Dec 7, 2012
I am selling my sg2 and was wondering how to wipe all my data from it. I am running AOKP but no longer have the .zip or access to any, as there is no internet here.

I have a generic (unbranded) tablet here. The user has used too many pattern attempts. I do a lot of these where I just wipe the device for people.
Sometimes I use key combos and sometimes i use ADB to boot into recovery and then simply select the "wipe data / factory reset option"
However, this tablet has no keys , no volume keys that is, so i used ADB to boot it into recovery which it did just fine.
How can i select "wipe data" when i can't use volume keys to select it? the touch screen is unresponsive in this mode too
I have tried
ADB SHELL WIPE DATA
but i get a permission denied error
I have tried running
ADB ROOT
but i get a "cannot run as root in production build" error
I have tried to root the tablet with super one click by short fuse but it crashes.
so i am basically asking is it at all possible to do a wipe data / factory reset on a device which is not rooted through ADB?

Does system recovery "Wipe data/factory reset" resets custom kernel to stock?
I'm asking this because im noob, and I want to try JellyBlast for Galaxy GT-S5570I. It has two zip files to flash one is ROM, and one is custom kernel. If I do something wrong I'm afraid that I won't be able to restore nandroid backup.

After I received the OTA to 2.1 I have noticed more lag when scrolling between home screens, using 2D games is painful with the framerate reduction, and many items that are running in the background without me ever starting them. I also cannot seem to keep them closed either. I can also say that I am getting worse battery life now than I was with 2.0.1. I was wondering what would actually happen if I rebooted into Recovery Mode and did a Factory Reset with Data Wipe. Would this possibly help with the update causing these problems that were not there before?

Just ran reset on my phone twice...it rebooted and nothing was removed! Never seen this before anyone have any thoughts? I'm on CM 5.0.7.1, and haven't seen this behavior before on that or any other ROM. Gonna boot into recovery and do it manually.

what exactly does a data reset do? Does reformat (a) partition(s)? If so, which? If not, which files/directories are removed; What exactly IS deleted? Second, how would I do a data reset through ADB?
My screen is basically broken. It works for a split second when first starting up (cold boot), and flickers off and doesn't turn on. Everything else works. I'm planning to resell for parts; I think I've invested way too much for this phone (screen broke before, and then got stolen, and now broken screen again). I would like to erase all data on the phone. I would normally do this through Clockwork recovery, but can't on the account of being blind due to broken screen.
I did come across this thread, but it still left me questions. Is reformatting system necessary? How would reflash my ROM via ADB? What about wiping Dalvik cache? Is dalvik stored within the cache partition?
As for the phone itself:
Samsung Galaxy S Epic 4G (Sprint)
RandomROM Thunkderhawk 3.5
USB Debugging enabled.

I bought an Inc on Friday and I love it, best phone I've ever owned. Although my Eris, being my first android, will always hold a place in my heart, lol. My question to the brilliant minds here, If I factory reset and wipe data will it unroot my Eris? I'm selling my Eris tomorrow and advertised it as rooted. I just want to make sure it will still be rooted once I reset/wipe to remove all my info, contacts, etc. P.S. Wanted to thank all the wonderful users in here who have helped me understand and love the android OS. Scary Alien, Erisuer1, Frisco, Dooglad, and everyone else who I haven't mentioned. You're all class acts and I wouldn't know half of what I know if it wasn't for ALL of you

If you do it through the phones own settings whats the difference? Or should you just do it under the Clockwork recovery to be safe? Either way you wont lose root right?

I recently updated my android to 4.3. A lot of people say that if you get a big update, it is the best to do a factory reset for faster performance. Is that true?
If that is the case, is there a way to do a factory reset and keep some data of some apps? Like example, i have an app that I spend my money on to buy ingame items and such. If i do a factory reset, all my ingame items will be gone and have to restart everything.
is there a 100% safe backup and do a factory reset for me to keep my app data?

I have a couple different devices to sell (one on stock JB 4.1.2 and one on CM 10.2.1) and I would prefer not to factory reset them. If I go through each individual app and clear its data and cache and also delete any accounts I have set up (e.g., Facebook, Gmail), does that get rid on my identifying information the same as a factory reset would?

First, my phone info: Galaxy S2 I9100, ICS 4.0.3
My question: How do you restore app data from Google servers after a factory reset?
When I upgraded from Gingerbread to ICS, the phone warned me I would be losing all my data. Fortunately under "Settings - Back up and reset" I had checked the "Back up my data" as well as the "Automatic restore" options. When I completed the upgrade to ICS I not only automatically retained all my app data, but I didn't even have to re-download any apps. All my apps I had on Gingerbread, along with all the data, had been successfully and automatically carried over to ICS.
Recently I've been having issues with my home button. After rebooting and some other troubleshooting, I decided to factory reset my phone. Again I made sure the "Back up my data" and "Automatic restore" options were checked. When I completed the factory reset it was like I just powered on my phone for the first time (OBVIOUSLY this is to be expected as I performed a Factory Reset).
Under the "Automatic restore" check box it states "When reinstalling an application, backed up settings and data will be restored". So I began to download and reinstall the apps I had before. The problem is NONE of the apps restored with the data I had backed up to Google servers. Did I do something wrong?
I'm a bit irked because I believe I received the exact same "you're going to lose your data" warning when I upgraded to ICS AND when I performed this recent factory reset. The difference is when I upgraded I got all my stuff back, so I figured after the factory reset, when I reinstalled my apps I'd get the data back too. I think it's only fair if Google really WILL restore data after an upgrade, but NOT restore data after a factory reset they should annotate that in their warning. Also maybe include a statement like, "After performing a factory reset you will not be able to retrieve app data from Google Servers. We recommend installing a third party app to save your important app data." But instead you get the same warning with two different results.

My galaxy s4 has recently been very slow so I thought that I would try a factory data reset to clear some things up. However, my phone is rooted. Now when I looked around on some other forums it seemed as though that I didn't have to worry about factory resetting the phone while it was rooted. But when I went ahead and did so it no longer will boot. Its stuck in the boot loop/download mode/ whatever you may call it. I can't seem to flash a recovery file through Odin either. My phone is gone now.

Yesterday I tried to install a custom ROM on my device (HTC Evo 3D GSM Europe) for the first time and it took close to 12 hours to get it from ICS 4.0.4 to ICS 4.0.3 (when my intention was actually JB 4.2). Let's just say that forgot to backup his Shipped ROM, then installed JB, was incompatible with the boot loader, tried desperately to find a compatible shipped RUU that worked with the CID, spent countless hours searching in xda-developers and then finally settled for a custom ICS ROM until some time in the future.
Now on to my problem. Prior to my Factory Reset, I had moved all applications to the SD card. A simple look-over in the file system indicates all the data is still there, but reinstalling the applications and even moving them back to the SD card doesn't seem to give them access to the prior data (saved games, stored profiles, lists and anything else I might have done). It's as if the app has been installed for the first time.
Is there any way to "link" the data back to the apps (after yesterday's endeavor I ended up with a rooted phone, at least)?

I rooted my phone to uninstall some bloatware system apps several months ago. Now, I need to perform a factory data reset just to remove the Google account associated with it. Is it safe to do so or will I lose any further system apps or worse, brick my phone? I have the apk's of the system apps that I removed, but for some reason I am not able to restore/install all of them. I used ES File Explorer back then to remove those apps. [My phone is Samsung GT-I5801 running Android 2.2]

I just did a factory restore on my Vibrant and afterwards, I noticed that there are folders of apps I used to have before the factory restore. Some folders are...EpicFail, FridayEscape, etc. I thought by doing a factory restore that all data were wiped oud. I would like a clean wipe of the hard drive and reload of the factory stuff. No rooting.

I have not yet gotten the OTA update for 2.2 on my phone, but I am assuming that it will be here soon and once I do get it I am also assuming that I will most likely need to do a factory reset after reading all the problems that members on here are encountering. Now I already have AppBrain installed and have my apps synced to my online account so I can easily download them again if I do a factory reset. My questions however though are the following 1) Is there any way to preserve application data such as the notes I had in a notepad application before doing a factory reset? 2) Is there any way to keep calendar data and contact data if they were inputted as phone data entries and not synced via Google?
