Android :: Way To Accurately Determine Which City In US The User Is In Using Location Manager
Oct 14, 2010
I am trying to determine the city in USA the user is in using their current location from an Android App. I want to use the GPS as the location provider but how accurately can I determine the name of the city from the Locale or Latitude / Longitude data.
For instance I noticed the twitter app determines you are in Manhattan when tweeting from Manhattan, but is it possible to retrieve New York City instead of Manhattan from the location data and likewise Los Angeles instead of Beverly Hills.
This is because all I need to determine is which city the user is in as per the current location.

I downloaded NBA League Pass Mobile because I am in Dayton, OH and Cavaliers games are rarely shown on Dayton's FSN. However, I've come to find out that this is a blackout area for League Pass. Does anyone know of a way to change the Droid's location so that League Pass thinks I am in a different city? I see there is a way on the iPhone, but I can't find anything for the Droid.

I'm developing a mapping app using Eclipse 3.5.I'm setting the minimum update period with the LocationManager's requestLocationUpdates method, via a configuration activity. When I set the property I see in Logcat that the system process sets the value OK.When I actually send a new location from the DDMS emulator control and the location changes on the map view, I see that the system process then sets the minimum time to zero.Below is a capture of the system's log messages. You can see that I'm setting the period to 32 seconds, then 16, then, after I've sent a simulated location change the system sets it to zero. The map responds to location changes to location changes instantly even if they are sent only a couple of seconds apart.

In my application I have to fetch the current location. First it correctly fetches the location. But we are moving from the current location to some other location. It shows the previous address. It is not updating the location. My code is: locManager = (LocationManager)getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE); locListener = new MyLocationListener();locManager.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager .GPS_PROVIDER ,0,0,locListener); location = locManager.getLastKnownLocation(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER);if(location != null){latitude = location.getLatitude();longitude = location.getLongitude();} Please find the mistake and when i launch first time it is not working on second time itself it is working so check this thing also.

I'm looking for a way to determine user identity so I can globally track game scores off phone.IMEI provides identity of the phone - not effective if phone is on- traded or upgraded by individual. USIM provides identity of phone carrier subscriber - assumes device is phone, and currently has a SIM card.I'd like to be able to provide continuity as a user upgrades to a new device. And I dislike being forced to create an account on each global scoring system, so I don't want to force that on my users. And my end user experience with OpenFeint leaves me disinclined to use it.It doesn't need to be bullet proof. But it does need to be hassle free for my users. Is there any other identifier on an Android device that I can use to link data more cleanly with the current owner? And how would I get hold of that identifier? I'm thinking something like the user's Google account .. or similar

For example, I am inside a building and I want to get my location with the accuracy of 0.75 (Criteria.ACCURACY_FINE) and this will use the gps if my gps is on. Since I am inside a building, gps won't work. How can I determine if it is really impossible to get a gps fix location?
Is onLocationChanged(Location arg0) will be called even though no gps fix location was received when using LocationListener? Is it possible to use a timeout in requesting gps location so that I can shift to network as the location provider if i can't get any location?

Has anyone got a good solution when the Location manager returns a null? My brain is baked trying to get around this. I know its just a matter of time but do I need to put in a musical interlude? I'm only asking for Coarse Location. Right now I'm just exiting with a Toast but I would rather have a way to hang around and maybe kick the thing into gear. I'm pretty sure this was one of my force close issues but the Toast is just an escape clause. It doesn't solve the problem.

I call startGPS() in onCreate-Methode in one Activity (only one, let me call it StartActivity).

And if this activity will be destroyed (so, when application will be closed), I call endGPS()

I want to create an application for Android that enables me to get the geolocation of a user. This has to be made as a client-server app and for the server side I'm using OpenFire. For getting the user's location I would have to use XEP-0080, right? And SmackAPI also? I'm completely new to XMPP and Smack, so if anyone could get me a few pointers or maybe examples or any kind of documentation about this I'd be very grateful.

The LocationManager API in android seems like it's a bit of a pain to use for an application that only needs an occasional and rough approximation of the user's location. The app I'm working on isn't really a location app per se, but it does need to get the user's location in order to display a list of nearby businesses. It doesn't need to worry about if the user is moving around or anything like that.Show the user a list of nearby locations.Preload the user's location so that by the time I need it in Activity X, it will be available. Don't particularly care about accuracy or frequency of update. Just grabbing one location is sufficient as long as it's not way off. Maybe if I want to be fancy I'll update the location once every few mins or so, but it's not a huge priority.
Work for any device as long as it has either a GPS or a Network Location provider.

In my app I want to obtain a gps lock and record the coords. But I do not want to lock the device into looking for the gps. The user is to be free to traverse through the app and the different activities within.
So If I call a locationListener in activity A, can I reference it in activities B C and D?
if is was still in activity A I could say something like
A.this.mlocListener.removeMyUpdates();
When I am in activity B how can I reference the LocationListener I set up in Activity A

Is there a way to look up the user phone number other than TelephonyManager? In my G1, this returns null: // get your phone number TelephonyManager telephonyManager = (TelephonyManager) getSystem Service (Context. I've been working on an application lately that is using GMaps to display a location that is stored in the devices database. However when no location is available (no GPS signal is available) the user can go through an edit wizard and at a certain point he can add a location himself. I already have to code to display the stored location, but is it possible to write something so the user get's to see a map and when he clicks/touches on a certain area a map pointer appears and the location is stored. Is that possible in any way? Is there any good online documentation available? I searched through this group and on Google but couldn't find anything usefull.

I'm new to android development. Is it possible for a view (with a particular layout) to "appear" at the location where the user "touches"? If so, how? Like the idea of right-clicking on your computer - a menu pops down wherever you right-click and when you navigate away, it disappears.

Visiting www.google.com on the Android browser (or even with an android spoofed user-agent), presents the option to "Share Location". When clicked, it uses the GPS/Cell phone towers to figure out the location. I tried the google.loader.clientLocation but that only works using the IP address. Is there a method to tap into the Android OS and access GPS data from a regular web application (and not an Android application) similar to the way Google does? [Perhaps Google uses the Google Gears app on Android to access this data.]
