Android :: Two Way Contact Sync ?

Jun 17, 2010

I'm developing an application that needs a two way sync of its own custom contacts. I saw the sample code on Android developer website (talking about AccountManager here and the sample sync adapter code), but that only syncs from the cloud to the device.

Is there a way to do the two way sync? Can someone point me in the right direction with this?

Android :: two way contact sync ?

General :: Contact Sync Is Off But It Wants To Sync?

Feb 27, 2014

New to android and I have the following issue.

1. I added a google account. Without asking it synced everything.
2. I turned off all sync except gmail.
3. But when I add a new contact it still warns me that it will sync it with my google account!
4. I tapped ok. Now by default the google account is on the top of the screen where I add contacts - obviously it syncs it.

Also, when I now go to settings > account > google account I can't seem to turn on/off settings. Eg if I touch an item that is turned on it starts to sync it instead of switching it on.

Obviously I could remove the google account altogether but I would prefer to keep it just for gmail sync. How to do this?

Android :: Calendar/Contact Sync W/o Having 411 Hosted On The Web

Oct 1, 2010

I just got myself a HTC Droid Eris (yes I know it is an older model, but it was all I could afford right now). I am desperately searching for a way to sync my Outlook calendar and contacts (notes and tasks would be nice, but lets not push it) from my desktop to my Eris.

I am very uncomfortable using the google platform to host all of my personal information because it resides on the web; unless I am mistaken about this fact.

I would love a Palm Desktop-esque app or program. At least it was a self contained feature that remained on my personal desktop and was not floating around in cyberspace. Any ideas?

Currently I am using my iPod touch for all of my calendars and contacts because it syncs flawlessly with my Outlook; but I didn't pay for smart phone technology to dial phone numbers alone.

Android :: Outlook Contact Sync - Non Exchange

Jun 9, 2009

I'm a developer writing an application to sync Outlook 2007 contacts with GMail. These are regular local-PST contacts, not Exchange, and yes, for now I'm exclusively focused on Outlook 2007 since that's what I have available. I may look at older versions (which I own) if this one works out. Anyway, I've tried most (all?) of the sync apps and didn't enjoy the experience. I've done the export/import thing and consider that a temporary fix. So I decided to do something about it myself.

The application I have today runs in the background and periodically pulls contact data from both systems. It can identify matches using a variety of prioritized criteria, and it has a way to systematically decide what data needs to be updated in each contact list. It can write changes to both sides. So it's largely done -- except for some decisions about that sync methodology.

The tricky thing about sync is that the GMail and Outlook contact data fields are totally different.

For example, GMail allows unlimited e-mail contacts which are tagged as Home, Work, and Other. By contrast, Outlook only supports three e-mail addresses, and they're not tagged at all. What should a sync app do if the GMail account has four addresses, but only three Outlook slots to store them?

A different example: GMail also supports unlimited phone numbers, also tagged with about six categories. On the other hand, Outlook can handle sixteen phone numbers, each with a fixed category. Some are a bit odd, like Radio Telephone. What should the sync app do if the GMail account has three Work numbers? Outlook only has Business 1 and Business 2...

Granted, these are what programmers call "edge cases" -- they won't apply to most users. But I'm hoping to find some people with large, complex Outlook address books who will weigh in with opinions about how they'd like problem cases handled.

Here is a comparison of the contact data in each system (exlcuding largely similar fields, and excluding the vast array of Outlook fields that simply have no GMail equivalent)--

E-mail Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: 3, not tagged at all

Phone Numbers:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Mobile, Work Fax, Home Fax, Pager, Other
Outlook: 16, one each of Primary, Mobile, Car, Home, Home 2, Business, Business 2, Assistant, Callback, Company, Business Fax, Home Fax, Pager, Other, Radio Telephone, TTY/TDD

Postal Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: 4, one each of Home, Mailing, Business, Other

IM Addresses:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as GoogleTalk, AIM, Yahoo, Skype, QQ, MSN, ICQ, Jabber
Outlook: 1, untagged (probably should equate to MSN, but...?)

Generic "Other" Field:
GMail: Unlimited, tagged as Home, Work, Other
Outlook: No direct equivalent

Web Address:
GMail: No direct equivalent
Outlook: 1, not tagged

The contact name is a special case. GMail does a poor job importing Outlook contacts since it leaves the name blank on business-only contacts. I guess Google devs only talk to their friends. The app I've written will fix your imported list in GMail by substituting the company name if the name is missing. Lots of little stuff like that is easy to do. It's the "unlimited" lists in GMail and the many places where there isn't a direct correlation that are creating questions in my mind.

When something doesn't quite match up should the app simply not do anything? Or would you prefer a partially successful sync? What about some sort of manual conflict resolution? What other options would you like to see in a sync app? (Limited to sync activity and contacts -- I don't plan to mess with ToDo lists, calendars or anything outside of contacts.)

General :: Contact Sync Across Android Phones

Dec 26, 2013

I have just bought a Moto G (although this question is a generic Android one.) I am considering buying a second for my wife. We have not had smartphones before, but both of us use Chrome and I have a Chromebook.

What is the best policy for keeping identical Contacts on the phones?I am guessing both Moto G's could be registered to my Google account. My wife would have access to all the paid for Apps I have and all contacts would be there immediately for her. The phones would only differ in the mobile phone number attached to them. We use SIP phones in the house and I have CSipSimple on my Moto G - my wife's phone would add to the VOIP options.

What are the merits of registering my wife's phone to her own Google account and using CardDav to sync contacts? The two accounts are delegated to each other anyway and all mailboxes are visible to both of us.

Still, I would prefer the extra layer of security enjoyed when not web synced. Is there yet a method to enable synchronization with Evolution, Kmail, or mysql?

Android :: Sync Blackberry To Google Contact W/o Outlook

Aug 26, 2010

I am just putting it out there because I have never used any type of sync to get contacts from one phone to another.I simply let my my providers use their CellBrite machine to move from my old device to the new one. I don't use outlook although I might start. Point is I was truly starting at ground zero and the following post was to the point and detailed enough not to assume you had done this.It will be common knowledge for a lot, but for the rest of us very helpful. Have a great day fellow Droidians.Sync from Blackberry to CSV to GMail / G1 without Outlook. Here's a procedure to export contacts from a Blackberry and import into the G1 / Android using a CSV file and GMail Import, without using Outlook or Google Sync (I don't use Outlook, and had read about limitations/problems with Google Sync for Blackberry). This initially works best when you have a GMail account with maybe some but not all of the same contacts as are in your Blackberry, and with your G1 phone contacts relatively empty (or cleared) to avoid duplicating contacts.

Basically, you create a CSV file using Blackberry Manager (free download from T-mobile, etc.,), edit it using Excel or other spreadsheet program to change the heading names, import the resulting CSV file into the Gmail, then sync it directly into the G1. There are a few tricks, but the result is your contacts will be displayed exactly as you want them. The Export to CSV from Blackberry Manager (BBM) and the import of CSVs into GMail were not intuitive (at least not to me ;-), nor well documented anywhere I found. Here is how I did it using a T-Mobile Blackberry Pearl 8120, BBM vers 4.6 for Win XP, GMail as of 17-Nov-09, and T-Mobile G1 (Android 1.6)

Jelly Bean :: Does Android Allow Contact Sync Disable

Nov 16, 2013

I purchased my first smartphone last week, a Windows Lumia. I am returning the phone tomorrow because Microsoft forces the user to sync contacts, calendar, and documents if the user wants to download apps. I find this a huge privacy invasion. What a shame Microsoft doesn't give me q choice to disable this syncing.

so, before I waste even more money...does Android allow me to download apps AND disable syncing of phone contacts, cal, pictures, etc?I will return this phone anway and NEVER own a smartphone.

Android :: Google Sync Taking Contact Pictures From Facebook?

Jul 30, 2010

just a minor inconvenience: I used to have my phone set to sync with google, which alerted me every time I received an email. I then found out that google sync was causing an issue with my contact pictures, taking them from facebook and resizing them. it caused them to looked pixelated or "zoomed in" in hilli billy terms. So now I have it set to never sync with google. So now I never receive a notification when I receive an email. Anyone know a way I can set it to sync only to gmail and not sync the contacts? I don't really need to sync them anyway, as I have backup assistant for that purpose.

General :: Facebook App No Longer Supports Contact Sync - Android 4.04 (CM9)

Apr 2, 2012

Unhappy with Samsung's stock ICS version, I moved on to a CyanogenMod9 nightly build for my SGS2 - an admittedly risky thing to do on April 1st - which proves fantastically stable and fast.

However, when I installed the Facebook app, I found that the option to sync and merge contacts is gone. From the app, but also from the Accounts and Sync option in Android's settings. It still says "Facebook" under the accounts that I can add, but nothing happens when tapped.

I wiped and re-installed everything, but to no avail. The setting is no longer there and I cannot sync my Facebook contact details with my existing contact list.

HTC EVO 4G :: Facebook Auto Sync To Contact

Jul 19, 2010

Using the FaceBook (FB) app on the EVO 4G is a great feature. Allows you to get numbers of your friends on FB without being in your contact list. Has their FB picture show up when they call etc.

Problem:

Cannot save numbers in my contacts if sync'd with FB.

Example: Friend gives me her number (that I currently do NOT have in my contacts)
I dial her number, it comes up with her name and her FB picture (because she has her mobile number linked to her FB account).
Now I cannot save this number to my contacts from call history because it shows up as if it is already there. I can dial her number again then hit add contact and that works just curious if there is a way to do it from text's or call history so I don't have to keep re-typing the number just to save it.
