Android :: Usb Device Absent From Adb After Ubuntu Karmic Upgrade
Oct 30, 2009
Just finished upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, and my ADP1 doesn't show up in "./adb devices" anymore. I have tried the solution proposed here (http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/msg/ 7f3990c5d5367dbb) but it doesn't work for me. Phone is also missing from the "lsusb" list, although I find that I can actually mount the sdcard.

I have the black Rogers HTC Magic I purchased off of eBay with a broken case, I bought the Fender edition replacement case for the HTC MyTouch and with some adjusting it fit nicely. Only problem now is I'm addicted to this game Pocket Legends for my iPhone so I never use my HTC. The HTC Magic has Firmware 1.5 on it and 2.1 just came out, I was going to download it from the HTC website and upgrade to use my HTC now as Pocket Legends just got released for Android but only works on Firmware 2.1. Little problem being that the download from the HTC site is a .exe file. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and I don't own a computer in the house that runs windows. What do I do? I just want to have my HTC Magic upgraded from 1.5 to 2.1 and then "root" it as I've heard people say.. To my understanding "rooting" is the same thing as one would do with an iPhone for "Jailbreaking"?

I have a problem when trying to see use the Android for development on Ubuntu. The device is shown as offline. Although it detects the device.
when I type % adb devices List of devices attached HT845GZ50600 offline
I am using: Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty)
Few things I tried:
1. I have changed the 50-android.rules file and reloaded the udev. [ as suggested by docs] 2. 51-android.rules ( if there was another 50 then this would have worked) and it worked for some users [ diff thread in the forum] .
2. I also killed adb server and restarted it.
3. It works on Windows, but I want to develop on Ubuntu ( and curious why it doesnt work).

I just updated my Ubuntu Linux box to Jaunty (9.04). Initially, I had same problem everyone else has on Jaunty i.e. adb doesn't see the device: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa. I followed the instructions and 'adb devices' lists my device just fine now, but Eclipse/ADT won't load my app or run it on the device. Every attempt at execution runs on the Emulator. I get the following message in the console: [2009-08-31 21:01:39 - KeyDirector] Automatic Target Mode: Preferred AVD 'avd15' is not available. Launching new emulator. Anyone have ideas on what might have caused this? I tried deleting and re-building the 'avd15' but it didn't help.

I have been using a HTC Hero with all the tweaks etc on it. Now I bought a samsung Galaxy S from Dubai a few days ago. I was very disappointed to find that the android market is missing and the slide market is no match for it. Is there a solution for it? i presume rooting and the flashing a new rom might do the trick but is there a site with proper rooting instructions where they dont say do this step (d) without explaining steps(a,b &c). Without the market I would throw away the galaxy.

Ever since I did the OTA upgrade I notice less free space on my device - about 10mb, on average. Even after I dump the cache kept for all my apps, I cant get it down to what it was before the upgrade.

Has anyone been able to get the sdk version 1.5 to work with Ubuntu 9.04 (64 bit)? I have tried the upgrade from and it fails with: Eclipse throws a "An SWT Error has occurred" message then I get a second dialog saying: pingUsageServer failed Android SDK Ping pingUsageServer failed. Anyone else getting this? I tried to do a reinstall of the sdk and eclipse and I have the same issue. Everything worked great with SDK 1.1 R1. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It appears as though the emulated GSM portion of the android emulator is not working on my system. After scouring the web I have yet to find anyone with information about what might be causing the problem. When I fire up my avd (any avd), it says "No Service" If I go to Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Network Operators, I get an error message: "Error while searching for networks" I am running Ubuntu 9.04 x64 desktop edition. I have SDK 1.6r1 downloaded. I'm hoping this is a simple thing to fix.

Is Ubunto 9.04 compatible with development in Android? Before i ugrade, deploy on device was normal. Now, using 9.04, doesn't recognize it using "adb devices". This below is already set on my ubuntu: 1. Login as root and create this file: /etc/udev/rules.d/50- android. rules.
For Gusty/Hardy, edit the file to read: SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666"
For Dapper, edit the file to read: SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666" 2. Now execute: chmod a+rx /etc/udev/rules.d/50-android.rules

I have installed Karmic Koala (Ubuntu 9.10) and have installed Eclipse 3.5 (Galileo) on the same. When I tried to install ADT, I am getting the following error message:
"Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found. This is my first post and it should be an interesting one. Today I was trying to install Ubuntu on my rooted Galaxy S Vibrant. But, When I was moving the Contents of the download to my SD card, I realized that I didn't have enough space. I had a 2 gig SD card and the contents were just over 2 gigs (Plus the SD card really only had about 1.9 gigs) so obviously THAT wouldn't work. So I asked around and someone said that they had dropped the ubuntu contents into the internal memory instead of the SD card on their Moto DROID. Basically I am wondering if it is possible to do the installation process through my 16gb internal memory instead of the sd card. So for example in the guide telling you how to install ubuntu on android where it says to access the files for installation, they wouldn't be in the SD card, they would be in the internal memory.

I shut down my PC (running Ubuntu 8.10, fully updated) overnight and when I booted the following day, 'adb devices' failed to recognize my stock, OTA-updated, RC30 G1. I followed the instructions listed here:
http://code.google.com/android/intro/develop-and-debug.html#developin...
evan@evan-desktop:~$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/50-android.rules SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666" evan@evan-desktop:~$ adb kill-server && adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached emulator-5554 offline
To answer some preliminary questions:
- Yes, I have my phone on.
- It's on a USB 2.0 port.
- Yes, it sees the emulator(s), but not my device.
- Yes, "USB debugging" is enabled on the phone (and I tried toggling it).
- I've rebooted both the phone and the PC.
- I'm using the latest the 1.0_r2 SDK from the site.
- I'm on 64-bit Ubuntu, but it also fails to work in my 32-bit VM (that also previously worked)

During my very short time experience with Android, I found that Linux is most suitable environment for development compared to Windows. Please correct me if I'm too inexperienced. My question is, Which version of the Linux is best suitable. [Redhat/Fedora/Ubuntu..] Please let me know. Is Linux version really matters.

My phone: Motorola.
My ubuntu: 10.04.
IDE: Eclipse.
I even tried to add the following line:
SUBSYSTEMS==husbh, ATTRS{idVendor}==h22b8, ATTRS{idProduct} ==h41dbh, MODE=h0600"
to my /etc/udev/rules.d/90-android.rules.
But every time I tried to run the application, the device can't be detectable.

I've been trying for days to build the android source in Ubuntu. I followed all the steps outlined in "http://source.android.com/ download", but the actual make of the source fails. I captured the terminal output and saved it to Google Docs in the hopes that someone a lot smarter than me can figure out what I'm doing wrong :)

I got a huge problem with the Android Development Tools ADT running in Eclipse Galileo (3.5.1) on Ubuntu 9.10, 64bit.On this platform, I do not manage to see any property edit dialogs for layout properties. E.g. the one where you can select a string resource ID for text fields, or a drawable ID for image fields or backgrounds.Whenever I click on the button next to the property value - nothing happens, except this button disappears.Properties with a list of possible values, e.g. "wrap_content" or "fill_parent" are displayed in a dropdown box directly in the properties field.On a different system I work in a Windows environment with Eclipse 3.4 and the same ADT: no problems whatsoever, everything works fine, the dialogs come perfectly.Does anyone know what to do here? Where's the problem? Why does Eclipse not tell me that something goes wrong?

I just switched from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04 and noticed that Eclipse Content Assist isn't working anymore. I tried the following variations on Ubuntu 9.04: Eclipse 3.4.2 or 3.5 (cleaned / reinstalled) with ADT 0.93 and Android SDK 1.5r3 Using Sun Java 1.6. No combination works. I've reinstalled everything a bunch of times. I have another machine with Ubuntu 8.10 and Eclipse 3.4.2 with ADT 0.91 or 0.93 and Code Assist works for all those. I just refuse to develop without code-assist and I know lot of people would agree with me on that.

Over the years I've been able to get my fiancee to (for the most part) comfortably use Ubuntu on my computers. Recently I got her to jump ship to the DI and so far she is loving it. My request now is, what is the EASIEST program to sync music with? (Obviously, it needs to be Linux compatible) I've never been a music/mp3 listener so I'm not real fluent on the best methods for storing/playing music. Do you keep all your music in one folder on your phone or SD card? Do you organize it via folders? Do you use the stock music player app? If you all don't mind, give me ideas on the best music management and I'll get her setup and running smoothly so she'll never look back to iPods/Windows again!!
