General :: Adjusting Storage Allocation (SD / USB /Apps)
Dec 14, 2011
Problem discovered while installing Navfree. Got the error message "not enough space". I cant move it to the SD card or anything as I can't install it even.
I have 25Gb of available space but less than 2Gb for apps? I'd like to use all internal storage for apps and the external card for media. How I set that up?
I have a Galaxy S2 Epic (SPH-D710) stock ROM, rooted with the zermax kernel and fited with a Sandisk 16Gb class 4 micro sd card.
Settings>Applications>Manage applications>All
112Mb used of 1.9Gb available.
Settings>Storage>USB storage
Total space is 11.5Gb and Available space 11.5Gb
Settings>Storage>SD card
Total space 14.83Gb (aka 16Gb!) and Available space 14.81Gb.

Before rooting my device I had read there's the possibility of adjusting the permissions or even feeding false data to apps.
Today I found such an app to allow me to do so.
Both xposed apk and xprivacy ! I downloaded both which is needed. Anyway before configuring to operate there was a warning to have backup of whole system and know how to recover. Further warning said there was possibility of soft brick and bootloop. I immediately deleted them both. So did I do the right thing?

My daughter got her tablet 2 months ago. She had about 30 apps on it. Played on it Wed night & all was fine. Somewhere between Wed night & Fri night all of the apps disappeared. Today, it made me retype in her google account & all of that(like you do when you FIRST get it) I tried going to Play Store to re-download them & it says insufficient storage. I then went to settings>storage & 0.00 is available! How can her tablet be full when she only has the factory preset apps on it now? I'm attempting to power off & back on. it's taking 20 minutes to power down. Should I just factory reset it?

I know Dropbox is basically the dominant force in the cloud market but still there are some other competitors.
The closest competitor would be SugarSync but I really hate their interface and I think their service is slow and terrible.
I was able to find a list of some good cloud apps here but I was wondering if there was one that I haven't heard about:

The problem is when I install apps (apk's or from google play ) they are installed on internal memory (2GB) and this caused many problems for me . I want my apps to be installed directly by default on usb storage ( 13.20GB)
Note I dont have micro sd in my device ...
In apps ... i tried ( move to sd card ) but it didn't work i assume for not having sd card in the device ? right I tried also programs like move to SD or something it didn't work.
I want apps to be installed directly on the biggest memory ( usb storage (13.20 gb) not the small internal one (2gb).

I'm getting an "insufficient storage" error on installing apps from Google Play (even small 6mb apps). I find if i delete several apps and run it again it works (there is apparently 470MB free despite this).
I've seen references to changing settings so that Google Play installs to the SD card but cant figure out which apply here. And also to clearing the cache for applications (in the TWRP app perhaps?).
I've run the jmz script from the Nabi 2 root thread, but I think I'm missing a step or two (although apps do in fact install, which they wouldn't before).

I've bought this chinese clone of the SIII, it's a MT6575. It's great except for the internal storage, which supposedly is 500MB but there seems to be an invisible SD storage which is 2GB. It's really confusing... When I go to Settings -> Storage there are 3 memories: "Internal Storage" (claims to be 4GB but it's fake, it's actually 500MB), "Phone Storage" (claims to be 16.5GB but it's probably 2GB), and finally my SD, "SD Card" (32GB).
The thing is, I'm having problems downloading big apps because apps go to "Internal Storage" which is 500MB only, and which files are stored in the "Phone Storage" (maybe internal & phone are actually the same?). However when I go to Settings -> Apps, on the "Downloaded" tab, the apps are in "Internal Storage" (500MB), and on the "On SD Card" tab, it shows that apps are in "Phone Storage" (the ones I moved to SD). This means my 32GB SD isn't being used by the system when I send apps to SD probably.
Also, my 32GB SD card is found in /mnt/sdcard2, and the /mnt/sdcard... I don't know which storage is that.
So basically all this is happening because I tried to Link2SD with my 32GB SD doing all the 2 partitions stuff and so, but Link2SD never detects the "secondary SD" which is the 32GB SD, as this fake SD card, "Phone Storage", is probably what the programs thinks to be the SD card.

On my galaxy tab 2 7, with Android 4.3, I have two choices of memory storage, emulated and extSdard. Im wondering if the emulated is actually on a like Cloud system or are the files still on my tablet? Also, if emulated storage is for multiple users, does this mean another device is connected besides my tablet?

The NDK download page notes that, "Typical good candidates for the NDK are self-contained, CPU-intensive operations that don't allocate much memory, such as signal processing, physics simulation, and so on."I came from a C background and was excited to try to use the NDK to operate most of my OpenGL ES functions and any native functions related to physics, animation of vertices, etc... I'm finding that I'm relying quite a bit on Native code and wondering if I may be making some mistakes. I've had no trouble with testing at this point, but I'm curious if I may run into problems in the future.
For example, I have game struct defined (somewhat like is seen in the San-Angeles example). I'm loading vertex information for objects dynamically (just what is needed for an active game area) so there's quite a bit of memory allocation happening for vertices, normals, texture coordinates, indices and texture graphic data... just to name the essentials. I'm quite careful about freeing what is allocated between game areas.Would I be safer setting some caps on array sizes or should I charge bravely forward as I'm going now?

I have an Activity that is running out of memory in CreateSurface. The logcat looks like this: 10-04 17:55:52. 574 : ERROR/SurfaceFlinger(1086): createSurface() failed, generateId = -12 10-04 17:55:52.574: WARN/ Window Manager (1086): OutOfResourcesException creating surface 10-04 17:55:52.574: INFO/WindowManager (1086): Out of memory for surface! Is there a way to cause the application to do a core dump and is there a tool for analyzing dumps? I have SDK version 8, which does not allow simultaneous use of DDMS and the Eclipse debugger so I need to get creative.

I have a Motorola Moto G 8GB which is running very low on storage (only about 800mb left). This phone does not take Micro SD cards but it comes with 50GB Google Drive storage. However i haven't used this at all. I am wondering whether i could download android apps and games to google drive, dropbox etc. Games like Real Racing take up about 1GB so i cannot download it to my phone. Can i download it to the Cloud? If this is not possible, is there any way that i could save the app data on the cloud. E.g. The Simpsons: Tapped Out is about 37mb to download off the play store, but then you must download the updates etc which are about another 250mb. is there anyway to save this 250mb on the cloud. Or any other games data.

I have some questions regarding the code below for camera preview application.
1. How does surfaceCreated() and CreateSurface() relate? Is this surface created via createSurface() from SurfaceFlinger client to SurfaceFlinger server? If so, there must be 2 buffers (frame buffers from display driver if there is how acceleration or if it is the emulator, it will be from ashmem) associated with this surface: surface BB (for composition) and surface FB (for display).
2. How does the rendering buffer (frame buffer BB and frame buffer FB) get allocated in the camera preview application? Are they allocated by the application?
3. How does this surface relate to the preview buffers? Are the preview buffers allocated by the Camera Service during startPreview?
private class CameraSurfaceView extends SurfaceView implements SurfaceHolder.Callback {
private SurfaceHolder mHolder; private Camera camera = null;
public CameraSurfaceView(Context context) { super(context);
mHolder = getHolder(); mHolder.addCallback(this);
mHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS);
} public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) {
camera = Camera.open(); try {
camera.setPreviewDisplay(mHolder);
} catch (Exception e) { Log.e("Camera", "Failed to set camera preview display", e);
} } }

On Android 1.5, using the Allocation Tracker I see that every time I call TextView.setText() with a StringBuilder as first argument, a String gets allocated from the following call stack (first line is last call):
java.lang.AbstractStringBuilder toString java.lang.StringBuilder toString android.text.TextUtils stringOrSpannedString android.widget.TextView setText
I tried specifying the buffer type with setText(strBuilder, TextView.BufferType.NORMAL) but it doesn't change anything.
Is there a way to avoid this allocation?

I am currently considering to develop an application for processing of images captured by the camera of mobile phones using the Android OS. Before I make the decision to go forth, I have done some research and found out there are some complaints regarding the limits of the memory allocated by the Dalvik VM, which seem to be limiting to applications that require manipulation and processing of images. Which limits should i have in mind if i would have to process for example 3 photos taken with the camera, in my process, applying filters, transforms and other types of mathematical operations?I would like to know if it is possible to change the default value of
memory allocated by the Dalvik VM for each application (this default is of 16 MB), in any way, using the Android 1.6 OS. Has anybody looked into this that can help me out please? I have also read in the Android 2.1 compatibility definition document
(available here: http://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/source.android.com/pt-PT//compatibility/android-2.1-cdd.pdf )that it is possible to change the allocation of memory by the Dalvik VM from 16 MB to 24 MB or even a bigger amount if it is necessary, but t is not mentioned anywhere how this can be done. If someone has looked into those issues before.

I can't find a way to access the internal 8GB storage from the phone to put files there, or to open/use files there, for that matter.I can see it from the PC if I mount the Droid, but can't from the phone itself.please point out the obvious thing that I'm missing. I've tried Astro, Root Explorer, and the Files program that came w/the D2, none of them appear to allow me to access the 8gb storage.

Maybe this is more of an android question, not sure, but here it goes: so the incredible has 6+ gb of onboard storage, primarily for media. if i buy a micro sdhc card (say 8 gb), will the music/video player apps see both storage devices and merge all songs/videos into 1 selection screen, or is it like a real computer/os and i have to swap folders/drives? if it's the former, will it be seemless? what happens to play lists? can i have a play list that spans on-board songs and songs stored on the card?

Is anyone else experiencing problems downloading and running apps from the market due to low memory issues? Why did they only put 512MB of internal memory for app storage on this Epic when the AT&T galaxy version got 8GB of internal memory in addition to the 16GB micro Sd card???
My memory is full now, and without android 2.2 I can't move apps to the SD card. They should have provided all of their galaxy class phones with the 8GB internal memory.
