General :: Manual Rooting Using Gingerbreak?
May 22, 2012
I'm working on a toolkit for the optimus me (p350), more exactly on the rooting part, but I've got a problem, I can't find a tutorial of how to do a manual root using adb shell with the gingerbreak exploit.

I followed everything from the [HOWTO] Root the Atrix 2 thread and i tried both 1 click method and the manual method. When I type in
---> adb shell (only type this if you are no longer in shell@targa)
---> mount -o rw,remount /dev/null /system
in the cmd, shell not found and Segmentation fault came out.

I pressed hime, down key, and power to boot into the recovery console on my virgin mobile Optimus V. Looked around and told the phone to reboot when I didn't see what I was looking for. Phone was rooted previously using Gingerbreak.APK v1.20 After reboot phone was no longer rooted? Also programs and such were deleted, but super user app remained. Downloaded and installed gingerbreak again. Fire it up and I get a big, fat, steamy pile of "Could Not Extract Assets!" error message. Tried a couple of fixes I saw on the developers site, but nothing seems to be working for me. How to get my phone rooted again. I have Terminal Emulator on my phone, or I can do it through my computer's cmd window. Either way works for me. I've been sifting through and trying all kinds of stuff for the last 5 days.

I think I'll root tonight. Btw, a lot of the guides and threads I see are pre-ota2.2 so i don't know if that's the safest way. So I am going to root using the D2 method here. As I take it there isn't an easier method for the DX right now. Then from there I 1. Select bootstrap recovery 2. Reboot Recovery 3. When the recovery loads, move down and select "backup/restore" select backup. 4. Press camera button after backup to reboot. 5. Find a theme. Put on sd card. Right? Do I need to select bootstrap recovery every time i want to install a new theme before I hit reboot recovery? I know I need rom manager regardless, is it better to backup on RM or Koush? Or both? Titanium backup will save all my apps, even paid apps correct? Is there anyway my titanium backup can be erased? And so all my contacts are automatically backed up to my gmail account or do I do that myself?

I have 3 Gmail accounts that are constantly syncing and its draining my battery. Where is the option to set accounts to manual? As in, I'll refresh when I care.
I've found the option for number of days to sync (1-All), but that's not what I want. Did they move this? I used to be able to find it...

I have a Star S9920 unit. It's a MT65xx device - a S3Mini clone. I have TWRP installed on it but I did something universally stupid. I did NOT make a backup. So I wiped everything and now the ZIP file that was supposed to contain an updated ROM won't flash.
ZIP contents:
boot.img
DSP_BL
EBR1
logo.bin
MBR
MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt
preloader.bin
recovery.img
system.img
uboot.bin
At the time being I am unable to boot into TWRP and powering the phone up just gives me a blank black screen. I do, however, have ADB access(o.0).
Edit: Through ADB I managed to get back to recovery. ... so it's Square 1 again. "adb reboot-bootloader" gets me a blank screen and no fastboot, so I can't fastboot my system.img
P.S. A TWRP backup file from a clean ROM installtion would be heavenly Since ADB was working I used MTK Droid Root & Tools 2.4.6 to flash boot.img and recovery.img (re-flashed TWRP) I then extracted my system.img using ext2explore-2.2.71 to a local windows folder (in my case C:system ) Then I just wrote " adb push C:system /system" and watched the magic happen. One reboot later the phone was up and running.

Some apps ask for more permissions than I want to give them.
With DroidWall I can take internet permissions away from individual apps, which is great for all those app that demand internet access even though they work fine without it. But what if I want to remove other permissions, such as access to my location or my contacts?
There is a manual way to edit unwanted permissions out of .apk files, but this method is not meant for human consumption. Is there an app that lets me allow/deny permissions per app?

This update appears to have been pulled (probably temporarily) as an OTA update. edit: The update is now available again OTA. This guide will still work if you prefer to install manually, or don't get the OTA offer. This update is for stock froyo release 2.09.405.8 only. You can apply it manually by following these steps:
Backup anything you need, in case of problems
Download this file and put it on your sdcard
Rename the file to 'update.zip' (ensure it is not update.zip.zip)
Power down the phone
Start the phone in recovery (press vol down and power together, then select recovery)
After recovery loads press vol up and power together
Select to apply update.zip
If you have debranded your phone you MUST have your goldcard in the phone.

This is the OTA JI6 not leaked, etc. It's super easy, don't be intimidated but DO read and follow the step by step instructions. rhcp 0112345 over at XDA has posted the OTA update JI6. Remember rhcp0112345 spent time and money to bring this update to us so it would be a nice gesture to donate $1 to his paypal if you avail yourself of his work. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?

I recently began using K-9 Mail. It seems to have good potential, but I can't find any sort of set up manual. One of my questions is what is polling and how does it differ from push email. I come from a BB and understand Push, but polling and setting it up is confusing me.

I am using a ListView with a SimpleAdapter. Once data is populated into it I would like to set the first item in the list. This can be done by clicking on the list item on the screen. I want to just call the method directly after I populate the list so that when you see the UI its already done. My only problem is getting the View from the ListView. I noticed its children are all null but the SimpleAdapter has items in it. When I try to get those items they are not Views and I am not able to match the method call of protected void onListItemClick(ListView l, View v, int position, long id)

I've successfully done most of the steps to manually deodex. However, when I get to the last step, it says Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:UsersSteven>adb shell
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
This is what the last step says to do: (and I get stopped with the above message)
Open a command prompt, and do the following:
Code:
adb shell
su
stop
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cp /sdcard/done_app/* /system/app/
cp /sdcard/done_frame/* /system/framework/
rm /system/app/*.odex
rm /system/framework/*.odex
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
reboot

I promise i searched, but from my phone it's a bit limited. I manually updated to 2.2 at the end of August. However, earlier this week, I got the following message from Verizon. Should I pursue it, or will it brick my phone? If I don't do this, I'll likely hard reset my phone. I've been having a few hicups lately. Nothing to write home about, but still annoying. I've read that some suggest a hard reset after updating due to similar situations.
