I been trying to root it with Superoneclick and with DoomLord Zergrush, I keep failing all attempts, as I did research on this, I found out some info that says it is not possibe to root Gingerbread 2.3.6 (what I have) and that I need to dowgrade to 2.3.5 or to froyo (which is it?) , but SamMobile does not have Froyo available for download anymore...
So basically, I need to know how to root 2.3.6, main reason is I want to be able to change my Tab's HotSpot channel, and I read that this is only possible on a rooted GTab.
( Secondary question: On a quick note, is it possible to upgrade to HoneyComb/is it worth it?)
General :: Galaxy 551 / Gingerbread 2.3.6 - How To Modify System File
May 18, 2012 I upgraded my Galaxy 551 to Gingerbread 2.3.6. All went well. Unfortunately it seems to be a common side effect that the Z and Y keys (and some others) get swapped. The fix is apparently to modify the file /system/usr/keychars/sec_keypad.kcm.bin. The ideal thing is to put the old file from before the FW update back in, but of course I don't have that anymore! But the existing one can apparently be altered. If I can copy it to the SD card I can alter it in a hex editor and put it back.
So, I rooted my phone with that one click application, and that went OK too. I installed root explorer and found the file. There were also some others in the same folder I may be able to use. But, I cant make the folder R/W (pressing the button does nothing) so cant do anything with the file. I also tried Super Manager with no luck.

If 1ghz, 4 inch screen, and 512 are min requirements.. This leads me to believe, that by the holidays, this phone will no longer be considered a superphone, there probably will be a 2 ghz. 4.3 inch, 1gb phone out. Why do I bring this up? Well I'm asking because, for those people who do not wish to root, and are depending on t-mobile/samsung updates to 3.0, what if samsung never releases a 3.0 update for the vibrant. This is the only reason I'm thinking about this phone.Just reading various sights, seems like google has made it clear, gingerbread 3.0 will be for superphones, and all other phones will stick to 2.2/2.1. I'm thinking by holiday season, samsung is going to put this phone in the "I'm sorry, you are stuck with 2.1/2.2 cateogry" because they probably will have a superphone out by then.If you can't get 3.0 on this phone via a true update, is it worth it? How can anyone find out, what Samsung has planned?I guess I don't want the behold II issue to happen on this phone.

For example, I tried updating my Tmobile G2's ROM from Gingerbread to ICS , then to Jellybean and after hours of tinkering with the display settings my eyes were still hurting. When I gave up and went back to Gingerbread, then my eyes were fine looking at the screen.
My question is: what exactly changed in the display settings in the newer version of the Android oS? Except....
The contacts application (both dialer and 'people') that comes with ICS is not as good as the Gingerbread versions. Obviously the ICS versions look prettier but with the older versions you could:
- swype left on a contact to message (brilliant)
- swype right on a contact to call (brilliant)
- easily access the contacts app from within the dialer via the tabs at the top
My question is... is it possible to use the gingerbread versions of the contacts and dialer apps on ICS... if so, HOW?

ICS has been absolutely terrible on the phone, everything lags (2 seconds or more for a response after tapping on any icon/button etc...)
the already short battery life has been cut in half (2.5 hours to go from 100 - 50% with minimal useage)
So i want to revert to gingerbread. Is it possible to do without rooting my phone? as i plan on selling it, and i want it to be as "Stock" as possible.
