Android :: Stop Background Apps From Causing GC And Eating Up CPU
Nov 17, 2010
In looking at some performance issues for a game I'm developing I came across some interesting facts. Although I've minimised GC caused by my app, other apps can still cause one. Also, during framerate drops in my game, I've noticed things like the weather service, email checked, etc. going nuts in the background. (This is on Android 1.6).
I don't really want to block incoming calls, i.e. go into flight mode, before the game starts. I think it's important for the game to be interrupted if there's an incoming call. However, while playing, I don't think people care about weather updates, email updates, texts, etc.
Is there an interface that will let me control what is "active" in the background and what should be "suspended"?

if there is any ways to stop running some apps in background (like poweramp) and force it to just run as I manually open it and after closing stop running in background.

Has anyone else experienced an issue I've complained numerous times about yet can't get resolution: When users upgrade our My Coupons app, apparently there is a service left unclosed. Fine. The issue being, the old service code interferes with the new code and users uninstall then reinstall immediately in attempt to resolve. Google registers the uninstalls, but not the reinstalls.
I repeat, the market registers the uninstalls, but prompt reinstallations DO NOT get registered!
I can verify this occurs as each time the app is first run it notifies our servers, and we've got record of each install. This record vastly differs from the statistics google is reporting. These records are verifiably unique users.

I searched and couldnt find anything.
PROBLEM: Even in areas that I know I have great Sprint coverage, my phone is not connecting to the network and I have no phone signal - "No Service". (WiFi works fine.)
This is the second time this has happened. The last time was last week - I had just installed about 5 new apps (games), rebooted the phone, and I had "No Service". I uninstalled the new apps, rebooted, and service was regained.
Tonight, I didnt install anything NEW, but a handful of apps had updates (Where, Twidroid, Voice Recorder, TWiT.tv, Depth of Field Calculator.)
Actually, now that I think of it, that was my first reboot since I installed ShopSavvy.
I'll uninstall ShopSavvy and Voice Recorder - I dont use the recorder at all - and see where that gets me. But does anyone else have this problem, or am I the only lucky one?

So it's widely known that soft resets of this phone causes problems with the icons as well as displayed program names.Has anyone noticed that soft resets also revert some of your programs back to earlier versions? The 2 I've noticed most often are Pandora and Mybackuppro. For example, the current version of Pandora is 1.1.1. When I upgraded from 1.1.0 in the marketplace, I installed over the old version and everything was working fine. After a soft reset, I noticed that the opening splash screen for Pandora listed 1.1.0, but the listing under my downloads in the app store didn't list an upgrade needed. I had to uninstall 1.1.0 and reinstall 1.1.1. I had that version on for about a week until I had another soft reset. Sure enough, I'm back to Pandora 1.1.0. The same thing happened with mybackuppro. This is far more irritating than screwing up the icons or displayed name, because this is actually changing what version of the software we're using.early adopters being the beta testers for mobile manufacturers and carriers.

Running the #TrinityKernel with a stock version of #jellybean (rooted, 4.1.2)?
Every few days (longest was 4 days between reboots), all my background notifications stop. This doesn't happen when using this kernel with either CM10 or Paranoid Android. A reboot fixes it temporarily.
My custom recovery is TWRP and I originally unlocked my bootloader and rooted my GNex manually using Arch Linux.

So the phone was working fine for a few days. All calls were clear, however today when I got home and made a call the call was not clear and had a background noise that sounds like a shower or white nose. All subsequent calls I make have this background noise and I tried rebooting the phone, putting my sim card in another phone (call was clear on other phone), and tried factory resetting the nexus. The noise still persists.
I was wondering if anyone else experienced this problem and what you would suggest I do.

I use rooted 4.3 Samsung S4. Some apps like MX player can play video when the screen is off. I want to play games of other video apps when the screen is off. For example:
1. I use Android to watch some CNN and bloomberg TV (not radio) that I want to play in the background with the screen off
2. I am playing some games which require the apps to be opened and the screen on to get some special stuff.

I'm trying to setup a KeyListener on an EditText widget. My code is as follows: Where mMsgToSend is my EditText widget. The problem is that whenever I implement this code, everything stops showing up in my EditText widget. Anything I type does not show up in the widget. When I set a break point in my code everything is executing as I would expect it to. If I do not have the code in place, everything shows up in the widget as I type. My understanding is that if you want everything to be handled normally then you return a "false" from the event handlers otherwise you return a "true".

As above, are there any apps that can do this?A big bug bear of mine is that if im loading a particularly slow web page and want / need to be doing something else, if I open another app, effectively sending the browser to thr back ground, loading of the page stalls until the browser is called up again. It's not a big deal, but being so used to my blackberry loading pages in the background, I kind of miss it.

I have an EVO and I have a problem with it. I downloaded the app Advanced Task Killer to take care of apps running in the background. However sometimes when I pull it up I find that things like Sprint Navigation, Qik, Voice Dialer, and sometimes others are running without me pulling them up. My question is, how do I keep these apps from doing this, because they kill my battery when they come on and I don't know it?

I am new to Android, previous Crack Berry addict here. On the BB I could load Google Maps (including Latitude) to keep my position updated on Google Latitude online (I use it when I go riding on my motorcycle to give my wife a way to check if I'm still moving (= not dead)). Even if I shut down Maps, I could elect to have Latitude run in the background, so it would still update my position. How do I do this in Android? When I 'exit' Maps, it shuts it down, including Latitude, as far as I can tell. Can Android run Latitude in the background, or do I need to keep Maps open all the time?

How do you keep apps from starting? I noticed things such as the alarm clock, moxier, and a few other programs will just load themselves. Yes, I have the task killer. I find it annoying plus it kills the battery and slows the phone down having programs loading up without you selecting them. Can we keep them from loading in the first place?

I've spent the last few weeks developing a new tool to stop piracy of my paid apps on the Android Market. In a nutshell, licensing is tied directly to purchase verification. There is no license server to manage, no key for the user to enter. User experience is basically uninterrupted from normal application purchase.
I'm excited about this, as my paid apps are now reaching piracy rates as high as 90% on some days, with the average somewhere around 75%. For pirated apps, purchase verification (and subsequently licensing) will fail after a certain number of attempts, and pirates will be left with anything from a "buy me" nag, to a disabled app (behavior is configurable).
Android Market is the only supported purchase validation target so far. Others will be forthcoming if demand warrants.
This isn't a perfect solution (I have yet to find a perfect licensing solution), but I feel it is the best balance of security, features, and workflow that I've seen to date.
You can find a write up, download, and purchasing information here: http://keyeslabs.com/joomla/index.php/projects/auto-app-licensing

I've just updated my nexus one to 2.2. Now all of my (own and some from the market) apps throw exceptions and were closed.
It's weird, in the app I'm developing atm, there it displays only my start page with buttons, but when I tap on one button to fire an intent to another activity my app gets closed with an exception.
Yesterday before the update everything worked fine.
The same thing in my emulator:
I have two devices, one with API level 7 and one with level 8. Level 7 worked fine, but level 8 killed my app :
What is the problem and how can I solve this? I'm desperatly trying to get it working again :

What is eating up memory? When I received the refurb it said 131Mb free space. I have installed a few apps (google voice, notepad, swype) it shrank by 1 Mb (only) After the nightly profilactic battery pull for 1 minute I rebooted the phone and now I have 120 Mb. Where did the 10Mb go?

Is there a way to stop apps from scanning the phone for files every time one is opened from within the app?

Anyone using this? Sure it has a price, but this thing isnt using ANY battery life on my phone... I thought these apps running in the background (chat apps) were supposed to destroy battery? I leave this thing on nearly 8 hours a day, and hardly see any battery drain. The UI could use a few tweaks and themes, but for reliability its awesome!

So, I'm just switching from the iPhone and I am getting used to how the Droid pushes out it's notifications. The iPhone obviously didn't have apps running in the background and it completely relied on push notifications. I am trying to figure out what programs I can kill in Advanced Task Killer that won't block from notifications coming in. Is there any way to tell?
