Android :: How To Unregister Listener After Application Get Closed

Apr 28, 2010

I am writing an application that listens to phone calls and perform some tasks when phone call arrives. The Application contains one activity which includes 2 buttons 'Start' and 'Stop' (where starts register the listener and stops unregister it - see code below).

The problem starts when the application is closed ( onDestroy is called ). If the user pressed on the start button and exit from the application the listener still working (which is the expected behavior) but from now it is impossible to unregister the listener since launching new instance of the application create new instance of phoneListener.

My question is:

1.Is there better way to implement my requirement?

2.Can I save the phoneListener object and reload It on application creation?

Android :: To Unregister A Broadcast Receiver Register Registered In Manifest File

Mar 19, 2010

I have been able to register and unregister a broadcast receiver from the java code and know that a broadcast receiver is unregistered (even if it is not done explicitly) on its own as the process that registered it is killed. Now I have a broadcast receiver which has been registered through manifest file and not through the java code, and need to unregister the broadcast receiver from the java code. Since this, i think would need a reference to System context that instantiates the broadcast receiver.

General :: Google Searches Phone By First Letter Only?

Dec 29, 2013

I have an HTC One running CM 10.2 (which is essentially Android 4.3)

I recently noticed some annoying behavior: I wanted to find the AT&T app on my phone, so I typed the letters "at" into the home screen search bar. No apps appeared. I was surprised, so I searched through the app drawer and found the app that I needed. It's name is "myAT&T". I then discovered that if I type the letters "my" into the home screen search bar, the app will appear. The bottom line is that the Android search bar only searches for apps, contacts, etc., by the first letter. I also noticed the same behavior in the browser with regard to bookmarks.

General :: Unable To Launch Google Now On Phone?

Jun 14, 2013

I can't seem to launch Google Now on my phone. I used to have it on my phone. It used to show up when I launched the Google search app and by pressing the Menu button but now somehow it doesn't show up whatsoever.

My phone has 4.1.2 when I bought it so I think Google Now should probably be preinstalled. And also, is it only available in select countries?

General :: How To Delete Google Hangouts From Phone

Aug 23, 2013

Is it possible to delete Google Hangouts from my phone completely?

I don't use it, nor will I ever use it, so why does it have to be on my phone? I am so sick of having it pop up in Play Store reminding me to update it, when I don't even use it. I would rather it be deleted from my phone so I will never be prompted to update it again. The saddest part is they must know what a complete dud this app is as they've removed the uninstall tab on the play store page (well for me its removed and I can't uninstall it from the play store) but they remind me the needs updating ...

General :: Can Setup Second Phone Number Using Google Voice?

Jan 28, 2014

I want to setup a second phone number using Google Voice. Some time ago I created a new number online and set it up on my previous cell. Now 2 years later I got a new cell and want to setup Google Voice, however the application behaves differently now and tries to integrate with my real phone number, and that is not my intention. During the install it verified my real phone number and tried to use it.

My question: how to set it up to use a number I created online long time ago? I clicked every option but could not find a way to repoint Voice to my second number.

General :: How To Prevent Google Contacts From Synchronizing With Phone

Oct 16, 2012

I like all the functionality Google has to offer with their contacts management. It's nice to know my contacts are backed up on-line so that I they're not lost if I manage to lose my phone. However, I do not want contacts loaded onto my phone that I do not communicate with by cellphone (only e-mail). There's simply no point to it. I do not use a local client e-mail application--only GMail. I'd rather keep my phone contacts list succinct. But I have yet to figure out a way to do this, except by keeping a separate GMail account specifically for managing my phone contacts (I keep only those with phone numbers, and synchronize with that one). I'd rather keep it all unified in one account (both contacts and calendar).

General :: Galaxy S3 - Moving Contacts From Phone To Google

Aug 10, 2012

I have read some about how to move "Phone" stored contacts to Google. They all seem to revolve around exporting all the contacts to the SD card and then importing them again into Google.

The question I have is, what about all the extraneous contacts, say from facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, etc? Do those also get exported and then imported into Google essentially creating a duplicate contact for each contact that is sync'ed from those other services?

What I want to do is just take the few contacts I have run across that are "Phone" contacts and move them to Google. Basically, I don't want ANY phone contacts. Only Google contacts which I can then join to LinkedIn and facebook contacts.

Does that make sense? I just don't want to try this export/import and end up with a ton of duplicate contacts and be in a worse mess than I have now!

By the way, I am on a Galaxy S3 under Verizon.

General :: Phone Override Of Google Maps Audio?

Conversely, while listening to Pandora, it shuts off to allow me to hear the Google Maps directions. Is there a method to automatically suppress Google Maps audio when on the phone?

General :: Procedure For Changing Google Account Associated With Phone

May 30, 2013

I've got a new phone, and both it and my old one show up on Google Play, with the tabs showing the respective apps installed. The old one is rooted, and I want to let my son use it on his own GMail ID. I've no problem resetting it or loading a completely new ROM.

Is there a proper procedure for dissociating it from my GMail ID and adding it to his. I have a suspicion that if I just change the associated email address in the Google Play settings on the phone, it will still appear on my list of devices.

General :: AOSP Derived Phone With No Google Services

Feb 17, 2014

One of my friends (an ardent iOS fan) claimed while arguing a few days back to me that "You can't make a phone with AOSP (pure Open source part of Android) which has Yahoo Mail as the default mail app, Bing as the default search engine and Google maps as the default maps app. That would be illegal! ". This was his exact condition. I want to know whether his claim was true. I know there is a full replacement suite of Google play services in active development (called Replicant) - but even if they wanted (including MS and Yahoo ready to provide necessary support), could they do it? What terms and conditions would prevent them from doing it if they had required money and time to implement - given the requirement above?

General :: Share Link To Photo Via Google App Through Phone?

May 14, 2012

Yesterday I took a picture and wanted to send it to my brother. I wanted to send him a URL to an uploaded file so I could then share that URL with others in the future. I did not want to email a picture because, frankly, it's not as easy as pasting a URL in a GTalk window.

I spent about 10 minutes thinking of all the ways I could do this using Google services and couldn't find any way to do it on my phone. Here are the options I considered:

Option 1) Upload to Google Plus - but viewing the photo in G+ app doesn't provide a public link. SHaring option only presents your standard email, mms, etc. options. Option 2) Upload to Picasa - but I get the same sharing options as G+ - no option to grab a link. Option 3) Google Drive. This was the last option, but of course it only presents the same options as before. Now, I can create a public link when I'm at a computer, but not on my Android device.

So I ended up having to upload via the imgur app and just sending that link. I'm okay with that for now, but I'm already uploading to G+ automatically; why can't I just get a public url through the app?

That whole process was very disappointing. I wish Google would give us some way, any way, to share a file via URL through a Google App - specifically, Drive.

General :: Phone Stolen - How To Unsync Google Account

Apr 4, 2013

I haven't used this phone (Sprint Samsung epic 4g touch) ever since I bought an iPhone 5. (yes I know, don't judge) and I lent it to a cousin and it got stolen. Now I want to know if there's a way to know if someone else is using the phone with my google account. I went into the play store online and downloaded some apps and apparently they installed but when I check my devices it says last activity over a few weeks ago.

So I really don't care that it's stolen, I just don't want anyone accessing my google account and email. Is a password change enough to block anyone using the phone with my google account?

General :: Syncing Contacts And Calendar From Phone Memory To Google?

Aug 6, 2013

currently I still have got Sony Xperia X8. I know it's a little bit old but still I want to keep it for few months. Now I'm thinking about rooting it and upgrading it to Android 2.2 or 2.3. All the stuff is stored in the phone's memory. I'd like to synchronize my contacts and calendar events to Google - tried few tricks but still without any result.

It looks like it's not possible to sync contacts which weren't stored as Google Contacts. I need to do the same with my calendar events.

I would really like to keep my data stored in the phone's memory as well as on Google. So I'm looking for sync option. If this is not possible then I'll need to get used to store everything just on Google but first I need to import my data there as well.

How do you sync your data or what solution do you use and why?

General :: Google Search No Longer Searches Phone By Default

Jan 6, 2013

I have a number of applications on my phone that are just search plugins. (Searchify, for example.) At some point before 4.2, they "stopped working". I've come to discover that they still work fine if, after doing an initial search and pressing enter or selecting a suggestion, you scroll the bottom bar all the way to the right and select "Phone".

To preempt some questions: the initial screen's suggestions do include applications I can run, just not searching "inside" applications. I have verified that the applications I want to search inside are enabled in the search settings. I have disabled Google Now, but I've tried reenabling it, with no improvement in results.

General :: Photos Taken On Phone No Longer Sync With Google Account

May 11, 2012

Up until November 2011 I had an older model Motorola Droid X. I was able to take photos using the phone camera and those photos would automatically sync with my Google accounts and could be accessed by Google+, Blogger, etc. All was well and I was happy.

In November 2011, I fried my Droid X when I spilled Gatorade on it and it was immediately replaced with a HTC Droid Incredible 2. I just downloaded Google+ (over six months after replacement) and the photos that I take NOW, sync just fine. But the photos that I took during the last 6-months did not synch up with my Google accounts.

Is there any way to synch the photos taken during the 6-month period that I did not have Google+ installed to be included in the Instant Upload?
