General :: 4.4 (KitKat) Soft Menu Button - Can It Be Disabled?

Dec 15, 2013

So as you might already know, Google is trying to kill the hard menu button by integrating a soft menu button inside all apps.

Is there a way to disable this? I'm running the latest cyanogen (i9300) and I can't find a way to disable it. It just takes space and I don't even use it.

General :: 4.4 (KitKat) soft menu button - can it be disabled?

Android :: Create A Soft Home - Back - Menu Button

Nov 9, 2009

I am working on a device that does not have a hardware Home, Back or Menu button. I am trying to create a soft keyboard with only these three keys but I have not been able to get it working. Does anyone have any insight into my problem?

I first looked into injecting keypresses into a WindowManager but this functionality seems to have been removed.

I then looked at creating a custom soft keyboard but that will not work either. Custom soft keyboards only inject their input into the text fields they are attached to. I can't send a Home, Back or Menu keypress to the Android system.

I finally got the Home button working by using this intent to tell Android to go to the Home screen: Intent HomeIntent = new Intent(); HomeIntent.setAction(Intent.ACTION_MAIN); HomeIntent.addCategory(Intent.CATEGORY_HOME);

Unfortunately, I have not found an Intent to send for Menu and Back.

KitKat 4.4 :: USB 3.0 In Galaxy Note 3 Disabled?

Apr 29, 2014

I went upgrading from Jelly Bean to KitKat 4.4.2 on my Note-3 (T-Mobile), and since upgrading, the Note-3 no longer transfer data at USB 3.0 speed anymore, only regular 2.0 speed. i tried using new 3.0 cables, still the same issue, and my other 3.0 devices work in the USB 3.0 port on my computer with no problem. And on my phone, even the menu choice for 3.0 no longer shows as a third optioned. i downloaded and install Kies 3 and the USB drivers from Samsungs website, the same with there Galaxy Note-3 after upgrading to KitKat.

General :: How To Add Widget - Find Menu Button

Nov 16, 2012

1st off, I am brand new to Android, have had this phone for 1 day.

All instructions I find say 1 of 2 things, either tap and hold the home screen until I see a "+add widgets", or swipe left to right until I see the menu button. I also read that the menu button should look like 3 vertical bars.

Tapping and holding the home screen only gives me options to add wallpapers, nothing else. I cannot find anything like a menu button. When I go into settings I can find nothing that has to do with adding widgets.

How to find this menu button, what the icon for menu will look like?

General :: HTC One X Style Virtual Menu Button Patch?

Oct 5, 2012

I tried to re-implement what HTC did with the One X, One S, etc, where they have physical back, home, recent apps keys, and a virtual menu button pops up under apps that need a menu button. I don't have an Android device, so I was only able to test it under the emulator, I have only tested it with the Facebook app, but it seems to work fine.

The patch is against AOSP 4.1.1, to activate it in the emulator, set hw.mainKeys=yes and hw.menuButton=no in hardware.ini. For a real device, you'd need to set config_showNavigationBar to false and config_showLegacyMenuButton to true.

Because this is just a proof of concept, it pops up the entire ICS navigation bar with all four buttons instead of just the menu button. But that's not hard to fix.

Android :: Soft Home - Menu - Back Keys In Status Bar

I have a device with no hard buttons, on which I need to get Android running. The basic port is done, but I need to provide access to Home, Menu, and Back. General :: Acer A100 - Device Doesn't Have Hardware Menu Button?

Apr 13, 2012

I've installed several apps that are supposed to have features that I can't even find. For example, I installed "Writer". This is supposed to have text formatting features (bold, italic, font size). But, after highlighting some text, I can't find anything that triggers a "Format" menu. A long tap on selected text will bring up a Cut & Paste menu. But if there's a Format menu, I haven't found it, yet.

I'm using Writer as an example, but I've tried half a dozen apps now that are listed as having certain features. Sometimes the program menu is the little checkerboard icon next to the Honeycomb task switcher at the bottom of the screen, but on many apps this menu is empty of anything useful. Some programs have an icon on the top of the screen that triggers a menu, but on others I've tapped on everything I can find and found no extra controls.

Is there some common screen gesture that I haven't discovered yet? Are developers listing future features that don't exist yet? Did Gingerbread have some context menu feature that's missing in Honeycomb? And is there some reason developers don't bother to provide a paragraph or two explaining how to use their product?

btw - I have an Acer A100 7 inch tablet, running generic Honeycomb 3.2 and downloading apps from GooglePlay. My device doesn't have a hardware Menu button, maybe that's the problem?

Android :: Main Activity Grayed-out / Disabled On Back Button - Cause This Problem?

Jun 25, 2010

I have a problem on going back (clicking the Back button) from sub-activity to main activity: from my main activity I launch a new one (with passing some extras). code...

In the started activity I am getting data from extras and showing, etc. So everything works very well until I click Back button to return back to main activity. Then main activity appears but directly after - grays-out. I can't do anything there anymore... This "grayed-out" style looks something like there should be a dialog displayed, but there is no dialog shown, just the whole activity is pushed down/disabled instead...

One another interesting thing I noticed - that activity is still alive in background, because if I click "Search" button the Quick Search Box appears on top of my activity and if I click Back button then (to cancel it) - it disappears and my activity then becomes fully functional again (gray-out effect simply disappears...)

Tried watching logcat, but it shows nothing useful, no exceptions thrown, just this text always comes up:

W/KeyCharacterMap( 564): No keyboard for id 0
W/KeyCharacterMap( 564): Using default keymap: /system/usr/keychars/qwerty.kcm.bin

What could cause this problem?

Android :: Virtual/soft Buttons For Home - Menu - Back - Search - Always On Top

Jun 9, 2010

How can I make an app or maybe service that looks like (Nexus One touch buttons) for the navigation keys (Home, menu,Back, Search)

The buttons should always be visibly and always stay on top and send the command to the app thats running.

Someone have ideas and sample codes how to do that?

*I see an app with name (Smart Taskmanager) wich always detect when you touch the right side of the screen and then detect when you slide the finger to left.

So I think its possible, with this function I think its possible to implementate the code to simulate the (Home, Meny, Back, Search) buttons.

*I also see and test an app wich show a "cracked display" always ontop so that tecnic maybe shold be useful to always show the buttons/bitmanp on top.

Thoose function, to show the button and catch the "touch event" and send the event to the active program, thats what i dont can figure out how to do.
