Android : Extend Droid's Default Gmail / Email Applications?

May 29, 2009

I would like to extend the Android platform's default Gmail/Email applications either by plugging into their ContentProvider or by using intent filters. Essentially, I want to be able to scan incoming emails for special rules that will trigger events in my Android application. If scanning emails automatically isn't possible, then I would at least like to add a menu item to the email viewer screen that would allow the user to flag the email content as needing to be scanned.

Does the Gmail/Email applications allow you to extend them in this way?

For future reference, besides finding sample code or reading documentation provided by the author of an application, is there a standard way of finding out what intents are available for my application to use? Like a tool maybe?

Motorola Droid :: Default Email - Contacts

Dec 23, 2009

Just realized that when I go into "Contacts" and select to email a contact that it is pulling up GMail rather than my Corporate Email client. All of my contacts are synced from my Outlook through my corporate Exchange server so I need to be sending the email from my corporate email. I've gone into corporate email and selected to make this the "default" email client, but it is still pulling up GMail when I select to email from Contacts. I also have the "Corporate Contacts" app that I downloaded from the Market. It syncs with Exchange as well, but it is also pulling up GMail when I select to email from there as well. Is there another default switch somewhere that I'm missing?

Motorola Droid X :: Undo Email Default Selection

Jul 17, 2010

I mistakenly selected one of two email accounts on my X -- as being the "Default"

This was a mistake, as I really should have kept the setting dynamic -- so I could chose to send from either account.

Now I can't undo that default setting -- nor can I even switch the default to the other email account.

Here's how I got to the menu in question:

GUI Messaging Icon > Left Menu Button > Messaging Settings > Email > Default Email Account

Anyone know how I can undo this default setting -- and put myself back in the position of being able to select which account to use dynamically?

Motorola Droid X :: DX Not Syncing All Email Accts / Won't Send Corporate Email?

Nov 2, 2010

I have searched and haven't been able to find any threads with one of my issues, so I apologize in advance if I missed one. Anyways, my DX has been working flawlessly since I got it back on 10/6. Sunday, 10/31, my DX quit syncing just my corporate Exchange 2003 emails, then yesterday it started not sending emails as well and now, this morning, it quit syncing my personal email. Corporate email will sync manually, just not push. I have rebooted several times, pulled the battery several times, and also deleted both my Exchange account and my personal account and re-added both and the problem still persists. I don't have any task killer apps installed and haven't recently added any apps since the issues started. Anyone have an idea what may be causing the lack of push (in and out) on both of my accounts?

Motorola Droid :: Yahoo Email - Getting Notifications Everytime When Get New Email

Jan 26, 2010

I just pulled the battery to do a reset last night after a lockup and today I'm getting notifications everytime I get a new email. it never used to do this and i figured it was just cause I didn't use the gmail. now I'm thinking that it just might be one of the background tasks that I was always killing. I recently switched to home++ and I didn't use the built in task killer all day. so I guess my question is, does anyone know which background task would control this so I don't kill it? also, is there a place to go in the settings to change the led color for email alerts?

Motorola Droid X :: Block Email / Add Email To Junk Folder

Sep 3, 2010

I'm starting to get junk mail sent directly to my phone through my hotmail email account. I have added both the sender and the senders domain to the list using Windows Live Mail Beta. These emails are still getting through to my Droid X. First, there are no option on the phone to block emails is there? And secondly, there is not an option to add emails to any junk folder on the phone either that I have found. Anyone else having this problem? I've tried both adding my email accounts through Corporate (for hotmail/msn) and the email option on the phone.

Android :: Default Email App

Sep 30, 2010

Did google write the default email app? Is the source code anywhere? i guess i'll have to fix it myself, because it is utter crap. loses my account settings weekly, and now, it is pulling in my gmail account bodies (that isn't even setup in that client) for the emails in my exchange account. brand new phone. shiny 2.1 os.... i know this is the dev site, so i'll just fix it myself and roll my own email client since google apparently is too busy fixing the bugs in cars nowadays to deliver decent applications that work.

Android :: Email Address As Default

I'm trying to use "note to self" and it records fine and I hit send, It then pops up email clients. if i choose, yahoo it doesn't autofill anything, if i choose the built in mail app it auto fills the subject and the message but it does not have my email address as a default, so I have to type it in every time. Since it is note to self, shouldn't it keep my email address in there. I haven't found a way to make it default. Any suggestions?

I have a POP, gmail and an exchange account.

I'll also sometimes have POP email keep coming back, sometimes 5+ times, after deleting it every time. It may be 30 minutes later, or hours later.

Android :: Setting Default Email App - And Disabling The Others

Nov 25, 2010

I have 3 email applications on my GarminAsus A50:

> Default email client
> Gmail
> K9 email client

All three have been setup with email accounts.

Is there a way to set K9 as my preferred email app? Because everytime I receive an email, I get three sets of notifications (one from each app)

For the moment I've disabled the email notifications from Gmail and the default mail, but they still run in the background checking for messages which is really just a waste of CPU power and battery life.

Anything to keep them from running at all?

Android :: Default Email Application Showing All Messages As New?

Mar 27, 2009

I need help finding the right email app.The default one is horrible. The problem I am having is that it doesn't differentiate new emails from old. Every time I open the inbox in any of my email accounts, it always shows all emails as new. I don't know which one's I read or not. It's not bad if it takes me directly to the email, but when I have emails for multiple inboxes, I don't know which ones have the new email. I called tmobile tech support and was told that unless I delete the read emails from the server, the phone will keep reloading them as new. On my old phone, the messages I read where marked as read and stayed that way. When I got a new email, it was clear which one it was because it was highlighted.

Also, I've just switched to the g1 from a business phone, so I'm really new to this still. The couple things that I would like to figure out how to do is, first, I would like to know how I can search my contacts both by name or business. I've transfered the contact info from outlook to the g1 and so I have both name and business information. However, when I search using the keyboard, I can only search by name. If I put in the name of the company, it doesn't show up. Also, is it possible to have both shown. On my old phone when searched for either the person name or business name, the result showed both. For example, if I searched for lauren or Unico, it would show up as Lauren with Unico below it. Also, this way if I have more than one lauren, I can distinguish between them without having to click through each one.

Secondly, is it possible to set up "speed dial" function. Basically, if I pull up the dialer and press 2 for like 2 seconds it will. Third, I used to have my phone setup that I would have what ever my next appointment was, it would show on the home screen. Is that possible with this phone. Is it possible to allocate certain space on the home screen to preview upcoming appointments.

HTC Desire :: Set The Default Email App

Jul 4, 2010

Just got a new HTC Desire. Loving it and having a tinker but I have a question I can't seem to find the answer to. I have set up the gmail app(when I first got the phone) and I have a couple of issues with it. Namely not sending mails with attachments until you actually go to the sent folder and refresh. But anyway, I digress...I want to use K9 as my default, but even when I have NO email apps running and the Desire does a data sync and sees I have a new email, it chooses to tell me this through the gmail app. How can I set the Desire to tell me this through K9 ? I see under settings>applications>manage applications, that each of the mail programes has a section called "Launch by default" and a button to clear defaults, but this section is greyed out for me on all 3 of my mail apps (gmail, mail and K9)

Android :: Creating A Default Viewer - Receiver For Email Attachments

Sep 6, 2010

I'm trying to create a default handler for .p7s/.p7b files in Android.

I figured the best start would be to create a BroadcastReceiver that will capture the intent from the Android email application (or K-9 if that's a need) for opening of certain attachments (filtered by mime type). Specifically I'm trying to handle s/mime email so looking for the "application/x-pkcs7-certificates" and "application/x-pkcs7-certificates" mime types.

Just as a basic test I've been trying something like this:

CODE:..........

I've tried using the following mimeType filters as well (testing signatures first):

CODE:................

I can't seem to get the IntentReceiver class to capture the intent no matter what filtering I use though. Am I going about this the wrong way?
