General :: Change Phone Keypad
Feb 22, 2014
I'm new to smartphones. I hate the keypad on the calling app. Running 4.3 on xperia z1 compact. Just can't hit the right numbers. I notice that the numeric keypad in a number of apps is a lot more usable, Because there's physical separation between the numbers. I've tried searching around the subject, but just get info on text keypads, not calling keypads. Can I configure my calling app keypad?

Just got an HTC Magic and must say I am really impressed with Android so far. I have one small issue, however, in regards to special characters.
I prefer the keypad with T9 as it is much faster for me than both the compact QWERTY and the full version. For some reason "", "" and "" seems to be hidden away in contrast to ordinary phones. Usually, the 2-button ("a", "b", "c") holds "" and "" (written "ae" and "aa") and the 6-button ("m", "n" and "o") has "" (written "oe"). These vowels is quite common in Danish (and other Scandinavian languages). The compact QWERTY has the "", "" and "" placed on-screen, which makes me wonder why these characters is so difficult to type for the other keyboard types. If these characters were added to the keypad buttons (like any non-Android keypad-based device), it would be quite easy to write (and of course these extra characters would only show up when using a language where they apply).
Where do you suggest such a change? Is it already pluggable or configurable?

I'm running 4.3 on my AT&T (not sure if that is relevant) Galaxy S3. A few weeks ago I updated it to 4.3 when I saw a message that an update was available.
I keep a lot of work contacts in the phone but over the years I've built a collection of "contacts" that have no first/last name but are simply just a "Company" field with a phone and fax number.
Before 4.3 I could use the keypad in the stock Phone app to spell out company names (e.g. I could pull up the number for "XYZ Widgets, Inc." by typing "XYZ", just like searching for a person's name).
Ever since 4.3 I've been unable to do this. I go into my contacts and they are still shown there. But they do not show up when I'm typing them out. So I have a workaround but it's cumbersome.
Any settings I can change to try to fix this? I took some screen captures of the menu options I have under "call settings" in the Phone app. Link: [URL]

When I make phone calls, the default screen is the large Droid with the Mute, Speaker and other buttons. I always end up having to press the Keypad button to get the phone keypad to display (checking voicemail or skipping voicemail greetings)Is there anyway to have the keypad be the default screen during phone calls? It seems like the keypad is used much more than Speaker or Mute.

Today my wife upgraded to the HTC Wildfire - so far it's great, but I seem to have come across a small problem, and wondered if anyone had any advice please?
When typing status update, or email on facebook app, or being online through hotmail, gmail, or any other site where you are typing a lot, or where you have username on one line, and password on the other, the keypad seems to be massive, and gets in the way so you can't see what you're typing?

i find the phone key pad better than QWERTY/compact QWERTY bec i do most of my texting one hand.. I'm using HTC_IME right now but its still slow to me.. it highlights the words while typing.. i tried betterkeyboard, touchpal, swiftkey, and a lot of keyboard apps but very few has the phone keypad keyboard on it.. and those who have it (betterkeyboard) responses very slow..

Is it just me, or does the Epic not render the phone keypad in landscape? i.e. the keypad disappears when you rotate the phone screen from portrait to landscape. I'm using Launcher Pro. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Is it possible to make the keypad on the phone not vibrate? I have haptic feedback disabled and the only two things that vibrate are the unlock (which I dont mind) and the keypad on the phone. I would really love to turn that off. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I do not want my phone to vibrate when dialing a phone number on the stock dialer. I've been looking for the right menu item that controls this unwanted (on my part) feature of my otherwise perfect Evo. Anybody know where to find the setting that turns off the phone dialer vibrations?

I've had an HTC Desire for a few months now, and I just can't get used to full keyboard touchscreen style text entry. I like old school phone keypad style T9 text entry - I find it much faster (well, once I've entered lots of extra words!) than a keyboard and like to be able to send texts with one hand.
However I'm not happy with the stock android keypad, and my phone has just received a new update that makes it EVEN WORSE.
For example, it appears to in fact be impossible to enter accented characters (e.g.). As I occasionally communicate in languages other than english this is horrendous. With the new update they've also removed the shortcuts to ! and ? and replaced them with the voice recognition button, a feature in Android which I have found to be totally pointless (most of the time after speaking something it just says 'processing' for ages, then either fails or comes up with nonsense. Far quicker to type! Whats the point?!?). It's also added some kind of auto correction which I can't work out how to turn off which will prioritise words that I haven't even typed because I guess it thinks thats a more popular word and I misspelled it and I then have to go into 'more words' to chose the bloody word I typed in to start with!
However it seems all the other alternative keyboards are more designed to replace qwerty. I tried SwiftKey for a little while and it's clever, but it's still all querty and I'm not sure I like all the autocorrection - often correcting something that WAS correct into something that isn't!
About to try HTC_IME once I've worked out how to install it, but are there any other phone-keypad-style text entry apps out there to replace the stock android? Just anything that works like, say, an old Nokia or Sony would be totally great. That can't be too much to ask can it?

I turned off haptic feedback, but when I dial a number it vibrates with every keypress. This is NOT the keyboard, but the numeric onscreen keypad when making a call. How do I turn this off? Super annoying, makes the phone lag when dialing fast. Thanks.

On my laptop using Gmail I can go to Chat-> Call phone -> and a keypad will pop up so that I can dial out. I want to be able to do the same thing on my Android phone. I have the Gmail and Talk apps but I do not see the same Chat/Call Phone/Keypad option that I see on my laptop. How I can get the keypad to show on my phone so that I can dial out? Do I need to download Google"+" mobile to be able to do this?

For an EditText box, the user should only be entering valid numbers, so I am using android:inputType="numberDecimal". Unfortunately, the soft keyboard that Android brings up has numbers only along the top row, while the next three rows have various other symbols (dollar sign, percent sign, exclamation mark, space, etc). Since the number Decimal only accepts numbers 0-9, negative sign, and decimal point, it would make more sense to use the "phone" soft keyboard (0-9 in a 3x3 grid, plus some other symbols). This would make the buttons larger and easier to hit (since it's a 4x4 grid rather than a 10x4 grid in the same screen area). Unfortunately, using android:inputType="phone" allows non-numeric characters such as parentheses I have attempted to use android:inputType="numberDecimal|phone", but the numberDecimal aspect of the bit flag seems to be ignored. I have also tried using android:inputType="phone" in combination with android:digits="0123456789-.", but that still allows multiple negative signs or decimal points (inputType="number" has really good error checking for things like that, and won't let the user even type it in). I have also tried using android:inputType="phone" in the xml layout file, while using a DigitsKeyListener in the Java code, but then that just uses the default number soft keyboard (the one that has numbers only along top row) (it appears to set InputType.TYPE_CLASS_NUMBER, which voids the InputType.TYPE_CLASS_PHONE set by the XML layout). Writing a custom IME wouldn't work, since the user would have to select the IME as a global option outside the app. Is there any way to use the "phone" style soft keyboard while also using the "number" restrictions on what is entered?

when the Optimus V came out, I found a thread either on here or XDA about how to change the model number to think it was a different phone. I did this to allow for the usage of Netflix, and I think I may have changed it to a Nexus model..
My current phone, the Optimus F7, is rooted and running stock Android 4.1.2 JB. (I rooted in order to allow for uninhibited tethering from my carrier.)I have browsed here, XDA, and countless pages on Bing and Google... yet I have found nothing about doing this... to any phone. My only desire (not the phone) is to make my F7 think it's - at least - a Galaxy S3. Many of my friends, coworkers and family have the S3 and I figure out things and solve problems on their phones, yet I find nothing on my own, so I simply wanted to turn it into an S3.
I am aware that I could simply get an S3, but I have had horrid luck with Samsung devices (not software) in the past, but have had wonderful luck with LG devices.
