Android :: Redhat Vs Fedora Vs Ubuntu?

Nov 5, 2009

During my very short time experience with Android, I found that Linux is most suitable environment for development compared to Windows. Please correct me if I'm too inexperienced. My question is, Which version of the Linux is best suitable. [Redhat/Fedora/Ubuntu..] Please let me know. Is Linux version really matters.

Android :: Fedora Eclipse Doesn't Let Me Install ADT Plugin

Oct 2, 2009

I have a problem installing the ADT plugin in Fedora's version of Eclipse. I'm not sure it is a problem with the plugin, it's probably more Fedora's team fault (they heavily personalized and modified eclipse in Fedora's repository).

I installed the version of Eclipse that is included in Fedora's official repos, which is based on version 3.4.2 build 20090211-1700. I've followed the step-by-step instruction provided in Android's website. The problem arises when I go into the Help -> Software updates window. When I select the two plugins to install, it lets me install the DDMS, but not the Developer Tools. If i try (select Developer Tools then click Install) it gives me the following error message (after calculating space and dependencies):

CODE:................

At first, I thought I had not installed some packages (org.eclipse.equinox.p2.iu and/or org.eclipse.wst.sse.core), so I opened YumEX and searched for those pacckages... but they are not available in Fedora's repositories.

Android :: Running Android SDK 1.1 R1 On Linux 64 Bit Fedora 11 RawHide

Apr 7, 2009

How to get Android SDK 1.1 R1 (android-sdk-linux_x86-1.1_r1) working on 64 Bit Linux, Fedora 11 Beta RawHide. (this could surely be applied to other distros as well I suppose but I have just tested the above)

Download the "eclipse-java-ganymede-SR1-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz" eclipse.org. The version from Fedora repository doesn't work due to incompatible packages / versions. Make sure you have the Open JDK available and that Eclipse is using that one instead of the gjc.

Then install 32 bit library dependencies for Android SDK on Fedora 11 Beta.

$yum install glibc.i686 $yum install ncurses-libs.i586 $yum install libstdc $yum install libstdc++.i586 $yum install libzip.i586 $yum install libX11.i586 $yum install libXrandr.i586

I had a lot of problems with the emulator which using SDL and got the following error:

"SDL init failure, reason is: No available video device"

Found a good tip to see what libs is not found:

$cd $andoird_sdk/tools/ $strace ./emulator

It seems that the SDL couln't initialize the screen if not the libX11 and libXrandr wasn't aviable.

Next step was to get the ddms working:

The last line of $ANDROID_SDK1.1R1/tools/ddms has a - Djava.library.path entry pointing to 32 bit eclipse libraries which couldn't be used. So I renamed the library property so it wouldn't be read and instead use the 64 bit eclipse versions.

exec "$java_cmd" -d64 -Xmx256M $os_opts $java_debug - Djava.ext.dirs="$frameworkdir" -Djava.dummy.library.path="$libdir" - Dcom.android.ddms.bindir="$progdir" -jar "$jarpath" "$@"

Then getting the usb to work, follow the instructions on: http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/browse_thread/threa... http://zachoglesby.com/2009/03/android-and-fedora/

The following did work at some point but isn't the prefered way to connect the android according to my googling: [url]

I have to start adb as root.

Android :: No Emulated GSM Ubuntu 9.04 X64

It appears as though the emulated GSM portion of the android emulator is not working on my system. After scouring the web I have yet to find anyone with information about what might be causing the problem. When I fire up my avd (any avd), it says "No Service" If I go to Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Network Operators, I get an error message: "Error while searching for networks" I am running Ubuntu 9.04 x64 desktop edition. I have SDK 1.6r1 downloaded. I'm hoping this is a simple thing to fix.

For Gusty/Hardy, edit the file to read: SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666"

Android :: Ubuntu On Galaxy S

Jul 30, 2010

This is my first post and it should be an interesting one. Today I was trying to install Ubuntu on my rooted Galaxy S Vibrant. But, When I was moving the Contents of the download to my SD card, I realized that I didn't have enough space. I had a 2 gig SD card and the contents were just over 2 gigs (Plus the SD card really only had about 1.9 gigs) so obviously THAT wouldn't work. So I asked around and someone said that they had dropped the ubuntu contents into the internal memory instead of the SD card on their Moto DROID. Basically I am wondering if it is possible to do the installation process through my 16gb internal memory instead of the sd card. So for example in the guide telling you how to install ubuntu on android where it says to access the files for installation, they wouldn't be in the SD card, they would be in the internal memory.

Jan 25, 2009

I shut down my PC (running Ubuntu 8.10, fully updated) overnight and when I booted the following day, 'adb devices' failed to recognize my stock, OTA-updated, RC30 G1. I followed the instructions listed here:
http://code.google.com/android/intro/develop-and-debug.html#developin...
evan@evan-desktop:~$ cat /etc/udev/rules.d/50-android.rules SUBSYSTEM=="usb", SYSFS{idVendor}=="0bb4", MODE="0666" evan@evan-desktop:~$ adb kill-server && adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached emulator-5554 offline

To answer some preliminary questions:
- Yes, I have my phone on.
- It's on a USB 2.0 port.
- Yes, it sees the emulator(s), but not my device.
- Yes, "USB debugging" is enabled on the phone (and I tried toggling it).
- I've rebooted both the phone and the PC.
- I'm using the latest the 1.0_r2 SDK from the site.
- I'm on 64-bit Ubuntu, but it also fails to work in my 32-bit VM (that also previously worked)

Android : Plugin In Eclipse 3.5 On Ubuntu 64bit

Feb 15, 2010

I got a huge problem with the Android Development Tools ADT running in Eclipse Galileo (3.5.1) on Ubuntu 9.10, 64bit.On this platform, I do not manage to see any property edit dialogs for layout properties. E.g. the one where you can select a string resource ID for text fields, or a drawable ID for image fields or backgrounds.Whenever I click on the button next to the property value - nothing happens, except this button disappears.Properties with a list of possible values, e.g. "wrap_content" or "fill_parent" are displayed in a dropdown box directly in the properties field.On a different system I work in a Windows environment with Eclipse 3.4 and the same ADT: no problems whatsoever, everything works fine, the dialogs come perfectly.Does anyone know what to do here? Where's the problem? Why does Eclipse not tell me that something goes wrong?

My request now is, what is the EASIEST program to sync music with? (Obviously, it needs to be Linux compatible) I've never been a music/mp3 listener so I'm not real fluent on the best methods for storing/playing music. Do you keep all your music in one folder on your phone or SD card? Do you organize it via folders? Do you use the stock music player app? If you all don't mind, give me ideas on the best music management and I'll get her setup and running smoothly so she'll never look back to iPods/Windows again!!
