HTC Desire :: Get Most Out Of Battery

There are numerous threads about the battery life of the Desire and almost all are filled with anecdotes, arguments and claims of insanely poor or insanely good battery life. Here are some tips on how, as a new user, one can maximize the life of a single charge on HTC Desire.
1) Make sure the battery is charged to 100%. This may seem obvious (the LED is green so it must be fully charged, right?) but new users may be unaware of the way the battery charges. You can check charge exactly by "dialing" *#*#4636#*#* to open the Testing menu. From here hit Battery information and it'll give you a precise measurement of the charge (the graphic icon in the status bar tends to round up the measurement giving a slightly skewed indication of the charge. It may for example register 100% but the Battery information reveals the charge to be only 93%........................

HTC desire users. I often charge my phone rather frequently like once it twice a day. Sometimes I charge even when the battery is only half full as I am going out. Will this spoil the battery or phone? (If I charge when the battery have not been all used up).I heard from people that it might spoil the phone if I charge in this manner frequently.

I'm thinking of getting the HTC desire when it releases in the US and I know it has already in Europe. I'm one of those people that would use the phone for internet, texting,probably not emailing.I'm interesting in what you guys' batter life is.Like if you had 3g off and all those battery saving tips.Like manual switching 3g on when needed etc.Since I want an accurate time to go by because I'm going to do the exact thing when I get mine.Using battery saving tips for max.As well if any hardcore power saving iphone users can post their times as well since I can't find anything on the web relating to that.

I know that there are a lot of threads about the battery on the Desire, but I've done a search and couldn't find any that seemed to deal with my particular issue, so hope you can help and apologies if it's been mentioned before.The problem I'm having is that when the battery reaches 15% (according to the battery life indicator, and the message that pops up saying "Battery is 15% or less. Please insert charger"), the phone shuts down as though the battery is completely dead. I can turn the phone on again, but the battery level then displays as 0% and the phone subsequently turns off again.
Is this something that I have accidentally turned on in the settings somewhere, or am I actually only getting 85% battery usage off each charge?Any help appreciated.

I have downloaded a number of widgets and apps.is this the reason? Im using Tajm, BattStatt, 3g Watchdog, DroidStats, Internal and external memory notifications, retro clock.Ive got all of these as widgets spread out over the 7 screens.Also guys if your phone was not used all day and locked how much battery would you say would get used?

I rooted and put "Official Froyo HTC Sense ROM". Seems to work fine, however, I have a feeling that battery life is worse, especially when using the net. However, maybe it's just in my head. What are your experiences with battery life after upgrading to 2.2? And please, don't make silly "I surfed the web for 12 hours and still have 25% left" claims Also, I'm not interested in other ROMs, as I want a clean sense experience with no modifications (as close as possible to the way HTC made it)So - 2.2 and battery life: same, worse or better than on 2.1 that came with your Desire?

My question is now my phones rooted is there any way to change the charging thresholds i.e.Rather than getting to 100% and stopping charging till it drops below 90% can it be changed to say 95%.Just curious really, or do any of the custom roms change how the phone charges.

I know there's been quite alot of talk on battery life etc and this is not really about tips for extending battery life or such, but what I wish to know is when is best to charge the battery on the Desire?Sometimes I hear that discharging the battery completely before you charge it is bad for it, and other times I hear its the best thing to do.I've had my phone a couple of weeks now, and after doing this a few times already (I now charge it every two days) I wanna know whether its better to just charge when it gets low on charge rather than keeping on discharging it before I begin to recharge.I know the iPhones and iPods benefit from doing half-charges rather than full charges all the time, but what would you say is best in the case of a HTC?

What started as a discussion over at XDA-Developers to try and resolve serious lag problems that some users experienced with their DHD is now proving to be a resolution to most of the problems reported with this device. Apparently turning 'usb debugging mode' ON is the resolution. The thread was first started by a user who noticed that whenever he was experiencing lag issues an Android process called /INIT was taking anywhere from 70% to 100% of his CPU usage. /INIT is a core process to the Android bootup sequence which should go 'dormant' after the bootup itself. What many users noticed after this was found is that whenever the lag problems started /INIT would take some 90% of the phone's CPU usage and not go back to its 'dormant' state. Even when the phone was idle and not being used. After applying the fix many people are reporting the phone running as smooth as they have even seen it running. Also users are reporting that recording video is no longer jerky and they can browse through the gallery smoothly and with no delays. The more relevant yet, and what may prove to be the best contribution from all this, is that some users are now reporting really amazing battery life performance. Its important to say that the so-called 'bug' doesnt seem to be HTC related but rather an Android 2.2 issue, as the performance issues are also being reported on other handsets running the latest Google OS - with some sources reporting that Google is soon to release an update to Froyo 2.2, possibly to resolve this bug. When my phone goes into standby (is that the same as sleep mode, BTW?) is it still connected tothe internet ? If not is there a setting that will automatically disable it (I don't mind manually re-connecting it again)?
I don't have anything auto-synching, so I don't need to be connected while I'm not actually using it. (Just thinking of ways of saving valuable juice )

A couple is questions: 1. I've installed Advanced Task Killer and I use it fairly regularly, but I don't understand why I keep finding apps I'm not using popping up when I check it. For example: when I finish online I turn off 3g or WiFi and use task killer to turn off internet. But I also find half a dozen other apps running, things like Clock, Messages, Last FM, etc. Can I stop that from happening?
2. I keep hearing that the display really eats battery life, but when I check Battery Usage in 'About phone' the things that between them account for about 90% is battery use are 'Phone idle', 'Cell standby' and 'Android system'. Display has used around 7%. Does that sound right?

I'm interested in buying this phone but I'm not sure about the battery life. Can anyone tell me how much the battery will last if used in browsing over 3G? My currently old Nokia 6120 doesn't last more than 1 hour and a half doing that, which is pretty frustrating.

I went into battery usage>>partial wake and found that Netcounter and Calendar were using virtually all of the battery between them. I've uninstalled Netcounter. However, I am curious as to why Calendar is using so much battery power? Is there a way I can reduce this?

If you leave GPS switched on, and don't use any GPS apps, would it consume the same battery as with it off. Becasue it only activates itself when a GPS using program is on which means it wouldn't kill the battery?
Anyone tested this out?

this thread directed at those that did not root or unlock their HTC desire but uses its original android.. before i go on, my standard usage is as follows, mostly sms using, a phone call or two, less than an hour of wifi browsing at night.. on android 2.1, my battery lasted roughly 2 days and a bit more.. after updating to android 2.2 via wifi through auto update on the phone. today was my third day after charging my phone to 100%.
its now almost 5pm, on my third day and my battery still has a whopping 40% of battery life left.. so just wondering whether anyone else have this miraculous boost of battery life with android 2.2 or not.

A while ago I got rid of Handcent because it was very laggy following updates.Having heard this had been fixed, I have downloaded it again and it's no longer laggy which is great.However, it is draining the battery. I know this because I've had the System Panel monitor on, and the history shows that the CPU usage for Handcent is high for about 15-20 minutes after I send a message (as opposed to the stock, which just goes down as soon as I've sent a message).Is there a setting somewhere on Handcent that I'm missing, that's keeping the CPU usage high?

Just wanted to get a feel for what the consensus view in this area is, as i'm slightly torn.On one hand i've read online (here I think, and elsewhere) that fully draining the battery regularly is bad for it and will damage its cells. (I'm not sure what regularly means, daily/weekly/monthly?) Hence i'm a little cautious to do it.However I tend to get far better batter usage after draining, turning the phone off and doing a full overnight recharge. Little top-ups, like taking it from 60% (where it reached through a day of medium usage) to 100% seems to result in inferior performance.A lot of people on here talk about overnight charging, which i've no problem doing. (In fact i'm used to it as my old Samsung Omnia required it) But 'how' do people do it? As in, do you regularly use 70-80% in a day and then leave it overnight? My current behaviour is to use it throughout the day in during (odd bit of browsing, txting, app usage etc) which can take 50-60%, then get home top-up for an hour or so, which gives me about 40% back, so I know i've got plenty in the evening when out.

I bought a HTC Desire on a week ago and love it. Only problem is tat the battery is dire. I found it lasts for about 4 hours then it's dead. I am not running any apps or Wi-Fi, GPS, syncing etc. I initialy put id down to me playing with the phone constantly for the 1st couple of days. However by the fith day the battery was still dying in 5 hours or sooner. I took the phone back suspecting a faulty handset or battery. Got a new phone and battery. Still have the same very poor 4 or 5 hour battery life. I have loaded 'Battery Graph' app and you can see there is almost a straight line going down losing 20% of power every hour!!!! This is even overnight when it's doing absolutely nothing. I have also loaded Advanced Task Killer and go tthat shutting down any errant apps every 30mins. Still no improvement in battery life. Any ideas what may be causing this? Neither of the batteries I have had have hologram stickers on them like my old Nokia did. Should the official batteries have hologram stickers?

had my desire since the first release date and everything was fine until a few days ago when my phone was very hot and the battery life was about 5 hours from full charge.I think it is something running in the background i have been into settings then checked to see what was running everything seemed fine so i am a little stuck, is there an app to see whats running.

So after all the horror stories about battery life I was kinda worried about my new Desire especially as I am a full brightness, 3G loving kinda man. But having got the phone on saturday, I have found it quite good. I mean, I played with it almost constantly for about 8 hours, and I still had 30% charge left.
Normal usage would be maybe an 2 hours or so per day, so i don't think there is any danger I'm gonna run outta juice at work. Also, when sleeping, I don't seem to lose any battery power at all, despite the experiences of others. Anyone else think the battery problems are overblown?

Android Version: 2.2 (but also happened on 2.1). My phone's battery level will suddenly drop to 89% even though it is still on charge. It's annoying because sometimes you'll start the day with only 89% charge instead of 100%. My friend also has a Desire but is not experiencing this problem - the only difference between them is the version of kernel.
