HTC Desire :: Downside To Unlocking Phone To Go With A Different Provider?

Aug 19, 2010

Is there any downside to unlocking an HTC Desire to go with a different provider? In my province Telus offers the Desire, but I might want to go with an alternative carrier. So in theory I buy a phone, pay the $15-$20 and have it unlocked. Then take it to the alternative provider and they sign me up

HTC Desire :: Phone Have No Voice Mail Notification On Provider O2

Sep 6, 2010

I'm new to these forums as I'm very new to using an HTC Desire Android phone. As a previous iPhone owner I was a little nervous to port over but, I've been extremely pleased with my new android handset and OS. However one thing has been driving me crazy. The other day i decided to ring my voice mail and found that I had 3 missed voice mails. No where on the home screen of my phone or settings screens or anywhere else I looked on my phone was I notified of my Voice Mails. I rely quite heavily on accessing my Voice mails as the building I work in has terrible reception. In the past using my iPhone I could enter an area of the building that had better reception and the notification would arrive. I need this functionality, especially as at the moment I'm trying to get a new job, I'd be a little upset if I were to miss a golden opportunity due to no voice mail notification. I tried a few tests with my handset to make sure I wasn't loosing the plot and sure enough I do not receive any notification for my missed calls or as I mentioned earlier no reception problem straight to voice mail. The idea of having to phone 901 every time i need to check my voice mails seems a little absurd, this is 2010 surely as it is primarily first and foremost a phone I would suspect that you would be able to have this functionality. I've searched the net and there's not much talk on how to fix this problem. Sure there's talk on use an App but I'd like that as my last resort really.
This may or may not have been mentioned on these forums, I have done a search before hand and results were blank so I apologies if this has been covered. Please Please Please any one here with infinite wisdom on this matter would be a breath of fresh air.

HTC Desire :: Orange Branded Desire - Rooting - Unlocking And Froyo

Jul 23, 2010

I am toying with the idea of putting a Froyo Rom on my desire, but have several questions that aren't answered in other posts.

1. Will I need to unlock my phone before, during or after changing the Rom? I am not overly bothered by the orange stuff on my phone, but am worried about losing my WiFi connections!

2. Do I need a goldcard? Some instructions say yes, other no. None mention orange handsets specifically.

3. Which is the easiest & safest method to root my phone, if I want to put the Froyo Rom on it?

4. What if I want to change Roms - do I need to do the whole process again? I've seen something about a Rom manager, but where do you get it and how does it work?

5. Which Rom do I use? I've looked at some I'd the modacco forum ROMs, but most don't actually say what you do or don't get with them.

6. What's that difference between a2sd and a2sd+? Does it come as part of the ROM or so I news to get it separately?

HTC EVO 4G :: What Is Downside To Not Updating?

Aug 10, 2010

Other than not getting the benefits of Froyo that is? I haven't done it yet and I am seeing a lot of "wish I could go back to 2.1" and "Froyo destroyed my battery" posts on here so I am weighing my options. I love my phone and it works well. My battery is great (usually around 24 hours with light to moderate use) and everything is just the way I want it. As I understand from the myriad posts on this board if I update I will probably have to go back and check all my settings again, possibly factory reset (with all the fun that entails) and possibly lose some of the functionality I currently have -- all for a flashlight app a little speed improvement and flash. Am I missing something? On the other hand, if this is something I will really need to do (eventually if not now) to keep my phone current and continue to get new apps, I want to consider it.

Those of you who have had a bad experience, have the "fixes" on here mostly done the trick? I am willing to go through all of that if I get my phone back at the end of it all, but will be really upset if I do all this and my battery is cut in half or worse. I already BTDT on the Moment with the 2.1 upgrade so I am skittish.

HTC EVO 4G :: Downside To Purchasing Through Wirefly?

May 13, 2010

I was wondering if anybody had legitimate reasons for why I shouldn't get my EVO through Wirefly? The ONLY downside I can think of right now, is I may have to wait till June 5th or 7th to actually receive the phone. But the positives seem to outweigh that little issue. I've seen all the threads related to Best Buy and Radio Shack and I'm trying to figure out what the draw is for purchasing there other than getting it as fast as you can. This is all based on what I have seen Wirefly do, recently with the Incredible release, as well as purchasing my last phone (ENV2) through them, but this is how I foresee it going down:

-EVO becomes available on June 4th, same as Incredible became available on April 29th.

-EVO is priced at $149, just as the Incredible was and is currently listed at $149. Both phones would be or are $199 on their respective carriers websites and at places like Radio Shack and Best Buy.

-Would be able to drop another $50 off price because of Bing Cashback program, effectively dropping the total purchase price to $99, without having to pay any sales tax. Still would have to pay $35 activation fee, unless Sprint was running a special through Wirefly giving free activation. (Much like AT&T is currently doing) But maximum cost of phone would be $135.

-EVO would ship overnight and best case scenario would arrive on Saturday June 5th, or worst case scenario Monday June 7th.

-No rebates mail in or otherwise to worry about or mess with. Just a lower cost for the phone overall.

Does anybody have any LEGITIMATE reasons other than not getting the phone on the day it is released why it wouldn't be a good idea to go with Wirefly on this?I'm not looking for arguments or pissing matches on this, just really curious if anyone has any reasons for me to think about not going with Wirefly on this, if the previously mentioned aspects turn out that way.

HTC Desire :: Which Provider To Get In UK

Apr 8, 2010

I'm looking for an iPhone replacement. I hate Apple for making my life so difficult with keeping it unlocked, but I need that as I travel and need to use local SIM cards. My primary base is the UK so I'm getting the phone there.I currently use O2, but they don't have the HTC Desire yet although they promise it late April.I wanted the Motorola Droid/Milestone first for the hardware keyboard, but I cannot view it in any shop and don't want to buy a phone I've never seen in person. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 only runs 1.5, the HTC Legend has a smaller screen and Google Nexus One doesn't seem to be out yet in the UK, so HTC Desire is my choice.

a. Will it work with my MS Exchange server at the office for e-mail / calendar push synching as well as the iPhone does?

b. The unlock is easy GBP 15 or similar no matter which provider I get it from, correct?

c. If the provider has "branded" it by adding unnecessary gizmos, how easy would it be to put some vanilla or HTC-default Android 2.1 version on it?

d. Which provider to get it from? I know a lot of it depends on my usage (which is data and international call heavy), but are there any general considerations, e.g., perhaps some provide it already unlocked (but still with a contract) or without extensive provider branding.

Any help will be appreciated.

Android :: APP For Unlocking Phone Using Hardware Buttons

Dec 20, 2009

I know it sounds pretty worthless, but on the hero their are 6 hardware buttons, and if their could be an app that would unlock the phone without having to enter the passcode that would be awesome.

Eor example the combination of pressing talk twice and menu one would unlock the phone, of course you could create the combination of hardware buttons to unlock the phone. You would not have to type in the password to unlock it using the hardware button combination to unlock the phone. So if you were to just press the end key to normally unlock the phone, the phone would wake up and prompt the unlock screen, but if you pressed the combo of hardware buttons you wouldnt have to do that.

Android : Content Provider - No Link Between Content Provider And Its CONTENT_URI Declared In Another Class

Mar 1, 2010

I am having a hard time understanding content providers. In the notepad example and others, the content provider never even declares its CONTENT_URI anywhere inside itself, yet the docs say to publicly declare this. It's declared in a different class. So when an activity queries a content provider with a CONTENT_URI, how does Android know which one I want. I see no link between a content provider and its CONTENT_URI declared in another class.

I also don't how to think about intents and content providers. I know that you don't call an intent on a content provider. But an activity queries a content provider without an intent, and an activity has a mimetype attribute in the manifest that would seem to tie it to a content provider.

Android :: Stop Auto Screen Rotation In App When Unlocking Phone From Standby

Aug 24, 2010

I have an android application that I want to always be running in landscape mode.

I have the following code implemented to keep the app in landscape mode all the time:

inside my activity in the Application Manifest
android:screenOrientation="landscape"

This seems to launch and keep the application in landscape view for the whole duration of the application. Perfect!

However, if I have the app running on my HTC Aria (Android 2.1) and the phone locks, if I unlock the phone, I see the application for probably half a second and it's in portrait orientation and then quickly switches back to landscape mode. It is quite frustrating because all of my views are jumbled around and it looks unprofessional as you can imagine. This happens in both the emulator and on my real phone.

Does anyone know how to stop the application from temporarily rotating when the phone is unlocked?

I have tried overriding onConfigurationChanged() but with no success.

I have also tried putting setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE); into the onResume() but the app still shows as the incorrect orientation for a split second when the phone is unlocked.
