Android :: Location Manager Minimum Update Time Overridden / When Location Changes?

Oct 26, 2010

I'm developing a mapping app using Eclipse 3.5.I'm setting the minimum update period with the LocationManager's requestLocationUpdates method, via a configuration activity. When I set the property I see in Logcat that the system process sets the value OK.When I actually send a new location from the DDMS emulator control and the location changes on the map view, I see that the system process then sets the minimum time to zero.Below is a capture of the system's log messages. You can see that I'm setting the period to 32 seconds, then 16, then, after I've sent a simulated location change the system sets it to zero. The map responds to location changes to location changes instantly even if they are sent only a couple of seconds apart.

Android :: Location Manager Retries

Dec 23, 2009

Has anyone got a good solution when the Location manager returns a null? My brain is baked trying to get around this. I know its just a matter of time but do I need to put in a musical interlude? I'm only asking for Coarse Location. Right now I'm just exiting with a Toast but I would rather have a way to hang around and maybe kick the thing into gear. I'm pretty sure this was one of my force close issues but the Toast is just an escape clause. It doesn't solve the problem.

Android :: Communicate With A Location Manager Started From Another Activity

Aug 20, 2010

In my app I want to obtain a gps lock and record the coords. But I do not want to lock the device into looking for the gps. The user is to be free to traverse through the app and the different activities within.

So If I call a locationListener in activity A, can I reference it in activities B C and D?

if is was still in activity A I could say something like

A.this.mlocListener.removeMyUpdates();

When I am in activity B how can I reference the LocationListener I set up in Activity A

Android :: Way To Accurately Determine Which City In US The User Is In Using Location Manager

Oct 14, 2010

I am trying to determine the city in USA the user is in using their current location from an Android App. I want to use the GPS as the location provider but how accurately can I determine the name of the city from the Locale or Latitude / Longitude data.

For instance I noticed the twitter app determines you are in Manhattan when tweeting from Manhattan, but is it possible to retrieve New York City instead of Manhattan from the location data and likewise Los Angeles instead of Beverly Hills.

This is because all I need to determine is which city the user is in as per the current location.

Android :: Reusing Code And Resources From Another Project

Dec 10, 2009

I have project A with some classes and some resources (used for classes configuration). I'd like to reuse its classes (and resources necessary for them) in another project B (and possibly in more projects). Currently I have 2 projects in Eclipse and they both builds fine, but when project B is started in emulator it fails with error. It should get classes and resources from both projects and package them together. 2) Make a third project which consists of symbolic links to classes and resources of those two projects. 3) Make project A as a service and consume it in project B. They all are imperfect: - 1 and 2 would pack classes and resources of project A into the .apk of project B. - 3 has performance penalty and reuse is not so easy.

Android :: Reusing Intents With Notification / Pending

Nov 19, 2009

In my app, user starts a service and shows a notification from activity A. The notification creates a Pending Intent that will invoke activity A should the user tap on it. The problem with this behavior is that, if the user starts the service (which shows the notification), drags down the notification bar, then taps the notification, I now have two activity A's in the display stack, one on top of the other and both exactly the same. How can I re-use the original activity A in this situation so the user isn't duplicating activities?

Android :: Reusing Java Source In Multiple Projects

Nov 24, 2009

I'm currently developing for Android using Eclipse. I have a lexicon viewer application (with package name "com.mycompany.myviewer") that I want to reuse multiple times, just changing specific resources such as app name and icons. For example, I have a certain publisher "Publisher1", who publishes the lexicons "Lexicon1" and "Lexicon2". I would need to two applications: App1 with certain name and icon, and App2 with another name and icon. What is the best way of doing this in Java? In visual Studio (and C++) I could create two projects based on the lexikon viewer app and use conditional resources to get the right name and icon. Is there some way of doing something similar in Java?

Android :: AppWidgets - Reusing RemoteViews Instance Leaks Memory?

May 21, 2009

I'm writing a widget. Currently, I'm have a simple ImageView, and calling RemoteViews.setImageViewBitmap(). I'm using a service to do the updates.

I thought it might be a good idea to reuse an existing RemoteViews instance, so I'm only querying it the first time around, and subsequently simply call setImageViewBitmap() with the new image.

This works well initially, but after some time I first start getting "!!! FAILED BINDER TRANSACTION !!!" errors, and later, an OutOfMemory exception.

Simply creating a new RemoveViews instance every time works flawlessy on the other hand. I'm just curios why that would be, any ideas?

Android :: Location Provider / Coarse Location

Jun 25, 2009

The way we are retrieving locations from our Android phones is to 1st get a Coarse Location followed by a Fine Location. This is for the case where the user may be inside a building initially and unable to track satellites. After we get our coarse location we transition to a fine location to track satellites. This method has been working fine for several months. We recently upgraded to 1.5 and our mapping application, to my recollection continued to work. For the past couple of days we have not been able to get a coarse location and we are receiving a status message in the onStatusChange callback of.We have re- installed previous versions our code that used 1.1 and we are receiving the same status message of .TEMPORARILY_UNAVAILABLE. Other than the obvious description of the constant, we can find no meaningful information.

Recently all my android devices think they are in Spain when I am at home in Toronto.

I think this was caused when I ran a location spoofing program on only one of my devices, one of the locations I set it to was Spain (among others).

I've tried clearing the data for the Network Location apps, changing the SSID on my router with no luck.

The only way it shows the correct location is when I go outside and run Google maps long enough to get a GPS fix. But when I go back inside I am back in Spain!

HTC Desire :: Home Location Fixed Instead Of Current Location

Nov 14, 2010

How could I fix the location which appears on the clock on the home screen and serves as weather forecast location? I am not living near a big city listed on the weather location list and when at home, the current location usually is indicated some dozen miles away from my home. This could be a cosmetic problem, but in the Alps (where I am living) weather a short distance away can be quite different from where you are.
Besides that, it would be nice to know the weather at home while beeing abroad.

HTC Droid Eris :: Wrong Location / Location Unavailable

Jul 2, 2010

i've had my phone about 3 weeks now. up until last week, the htc weather widget would update to my current location. when i was home, it would show the town i live in. i also had the google internet option to use my location and this would also work perfectly until last sunday.now, the weather location was stuck on miami no matter where i went (as far north as west palm beach) and the internet shows up 'location unavailable'. i have found out that the gps is picking up where i am in goggle maps but it seems that the cell towers are not as far as weather and internet location are concerned. i have tried all of the obvious settings.i did a factory reset and now my weather says ft lauderdale which is closer to me but still not my town. it does not update (manually either) as i move. the internet location still says location unavailable although for a fleeting minute after the factory reset, it DID locate me....then it was gone so i called verizon, they didn't have a clue. then i took it to the store and it turns out EVERY phone the tech tried in the store had the same problem, including his. he told me it was a google problem and there was nothing he could do about it. i felt if i tried explaining how that would make it a verizon problem as well, it would be a losing battle
