Android :: Reusing Java Source In Multiple Projects
Nov 24, 2009
I'm currently developing for Android using Eclipse. I have a lexicon viewer application (with package name "com.mycompany.myviewer") that I want to reuse multiple times, just changing specific resources such as app name and icons.For example, I have a certain publisher "Publisher1", who publishes the lexicons "Lexicon1" and "Lexicon2". I would need to two applications: App1 with certain name and icon, and App2 with another name and icon.What is the best way of doing this in Java? In visual Studio (and C++) I could create two projects based on the lexikon viewer app and use conditional resources to get the right name and icon. Is there some way of doing something similar in Java?

How can I attach Java source to an Android project? I'm able to browse java source for a Java project, but not for an Android project. I modified project properties and add Java source in "Libraries" section, still not working.

Is it possible to include other Java source projects in Eclipse into an Android project? Normally for a regular Java project you do this by adding the other project to the build path and including it in the Project References. This same approach lets the code compile, but when the app is deployed to the emulator, it throws a VerifyError when I try and instantiate classes from my other project. Is this possible with the Android SDK? Do you have to build them to jars and include them inside your Android project like this? I know this works, but just involves more steps to do this.

As far as I understand, all the built-in standard apps like (email, music, calendar etc) are built using the same API. So I should be able to import a project like mail / music etc without checking out the full source repository of android. I'v been trying that but I am getting compilation problems like class resolve failure. Am I doing it wrong? What do I have to do to import a project in eclipse without compilation error. I am interested in the Music application.I have setup the latest android eclipse plugin and run test applications with it, so my setup is OK.

In my app, I'm taking advantage of a web-based API (the Sunlight Labs API) that requires an API Key.The project is also open source, hosted on Github. I want to avoid committing my API key into the codebase.I'd be fine with creating some other .xml file of special string values, and git-ignoring that file (while providing a .xml.example file to copy into its place), but I don't know the best way of doing that with the Android SDK.

I have problems with the following: I want to create to applications. One with a Android service and one with a Activity that will use functions on the Service. Before I splitted this in to applications I got everything working in one application. I can call functions (that are definned in the aidl - file) on the service without problems.
Now the problems coms. I splitted the application into two parts, a Service application and Gui application. The bindins to the service (in the gui application) works and I see that the service is getting created. Then in the onServiceConnected function of the ServiceConnection class I created the following:
mService = IMyService.Stub.asInterface(service);
And this gives me the following exception:
03-16 13:53:05.549: ERROR/AndroidRuntime(881): java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: MyPackage.IMyService$Stub
It looks like he can't find the Stub class in IMyService. But the Stub is part of the java file generated out of the aidl-file. Why I get this exception or how I can resolve this?

I'm working on two projects. One is essentially a library, and the other is an application using that library. Now from the application project, I want to use the library's classes, so I added that project to the "required projects" under java build path. It seems to compile fine, but at runtime, I get this error:
07-27 11:26:57.037: ERROR/dalvikvm(741): Could not find class 'interdroid.contextframework.ContextManager', referenced from method com.bartvanwissen.contextframeworktest.MainActivity.onCreate
Apparently, the library project's classes are not added to the apk file. How can I make sure they are included? Since I'm working on both projects at the same time, I would like to prevent having to create a jar file every time I want to test something.

A lot of open source libraries that aid in Android application development have sprung up with time. IMO looking at source code of good projects helps learn the system better, faster and not to mention reduces development time. Is there a recommended list of such projects or if not, can we build such a list? I think it will really be useful to other developers.

I cannot run android junit tests for classes sitting in main android project that implement interfaces that reside in other included projects. Depending on SDK version I get different errors: from "Test run failed:" on 1.5 and 1.6 and spurious process death to a more polite "NoClassDefFoundError" on SDK 2.0. This happens only on instantiation of classes that reside in the Android project and implement interfaces residing outside that android project. There is no problem instantiating classes that do not fall into this category (i.e. android only or library only classes).
Android project by itself works fine with these classes - it is just the test set-up doesn't and project inclusion/classpath seems to be ok. Test project includes all projects that main project includes. NoClassDefFoundError makes little sense here given that the classloader can see and instantiate classes sitting right next to the ones that do not work. Did anyone else run into this or found a way to set-up android based tests in a multi-project set-up? Below is more detailed set-up and test explanation: 1) Library project: FooLib public interface IFoo { ... }

I just started to play with android dev and java+eclipse is pretty new to me. I managed to create simple project and run it on my device. Now I want to create simple game (more of them actually) and I would love to use shared code base for all of them (game loop, initialization, etc..). Problem is that I have no idea how to correctly do this. I created android project called engine with all basic stuff that I need and made it work on device. Now I tried to create another project in same workspace called mygame. Main class (activity) of mygame is MyGameApp which inherits from EngineApp (main activity of my engine project) which inherits from Activity. I added engine project into required projects in mygame build path tab in properties. Problem is that when I try to run this project it crashes on ClassNotFoundException trying to find my MyGameApp class.

Does anyone know what approach one can take to automatically generate Java source code, from for example an xml or json file, in eclipse? One great example of what I am thinking of doing is what Google Android sdk does: they have an R class generated automatically from the resources. Every time a resource file is saved in Eclipse R class is automatically regenerated.
UPDATE: Example:
In the text (xml or json file) I have the following:
<tags>
<tag id="ALPHA">
<description>The first alpha tag.</description>
<value>231232</value> </tag> <tag id="BETA">
<description>This is the beta tag.</description>
<value>231232</value> </tag>
Then in my generated java class, say R I would have something like:
R.tags.ids.ALPHA //refers to an enum value for example
R.tags.values.ALPHA //refers to final int with avlue 231232
R.tags.descriptions.ALPHA //refers to the String with description

Can you please tell me if we can still compile froyo source on Mac OS X 10.5? Is it true that we need a 64 bit environment and Java 6 in order to compile froyo source?
I don't think 10.5 is 64 bits and has Java6.

1. Can I call ADT Layout Editor in my java source file, not by XML file "open with" menu ?
2. When I click "add" button in the outline view of ADT Layout Editor , it will show such a list of UI components as "AbsoluteLayout AnalogClock AutoCompleteTextView Button ....." My question is where it gets this list? Can I config this path to get my customized UI components?

I followed evilisto's guide to make honeycomb style lockscreen.I could get the framework layout working, but since I didn't know how to get java source code for my device, so I just decompiled framework2.jar and modified MultiWaveView.smali(since framework.jar doesn't have this file, I had to decompile framework2.jar), compiled and odexed it.But the radious of chevron is too big and animation speed didn't change.What should I modify to change animation speed and radious of chevron?
I changed the values to extremely high value, but it seems framework2.jar and odex doesn't work for lockscreen chevron at all..

I want do display some images that I load from a remote source in a gallery. The gallery should let the user do the following things:
-zoom the image (preferably also by pinch-zoom) -pan the image -switch between the different images
Of course most built-in gallery applications can do all of that. So my first idea was to use an ACTION_VIEW intent in order to delegate the task to some gallery application. This however won't work for me since you can only pass the URI of the image you want to display but not the actual bitmap data itself. I can't just pass the URL of the remote image because I need to manage the loading and caching of the data myself. A way around this would be to write the data to a local file and then pass the URI of that file (and deleting the file again afterward). Besides this being less than elegant it won't even do the trick because with an intent like this you can only pass one image at a time.
The built-in Facebook application on the Nexus One actually does exactly what I have in mind for displaying photo albums. It looks like a custom gallery activity they built into their application. Does anyone know whether there are templates available for something like this somewhere that one could reuse? Building something like this from scratch by myself seems too time consuming.

I have encountered a strange issue. I received two emails from the same source with similar (but not quite the same) subject. Both show up fine in my gmail inbox (as expected) on a browser, but if I use the gmail app on the Droid X, it only shows the most recent message. The two messages were received about 3 days apart, the content of the message is different, but the from address is the same and the subject line is similar (just a few #'s different).

I have project A with some classes and some resources (used for classes configuration). I'd like to reuse its classes (and resources necessary for them) in another project B (and possibly in more projects). Currently I have 2 projects in Eclipse and they both builds fine, but when project B is started in emulator it fails with error.It should get classes and resources from both projects and package them together. 2) Make a third project which consists of symbolic links to classes and resources of those two projects. 3) Make project A as a service and consume it in project B. They all are imperfect: - 1 and 2 would pack classes and resources of project A into the .apk of project B. - 3 has performance penalty and reuse is not so easy.

In my app, user starts a service and shows a notification from activity A. The notification creates a Pending Intent that will invoke activity A should the user tap on it. The problem with this behavior is that, if the user starts the service (which shows the notification), drags down the notification bar, then taps the notification, I now have two activity A's in the display stack, one on top of the other and both exactly the same. How can I re-use the original activity A in this situation so the user isn't duplicating activities?

I have multiple ArrayLists built from parsed XML that are directly related to each other in order. The arrays are later put into a single mapped ArrayList (groupData) to be read with a SimpleAdapter which creates the list in the Android GUI.
What I want to do is sort the list in alphabetical order based on one array (arr_title) and the other arrays stay in synchronized order to it. It doesn't matter where the sorting happens as long as the final displayed list is sorted. I expect it would be best to sort the mapped array once it's built. The simpler or easier to understand the code the better, but don't want the sorting to go very slow either. I have about 140 objects per array, but that could expand considering the XML is pulled from the web.
I've spent hours searching Google and tried a number of things with little progress. Collections.sort(arr_title) will sort the one array as I want it, but then the other arrays don't match up and doing the same thing to the other arrays obviously just sorts them individually as I don't want. I've noticed mention of using the TreeMap type and Comparator for similar sorting, but couldn't figure out how to use them in this case probably because the examples didn't provide a big enough picture for me to understand.
The sample below is where most of the stuff happens after the separate arrays are created.
CODE:............
SimpleAdapter adapter = new SimpleAdapter(this, groupData, android.R.layout.simple_list_item_2, new String[] {"title", "desc", "num"}, new int[]{android.R.id.text1, android.R.id.text2});
setListAdapter(adapter);

I'm writing a widget. Currently, I'm have a simple ImageView, and calling RemoteViews.setImageViewBitmap(). I'm using a service to do the updates.
I thought it might be a good idea to reuse an existing RemoteViews instance, so I'm only querying it the first time around, and subsequently simply call setImageViewBitmap() with the new image.
This works well initially, but after some time I first start getting "!!! FAILED BINDER TRANSACTION !!!" errors, and later, an OutOfMemory exception.
Simply creating a new RemoveViews instance every time works flawlessy on the other hand. I'm just curios why that would be, any ideas?

All the examples I've found online for displaying a gallery of images require creating a custom Adapter and doing a ton of manual work. Is there not an Intent that I can simply pass a path or filter to in order to reuse the default image gallery functionality (display thumbnails, touch to view full pic, sharing options, etc) but limit the results to my application's storage directory?
