the 32GB comes out (on pre-order) I'll be using it as an mp3 player as well as a phone. Managed to find a good program to sync my music with it (MediaMonkey) and now the only other hurdle to this seems to be the volume levels which are too low for my liking. Will simply getting headphones with a volume control push the volume up further? I'm planning on buying some headphones for it that'll include a mic, volume control and maybe a couple of buttons to control the music, but is there anything that has all these? I'm not keen on bluetooth devices in the slightest, so just want some super-duper in-ear headphones really.

Just wanted to make sure if this is a common issue or something wrong with my handset (so that I can try getting it replaced).
When I hear calls using phone's default speaker, the sound comes okay till one volume level. If I move up, the sound distorts.
If I use speaker-phone, things are worse. After a certain level, sound crackles a lot.
For music via phone's loud speaker, the sound doesn't crackle. But as identified by many, I can hear music with no bass & lots of treble.
Is this normal for Desire?
Comparing it with my wife's N95 (which has stereo speakers) was a nightmare for me.

I have push my first App to the market : it's a widget that unlock the restriction that limit the level the sound when you use a headset. It's take the form of a widget with a on/off switch. The apps is at 1 (I need the money to set a humanity project in Madagascar, so, it's will probably became free later). It's work on HTC Desire 2.2, and maybe on others devices. Please, report if so QR Code... Alternative download (if you can't buy paid apps on the market) : https://slideme.org/application/desire-sound-unlock.

Is it possible to create a lockscreen replacement at the application level that replaces the device's security lock, whether it be PIN, passphrase, pattern or face unlock, or potentially a new method? I know it's possible in the framework level, and have done it before, but I'm just wondering if it's possible to do it at the application level.
So far the few lockscreen replacements that I've tried only implement a slide gesture unlock lockscreen UI, and falls back to the device's security lock after that.

I was using satnav at the weekend; the battery level indicator on my Desire went from green to orange (20%) and the existent data connection dropped off straightaway. I was unable to re-establish a data connection even after switching the phone off and on again. I was in an area of reasonable/good network signal strength. The GPS continued to function however so I could still see my progress on the map but a data connection message appeared.
When I got home the phone continued to function on WiFi (with GPS on too) for nearly another two hours before it turned itself off, so there was plenty of "juice" left. My question is as to whether there is anything I can adjust to ensure that the battery continues to function fully (ie maintain a data connection) until it runs out? Or whether at 20% the phone is somehow set up to end a data connection? I have now got myself an HTC car charger to make sure the battery will not drop that low again when I am using satnav.

Is there a way to put a shortcut on the main screen for the battery level? I have been unsuccessful so far. I don't think the shortcuts option will let your drill down that deep to place that specific shortcut on the main screen.

Has anyone else noticed their Eris display SUCKS when outside in the sunlight? I can't see anything on the screen when I'm outside! I don't have the brightness all the way up to save on battery life, and I don't have a screen protector on. With spring/summer coming up soon, anyone else find this as annoying as I do?! Would a screen protector help that issue?

I have an HTC Desire (that is a Droid Incredible to Verizon people in the US). I like the 3.7" 480x800 AMOLED screen but it is too reflective and difficult to read under bright sunlight. Also the pentile pixel arrangement means that very small text is a bit blurry.
My Dad has the Samsung Galaxy S which has a 4" 480x800 Super AMOLED screen. It is very beautiful, very bright, not too reflective.
As far as Android phones go the following have the best screen:
HTC EVO - 4.3" 480x800 TFT (stolen from the HTC HD2).
Sony Experia 10 - 4.0" 480x800 TFT
Samsung Galaxy S - 4.0" 480x800 Super AMOLED
Nexus One/HTC Desire/HTC Droid Incredible - 3.7" 480x800 AMOLED. Anyone my question is what is the perfect screen for an android touchscreen phone?
1. What size?
2. What resolution?
3. What technology, TFT, Super AMOLED etc?
4. As for those who care capacitive or resistive? I expect 80% or 90% want capacitive. As people know the iphone 4 has a res of 640x960 but they have crippled the size at 3.5" (as a tactic to get people to also buy an ipad no doubt). I used to own a Nokia internet tablet 770. It had a 4.1" 480x800 resistive screen. The same with the Toshiba TG01. I think 4.1" is the perfect size. Something like 600x900 resolution. And either a TFT IPS or a RGB Super AMOLED capacitive.

the code I pasted below works great with the exception of the last view - the textView.
The TextView does not display:
CODE:............
I had a similar problem which came down to an XML layout issue and I'm sure it's a similar issue here only I don't know how to resolve it.
How I can get the TextView to display and perhaps more importantly, direct me to some good android xml layout material?

I have tried a while ago to use these values to be able to have 2 different builds to cover all resolutions on Android Market: <supports-creens android:smallScreens="false" android:normalScreens="true" android:largeScreens="true" android:anyDensity="true" /> Unfortunately it did not worked. Although it is recommended to have one big application for all resolutions sometime it is not possible due to some time and resources constraints. The goal is to have 2 different applications Game and Game HD on the market and Game to be visible only for 240x320/320x480 devices and Game HD to be visible for 480x800 devices.

I am tryout a very simple thing in an activity. It has three components laid out vertically in a linear layout - button, textview1, and textview2. All I want to do is to toggle visibility of textview1 when the button is clicked. So I have the following onclick handler for the button:
[HIGH]public void onClickMe(View view){
TextView thetext =(TextView)findViewById(R.id.thetext);
if(displayText){
thetext.setVisibility(TextView.INVISIBLE);
} else {
thetext.setVisibility(TextView.VISIBLE);
[code]...
The textview does get visible and invisible but the problem is when the textview is made invisible it leaves a big gap between the button and the textview2. I would like the textview2 to be moved the the position where textview1 was. I think it is something to do with relayout but not sure what needs to be done here. I tried multiple things as shown in the code above.
