General :: Using WiFi Only For Android?
Oct 29, 2013
I'm sick of dealing with Straight Talk putting me on a constant throttle, to the point where I've been averaging 2kbs per second since Saturday. That's not just throttle, that's unusable. I want to go another route and use Wi-Fi only. I get Wi-Fi nearly everywhere I go except home (and a Tracfone in case I'm in need of a phone and out of range of Wi-Fi), so I'm looking for a good internet provider. I wouldn't use much, if any, data on the computer, it'd be 99%-100% for my android only. I'd use VoIP services so my android can still be everything an android can be. Plus, I wouldn't have to worry about finding an unlocked phone online when buying a new one. Unlocked or not, it'd still work fine with the Wi-Fi/VoIP method.
Either has unlimited data (preferred) or a lot of data (like 10gbs).Is decently fast. Anything faster than a megabyte per second is fine by me. Hell, at this point, even 200kbs per second would often be faster than what I get). I'm not looking for speeds that would download a whole freakin movie in 5 seconds, but a decent speed that doesn't make me want to throw my phone out the window. I'm currently looking at Wild Blue satellite internet, which is $60 for 10gbs and is fast (supposedly). But I don't know what people think of that company.

I don't own an Android 4.3 tablet yet but I need to know the following things.I wanted to restrict my device so that a user is unable to change any settings (in particular turn on/off WiFi) and disable all applications except one.How strict is the restriction?
If I disable all apps except one what will the restricted user be able to do?
In an ideal scenario I'd like the restricted user to do only 3 things:
a) turn the tablet on/off
b) turn the application of my choosing on/off
c) all other options would be disabled
d) the restricted user should NOT see any data of the administrator

I work on a remote site and live in a Donga (A portable bedroom) These Donga's have thick walls and i can barely get our camps wifi, let alone any Phone signal.
I have noticed that my mobile phone can get a medium wireless signal strength if i place it on the window cill and it got me wondering if it could be possible to use my android phone as a wifi repeater so that i could use the internet on my laptop inside my Donga.
Long story short, is it at all possible to have my Android phone connected to a wifi network, and then my laptop tethering with the android phone but using wifi data and not cellular?

I have a single user access to a Wifi device on my macbook. I'd like to use my HTC evo and sisters iPhone on the Wifi also. Is there any way I can broadcast the wifi from one of my devices. I know if I had my laptop hardwired I could share the Wifi, but I've not found anything to do Wifi to Wifi. or Wifi to Bluetooth. Any know, I don't have data plans on the cell phones as I am out of town.

I have two android devices at home, a HTC One S and a Nexus 7(2012). The problem is that when I am using one or another occasionally the wi-fi will simply stop working. I'm still getting full signal in the notification bar, but either Chrome or whatever app that is using the wi-fi will stop retrieving data and eventually time-out or stay on buffering.
I have tried some things including changing the channel my wi-fi is set to from Auto to 6 and Mixed B/N/G mode to N only, but nothing seems to fix this problem except for one thing; turning the wi-fi off on one of these devices. The connections seem perfectly stable when I do this.
I also have a laptop in the house, my girlfriend comes over with her iphone, and I have an ipad from work that I occasionally bring home (I'm a teacher) and none of these devices ever have any issues, it's only the two android devices.
It's almost as it they are sharing the same wi-fi train track and only one can ride it at a time.

I run into rather strange problem. My phone, china Android 2.3.4, is working quite weel instead of this:
If I use WIFI, then turn it off and try to use mobile data connection, it is not possible.
Icon showing that mobile connection should be active is on, but no data comming through.
I tried switchiing to airplane mode, changing access point names and so on, but nothing worked. Only solution was to restart the phone, after that all works normally - until connecting to wifi.
After rooting my phone I tried to figure out more with Teminal emulator. It seems that after releasing wifi connection and turning interface down, mobile interface comes up with same IP as before - it should ask network for new one. But, more important, route table is empty (or containing one entery and no default gateway at all) I tried bringing mobile interface up and down several times, tried forcing it to use dhcp (timeout), without success.
Is there a way to "reset" whole networking system from shell? Something like partial restart, which would be probably quicker than full restart.

Download a terminal client, e.g. ConnectBot and connect to your local shell.Enter `su` to become root. (Double check with whoami afterwards). Enable wifi tethering and ensure your data connection is working (connect to VPN)
Run `netcfg` and note your interface names (typically tun0 and wlan0 (ignore m.wlan0 or similar, only take the one with a real mac address), as is on my SGSII)..Double check the subnet for your wlan0 device and enter the following commands:
iptables -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.43.0/24 -j MASQUERADE -t nat
(setup a postrouting entry for the tethered devices subnet, implementing NAT)
iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -i wlan0 -o tun0
forward packets from tethered devices across the tunnel
iptables -A FORWARD -j ACCEPT -i tun0 -o wlan0
forward packets from the tunnel to the tethered devices
Note, because you are using NAT, you will need to configure port forwards on your Android device to be able to run servers etc on tethered devices. Unlikely you'll need to worry about that though. Feedback if it worked or not. Posting this now from my home IP, OpenVPN for Android and these iptable rules!

When I flash back to stock with HD2 stock rom I notice the wifi stays connected to my connectify connection until I disconnect it myself but after I flash to TyphooN_CM7_v3.8.1-MAGLDR the wireless works for about 1 minute and drops but still shows as connected on the HD2 until I disconnect and reconnect again and it repeats.
Is it a problem with connectify, the radio I flashed to is _2.15.50.14 ?

I'm new here and I'm using a doixanh ROM, GingerDX (but I already used Froyobread). So, some time ago I had a problem...I couldn't connect my device (Sony Ericsson Xperia X8) to wifi.
What I did? I full wiped the phone...and that fixed the wifi issue. But now I have the same problem...I can't connect my phone to wifi anymore!
I could do another full wipe, but this problem would just appear again and again...I googled for some fixes and I found some answers...one of the solutions would be deleting one file (dhct or something) from the phone...the problem is: I don't have that file...
Another (on a youtube video) to download an "hot fix" package with 3 files and place them on the phone...but the link that he gave is broken and I couldn't find those files on the internet.
Like wifi, my phone's GPS doesn't work too.

I've a problem with my stock Galaxy S4 in that since a firmware update (4.2.2.2 to 4.3) I cannot for the life of me get the WiFi to turn on.I've been having this problem for almost a week even though the update occurred quite sometime before that. I've tried puling the battery but it didn't have any effect. Tried putting the phone into Recovery Mode, sadly I can't even get that to work (Vol. up, Home and Power together). All that happens is the tiny tiny blue text of "Recovery Mode" appears, vanishes upon button release, then the phone proceeds to boot normally. No recovery mode at all. Eventually I decided to to a Factory Reset in the vain hope it would reslove the problem. All I've succeeded in doing is losing all my data (yes it was backed up but to restore the backup I need to have WiFi turned on!)
N.B After downloading Kies3 I've been able to update with latest firmware.....and I can now turn on my WiFi!! WOOP!! About bloody time too!
N.B.2 Scrub that last comment. After being able to turn Wifi on and scan for signal, it allowed me to enter the password for my home WiFi then I restarted the device only to find that again the Wifi option on the phone will not turn on.

I would like to be able to share my ethernet internet connection on my android 2.2 tablet via wifi.
I know there are various app's on phones that allow you to share your 3g connection but I have not found anything that I can actually install that will create the same sort of functionality on my tablet, most of the ones I've seen on the play store are simple short cuts giving control over the pre-existing wifi hotspot app.
What I need is the wifi hotspot itself, ie the ability to use my tablet as a router/bridge.

I'm getting a galaxy s3 very soon and I'm thinking about getting a nexus 7 with it.But as you know, nexus 7 doesn't have 3G so my only option to access network on it when there's no wifi network available is to use my future s3 as a wifi hotspot. So my questions are:
1-Is data consumption when using the phone as a wifi hotspot the same as if I'm normally using 3G on the phone itself ?
2-How long can an android(specifically the S3 if it matters much) act as a wifi hotspot before the battery runs out ?

Recently I bought a wifi range extender (TP-Link tl-wa730re first version) and I configured it in order to extend (range extender mode) wifi signal of my router over some rooms of my house. In particular I use this extender to take the signal into a room in which I already get router signal, but it's too low to have a fast connection.
So in this room I have 2 signal (I used this app to analyze my conditions Play Store Link): the router one, with 20-30%, and the repeater one, with 70 %. I haven't any problem with my pc, but I have the same issue with my android devices (galaxy nexus, 2 nexus 7, htc sensation, xperia u): they randomly disconnect themselves for just a couple of seconds and then they switch between the 2 signals
Moreover about every 10 hours, I must reboot the extender, or every android device stops to get a working connection. For example, my gnex lost connection and continuously tries to connect to router, but it always fail.
If I move from this room to another one (especially if in this room router signal is stronger than before) my devices lost connection and I have to reboot phone or tab to get connection back...
My router has a WPA-PSK TKIP-AES password, dhcp enabled, automatic channel search enabled (the usual channel is always free), and wifi bg with a speed up to 125 mbps. My extender has no password configured, dhcp disabled, same channel of router and its extended wifi has been seen by every android as the same of router (only 1 signal is detected into settings).
I already tried to set a static IP from wifi settings on phones but nothing change..

I want to host an INFRASTRUCTURE (not AD-HOC), otherwise known as a SoftAP (Access point) on wifi. This is possible with many applications, but they all want to use a mobile data connection. Is there any application that allows you to host a SoftAP WITHOUT a 2G/3G/4G connection? This is just for playing over WIFI between a samsung galaxy s3 and an older android 2.1 tablet. These cannot see AdHoc networks.
Anyways, I'm interested in any application that allows hosting of an infrastructure WiFi network without tethering to just host a wireless lan point.

I have a problem with connecting to WiFi on android. I got 2 phones, one with Android 4.2.2 and the other with an older version, but none can't connect. I also tried with an iphone and had no problem.
Also, I tried connecting to other WiFi networks with the same phones, and they connected. So I think there might be a problem with my home network.

Any way to use an android phone as a microphone? As in, a way that actually works on a 64-bit version of Windows? I've tried a bunch of things that seem a bit dated, like DroidCam, nothing wants to work.

I have just bought an Android Smart TV Box (to replace my AC Ryan media box which gave up the ghost a few days ago) and it mostly works fine - it is connected to my tv via hdmi and the box is hard wired to my router - so it is the standard connection setup. I have two usb hard drives connected to it. I obviously want to drag and drop media files from my phone (android) or my laptop (Windows7) to the connected hard drives I use ES Explorer app on my phone and Windows explorer but using either version I cannot see the Android box wirelessly - if i do a scan using es explorer it finds the laptop straight away and i can drag and drop but it just will not find the android box at all. However if i go onto the Android box and into the es explorer app and do a scan it picks up the laptop and i can drag and drop a file onto the laptop. So the wireless is sort of working as opposed to not at all. But just seems odd that i cant see it at all - i cant even ping it from the laptop.

My main device is an HTC One M8, but I also have a Nexus 7 2013, Nexus 7 2012, Galaxy Nexus, and a Moto X running on the same Wi-Fi network. They are all experiencing some slow activity on Wi-Fi. I also have 2 desktop PCs and a Laptop running on the same network and they are running fine, no noticeable lag.
On all of my Android devices, browsing the web via Chrome is almost as snappy (but still not the speeds I get on data) as it is on my computers. However when it comes to certain apps, there is a noticeable slowdown. Instagram has a lot of trouble loading images, Facebook, Twitter, Play Store downloads are stupid slow as well. And a bunch of push notifications from those apps, as well as GMail, won't come through or will come through hours after they should have.
But if I just switch Wi-Fi off on the devices that also have a data plan running (Moto X, One M8, GNex) everything comes through as fast as expected.
Could it be my router? I have a Linksys E800.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 5 player running gingerbread. I'm trying to access files on it from my WinXP box via wifi. This seems like it should be a very common thing to do, but I simply can't find it. If I plug it into a usb port, I can access the drives. Can this be done via wifi?
Again, I want to access the android from the PC. Not the other way around.
